ELLWOOD CITY HIGH SCHOOL

1946

Ellwood City won the the Section 7 championship-the first by a Lawrence County team in WPIAL history. Ellwood City edged Sharon, 4-3, in nine innings to win the section with a 7-1 record. Ellwood City recorded an overall 7-2 record. In the WPIAL playoff opener, Aliquippa edged Ellwood City, 6-5. Aliquippa was the eventual  WPIAL Champion. 

1952

Ellwood City shared the Section 7 title with Beaver Falls with a 7-1 record.  Beaver Falls downed Elwood City 3-0 in the WPIAL playoffs. 

1956

Ellwood City won the Section 7 crown with a 6-2 record. Ellwood City records an overall log of 13-3. Ellwood City edged Beaver, 5-4, in eight innings in the opening game of WPIAL playoffs. Union defeated Ellwood City, 2-0, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs.

1957

Ellwood City won the Section 6 with a 7-1 record. Ellwood City compiles an 11-3 overall mark. Beaver defeats Ellwood City, 6-0, in the opening round of WPIAL playoffs.

1958

Ellwood City shared the Section 6 title  with Beaver Falls with a 5-3 record. Ellwood City logged a 9-4 record overall. Beaver Falls edged Ellwood City, 2-1, in the WPIAL playoffs.

1962

Ellwood City wins their first WPIAL Championship. 2 record. Ellwood City won the Section 5 title with a 7-1 record.Ellwood City defeats Ambridge twice to secure the crown. Ellwood City compiles a 23-2 record overall.  Ellwood City downed Riverside, 8-1, in the WPIAL playoff opener. Ellwood City defeated Har-Brack, 3-1, in the quarter-finals.  Ellwood City downed Montour, 11-2, in the WPIAL semi-finals to reach their first WPIAL title game.  Ellwood City downed McKeesport, 4-1, to win the WPIAL Championship at Forbes Field. 

1964

 Ellwood City won the Section 6 title and compiled a 17-4 overall record. Ellwood City won the section title with a 8-2 record. Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, 10-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs.

1965

Ellwood City captured the Section 6 title with a 9-1 record. Ellwood City recorded an overall season log of 20-2. Rochester edged Ellwood City, 2 -1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. 

  1966    

Ellwood City won the the Section 6 title with a 9-1 log. Ellwood City   compiled a 19-5 overall record. Ellwood City defeated Riverside, 3-0, in the opening round of the playoffs in eight innings. Ellwood City edged Carnegie, 3-2, in the quarter-finals. Kiski Area downed Ellwood City, 7-5, in the WPIAL semi-finals.

1968

Ellwood City won the WPIAL for the second time in school history. Ellwood City won the Section 5 title with an 11-0 record. Ellwood City finished the year with an overall 27-2 log. Ellwood City edged Center, 4-3, in the  opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City downed Canon-McMillan 3-1 in the quarter-finals. Ellwood City defeated North Hills, 6-2, in the WPIAL semi-finals. Ellwood City edged Waynesburg, 1-0, in the WPIAL Finals.

1969

Ellwood City won the Section 6 title with a 14-0 record. Ellwood City compiled an overall log of 25-4.  Ellwood City downed Center, 9-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Canon McMillan downed Ellwood City, 5-0, in the WPIAL quarter-finals.   

1970

Ellwood City won a share of the Section 5 title with Ambridge with a 9-3 record. Ellwood City downed Ambridge, 8-2, to advance to the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City ended the year with a 24-7 overall record. In the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs, Ellwood City edged Mohawk, 1-0. Ellwood City defeated Valley, 6-2, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAl playoffs. Bethel Park defeated Ellwood City, 3-0, in the WPIAL semi-finals. 

1971

Ellwood City won the Section 5 championship with a 9-3 record. Ellwood City compiled an overall record of 30-7. Ellwood City defeated New Brighton, 7-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City downed Frazier, 6-2, in the quarter-fianls of the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City snapped West Mifflin North 24-game unbeaten record with a 3-0 win in the WPIAL semi-finals. Highlands edged Ellwood City, 5-4, in the first WPIAL Championship held at Three Rivers Stadium.

1978

Ellwood City won the Section 5 title with a 10-4 record. Ellwood City recorded a 16-13 overall mark. Union defeated Ellwood City, 5-3, in the WPIAL playoffs opening round.

