ELLWOOD CITY WINS FIRST PIAA TITLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY AND FOURTH WPIAL TITLE
Ellwood City won its first PIAA State Championship and fourth WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City finished as runners-up to Shenango for the Section 6-AA title with a 8-2 record. Shenango edged Ellwood City, 2-1, and lost 5-1 to Ellwood City in the regular season. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, finished the season with a 21-6 record.
ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS BROWNSVILLE, 3-1, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS BEHIND HONSAKER
Ellwood City defeated Brownsville, 3-1, in the first round of the WPIAL layoffs at Burgettstown. The win advanced Ellwood City to the quarterfinals against North Catholic. Jeremy Honsaker drove in two runs and scored another to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Aaron Lillibridge led off with a single to left field. After a walk to Tony Cunningham, Kevin Ricciuti bunted both runners into scoring position. Honsaker followed with a single to left field scoring both runners to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Honsaker singled to right field and moved to third base with two outs. Matt Clark beat on an infield hit scoring Honsaker to give Ellwood City a 3-0 lead. Brownsville scored a sigle run in the fifth inning to narrow the score to 3-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning pitcher Cunningham scattered four hits over 4-2/3 innings with six strikeuts. Ricciuti threw 2-1/3 hitless inning of relief to get the save. Honsaker led Ellwood City with two singles, two runs batted in and a run scored.
ELLWOOD CITY JUMPS OUT TO 7-0 LEAD-HANGS ON TO DEFEAT NORTH CATHOLIC, 7-5, ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS
Ellwood City jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held on to defeat North Catholic, 7-5, in the WPIAL-AA quarter-finals at Chippewa Park. The win moved Ellwood City into the semi-final round against Yough. Kevin Ricciuti started on the mound for Ellwood City and threw a scoreless first inning. In the bottom of the inning Aaron Lillibridge doubled and scored on single by Ricciuti to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Honsaker singled to place runners at first and third base. Darin Sharek reached on an infield single to score Ricciuti to up the lead to 2-0. Honsaker scored on the errant throw to first base to raise the lead to 3-0. Mike Fidell followed with a towering home run to left center field to increase the lead to 5-0. With the early lead, Honsaker relieved Ricciuti in the top of the second inning and threw a scoreless frame. Ellwood City added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. With Tony Cunningham and Ricciuti on base, Honsaker drilled a double to right center to score both runners to give Ellwood City a 7-0 lead. North Catholic scored a run in the third inning to narrow the deficit to 7-1. Neither team scored in the next three innings as Ellwood City maintained their 7-1 lead. North Catholic mounted a serious threat to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Two errors contributed to a four-run rally that sliced the Ellwood City lead to 7-5. With the tying run at the plate, Ricciuti returned to the mound and fanned the batter on a called third strike to end the threat and the game. Honsaker with 5-2/3 innings of five-hit relief picked up the victory. Ricciuti hailed down the save. Fidell homered and singled with two RBI for Ellwood City. Honsaker had a double, single and two RB I and Lillibridge added a double and single. Ricciuti singled twice for Ellwood City. Todd Deloplane doubled, singled and drove in two runs and Matt Meeder smacked two doubles for North Catholic.
ELLWOOD CITY EDGES YOUGH, 2-1, IN WPIAL-AA SEMI-FINALS BEHIND RICCIUTI'S 3-HITTER-ELLWOOD CITY HEADS TO PNC PARK FOR WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Kevin Ricciuti fired a three-hitter to lead Ellwood City over Yough, 2-1, in the WPIAL-AA semi-finals at Shaler. The win propelled Ellwood City to a WPIAL-AA Championship against Blackhawk at PNC Park. Ellwood City took a the lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Aaron Lillibridge led of the game with a walk. Tony Cunningham sacrificed Lillibridge to second base. Ricciuti reached out an infield hit sending Lillibridge to third base. Jeremy Honsaker followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Lillibridge to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the second inning Ellwood City scored another solo tally. With two outs, Jay Cortez drew a base on balls. Nick Mancini pinch-ran for Cortez and moved to third base on an error. Lillibridge followed with an infiled single scoring Mancini to increase the Ellwood City lead to 2-1. Ricciuti threw five scoreless innings till the bottom of the sixth inning. Yough's Tom Evans led off the inning with a single and was pinch run for by Dan Elder. Tim Sudunov singled to center field and Jim Sullenburger reached on a bunt single to load the bases with none out. A passed ball scored Elder to slice the deficit to 2-1. With the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run at second base, Yough brought their second, third and clean-up hitter to the plate. Ricciuti responded by fanning all three batters to preserve the 2-1 lead. Ricciuti retired Yough in the bottom of the seventh inning to clinch the victory. Winning pitcher Ricciuti fanned 12 batters and did not allow an earned run. Yough's Evans hurled a two-hitter and allowed one earned run. Lillibridge led Ellwood City with a single, a run batted in and a run scored. Yough finished the year with a record of 20-2.