1994

Ellwood City won a share of the the Section 6 title with a 7-5 record along with Blackhawk, Hopewell and Beaver. Ellwood City recorded an overall log of 11-9. Blackhawk downed Ellwood City, 7-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs.

1995

Ellwood City won the Section 6 championship with a 10-2 record. Ellwood City registered a 16-6 record overall and finished as the #5 team in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette final rankings. Ellwood City downed Plum, 4-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Seneca Valley defeated Ellwood City, 13-1, in the WPIAL quarter-final round. Seneca Valley edged Ellwood City, 4-3, earlier in the season and went on to win the PIAA title and ranked in the USA Today's top 25 final poll.

1996

Ellwood City won the Section 6 crown with a 10-2 record. Ellwood City compiled an overall record of 13-6. Ellwood City, despite having only the 58th highest overall enrollment, was ranked #1 in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette rankings. Shaler defeated Ellwood City, 9-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs.

1997

Ellwood City won the Section 6 title with an 11-4 record. Ellwood City logged a 14-6 overall record. Montour defeated Ellwood City, 13-10, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. 

1998

Ellwood City won the a share of the Section 6 title tying Beaver with a 10-5 record. Ellwood City ended the season with an overll record of 14-6. Franklin Regional downe Ellwood City, 13-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs.

2000

Ellwood City won the Section 6 crown with a 10-2 record. Ellwood City compiled an overall record of 19-6. Ellwood City defeated Thomas Jefferson, 10-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City edged Belle Vernon, 3-2, on the WPIAL quarter-finals. Waynsburg downed Ellwood City, 3-0, in the WPIAL semi-final round.

2001

Ellwood City wins its third WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City won the Section 6 title with an 11-1 record. Ellwood City ended the year with an overall 19-5 mark. Ellwood City defeated Beaver, 7-1, in the WPIAL quarter-finals round. Ellwood City downed South Park, 7-0, in the WPIAL semi-finals. Ellwood City downed Shady Side Academy, 6-3, to win the WPIAL Championship. Phillipsburg-Osceola defeated Ellwood City, 4-0, in the PIAA playoffs opening round.

 2002

Ellwood City won the Section 6 crown with a 10-2 record. Ellwood City compiled a 12-5 overall log. Burrell defeated Ellwood City, 4-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs.

2003

Ellwood City wins the WPIAL and PIAA Championships. Ellwood City was runner-up for the Section 6 crown with a 8-2 record. Ellwood City compiled an overall 21-6 record. Ellwood City defeated Brownsville, 3-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City downed North Catholic, 7-5, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City edged Yough, 2-1, in the WPIAL semi-final round. Ellwood City edged nationally-ranked Blackhawk, 3-2, to win the WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City defeated Shenango, 2-0, in the PIAA opening round playoffs. Ellwood City downed Hickory, 3-1,in eight innings in the PIAA second round. Ellwood City edged Blackhawk, 3-2,  in the PIAA West final. Ellwood City defeated Tamaqua, 3-1, to win the PIAA State Championship.

2012

Ellwood City won its' fifth WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City shared the Section 5 title with a 12-2 record. Ellwood City finished the season with an overall record of 21-3. Ellwood City downed Brownsville, 13-0, in the WPIAL quarter-finals. Ellwood City downed South Fayette, 14-11, in the WPIAL semi-final round. Ellwood City defeated Riverside, 9-7, to win the WPIAL Championship. North Star downed Ellwood City in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs.

1937

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County American Legion Championship. Ellwood City defeated New Castle in the best-of-three series, two games to one, to win the Lawrence County title. Ellwood City defeated Farrell, two games to one, to win the District Championship. Freeport defeated Ellwood City, two games to one, to win the Section Championship. Freeport advanced to the state tournament. Ellwood City compiled a 5-4 record overall in playoff competition.

1938

Ellwood City was declared Lawrence County champion. New Castle declined to participate in a three-game series to determine a champion. Curtisville defeated Ellwood City, two games to none, to win the District Championship. Curtisville was the eventual state runner-up. Ellwood City compiled an 8-2 overall record.

1939

Ellwood City was declared the Lawrence County Champion. New Castle declined to participate in a three-game series to determine a champion. Ellwood City defeated Saxonburg, two games to none, yo win the District championship. Curtisville defeated Ellwood City, two games to none, to win the Section Championship. Curtisville was the eventual state champion.

1940

Ellwood City was declared the Lawrence County Champion. New Castle declined to participate in a three-game series to determine the champion. Chicora defeated Ellwood City, two games to one, to win the District Championship.

1941

Ellwood City was declared the Lawrence County Champion. New Castle declined to participate in a three-game series to determine a champion. Tarentum defeated Ellwood City, two games to none, to win the District Championship.

Ellwood City defeated West Sunbury, two games to none, in the district semi-finals. Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, two games to one, to win the District 25 Championship.

1961

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City was 5-1 in regular season play and the league did not conduct a playoff. Ambridge defeated Ellwood City, two games to none, to win the District 26 Championship. Ambridge was the eventual state champion.

1963

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City won the regular season title and the league did not conduct a playoff. Ellwood City defeated New Brighton, two games to one, to win the District 26 title. Ellwood City defeated Freeport, two games to none, to win the Section 12 crown. Sharpsville defeated Ellwood City, two games to one to win the Region championship and advanced to the state tournament. Ellwood City finished the season with a 21-7 record.

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City won the regular season crown and the league did not conduct a playoff. Highland defeated Ellwood City, two games to one, to win the District 26 Championship. Ellwood City logged a 12-3 overall record.

1969

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City won the regular season crown and the league did not conduct a playoff. Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, two games to one, to win the District 26 Championship. Ellwood City had a 21-15 overall record. 

 1970

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City won the regular season crown and the league did not conduct a playoff. Ellwood City was eliminated from the District 14 playoffs  with three losses without a win. Ellwood City compiled an 18-11 overall record.

1971

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County American Legion Championship. Ellwood City was the regular season champion and the league did not conduct a playoff. Ellwood City was eliminated from the District 14 playoffs with a 1-3 record. Ellwood City compiled a 25-18 overall record.

1972

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City swept New Castle, two games to none, in the semi-final round. Ellwood City swept New Wilmington, two games to none, to win the championship. Baden defeated Ellwood City, 2-0, in the District 14 Championship. Baden finished fourth in the state tournament. Ellwood City compiled a 25-13 overall record.  

1974

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City swept Bessemer, two games to none, to win the championship. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with one win and two losses.

1976

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City defeated New Wilmington, two games to one, to win the championship. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with two wins and two losses. Ellwood City compiles an overall record of 21-17.

1977

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City won the double-elimination championship tournament by sweeping Bessemer in two games in the championship round. Ellwood City reached the finals of the Region Tournament with three straight wins. Hermitage swept Ellwood City in the championship round, two games to none. Ellwood City compiled an overall 18-16 record. 

1979

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City reached the championship round in the double-elimination tournament and defeated Union in the champhionship game to win the title. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with two wins and two losses. Ellwood City compiled a 21-10 record.

1980

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City defeated New Castle, two games to one, in the championship round. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with a one win and two losses. Ellwood City compiled a 14-5 record.

1983

Ellwood City won the Lawrence County Championship. Ellwood City reached the championship round and swept two games from New Castle to win the title. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with two losses without a win. Ellwood City compiled an overall record of 17-12.

1995

Ellwood City won the Beaver County Championship. Ellwood City swepy Brighton Township, two games to none, in the quarter-final round. Ellwood City defeated Blackhawk, two games to none, in the semi-final round. Ellwood City defeated Hopewell, three games to one in the championship series, to win the crown. Ellwood City won three straight games in the Region Tournament to reach the championship round. Franklin swept Ellwood City, two games to one, in the championship round to advance to the state tournament. Ellwood City compiled an overall record of 22-8.

2001 

Ellwood City won the Larence County Championship. Ellwood City won the regular season championship with a record of 11-1. The league did not conduct a playoff. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with a record of one win and two losses. Ellwood City compiled a 12-3 overall record.

2004

Ellwood City won the Lawrence-Mercer County Championship. Ellwood City swept Greenville, two games to none, to win the semi-final series. Ellwood City defeated Shehango, two games to none, to win the championship series, two games to none. Ellwood City advanced to the Region Tournament and was eliminated with a  record of one win and two losses. Ellwood City compiled a 14-7 overall record.