ELLWOOD CITY EDGES BLACKHAWK, 3-2, AT PNC PARK TO WIN WPIAL-AA CHAMPIONSHIP-RICIUTTI KEYS WOLVERINE WIN OVER NATIONALLY-RANKED BLACKHAWK-ELLWOOD CITY WINS 4TH WPIAL IN HISTORY
Ellwood City edged Blackhawk, 3-2, to win the WPIAL-AA Championship at PNC Park. The victory, under head coach Jeff Fotia, gave the Wolverines their fourth WPIAL title in school history. Kevin Ricciuti fired a three-hitter, drove in the tying run and scored the eventual winning run to lead the Wolverines over the USA Today's 21st -ranked team. Blackhawk scored a run in the top of the first inning to takean early lead. Sean Conley was hit by a pitch to open the game. Conley moved to second base on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third base by Drew Aniceti. Chris Fisher followed with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Conley to give Blackhawk a 1-0 lead. After two scoreless innings Blackhawk added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Fisher singled and was pinch-runner Sam Kristian and stole second base. Joe Hoey sacrifice bunt advanced Kristian to third base. Robert Jones followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Kristian to up the Blackhawk lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ellwood City rallied for three runs to take the lead. Levon Hudson reached base on an error to start the inning. Lou Nocera pinch-hit and sacrificed Hudson to third base. Aaron Lillibridge followed with a single to left filed scoring Hudson to slice the deficit to 2-1. Lillibridge advanced to second base on the play at the plate. With two outs, Ricciuti ripped a single into left filed scoring Lillibride to tie the score at 2-2. When the throw to the infield missed the cut-off man, Ricciuti advanced to second base. The catcher attempted to retire Ricciuti at second base but his throw sailed into right center field. Ricciuti advanced to third base and then raced home to score the go-ahead run to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. Ricciuti allowed a single in the sixth inning with one out before retiring the next two batters. In the top of the seventh inning, cheered on by the large Wolverine "Blue Wave" crowd, Ricciuti retired the first two batters. Ricciuti ended the game with three-pitch strikeout-registering 92, 89, 93 miles-per-hour on the PNC Park scoreboard. Winning pitcher Ricciuti held a Blackhawk offense averaging 10-1/2 runs a game to three singles. Blackhawk pitcher Jones also allowed just three singles.
ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS SHENANGO, 2-0, IN PIAA PLAYOFF OPENING ROUND BEHIND CUNNINGHAM
Ellwood City downed Shenango, 2-0, in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs at Shaler. Tony Cunningham twirled a four-hitter to lead the Wolverines. Neither team scored through the first three innings. in the bottom of the fourth inning Ellwood City scored the only runs of the game. Cunningham led off the inning with a single and Nick Mancini replaced him the bases as a pinch-runner. Kevin Ricciuti followed with a single sending Cunningham to second base. Jeremy Honsaker followed with a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners into scoring position. Darin Sharek received a walk to load the bases. Mike Fidell followed with a two-run single scoring Mancini to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Ricciuti was obstructed rounding third base and was awarded home to up the Ellwood City lead to 2-0. Cunningham shutout Shenango in the final three innings to sew up the win. Winning pitcher Cunningham fanned 10 batters on the way to a four-hit shutout. Adam LaScola tossed a five-hitter and allowed two earned runs for Shenango. Ricciuti singled twice to lead Ellwood City at the plate. Mark Glasser led Shenango with two singles.
ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS HICKORY, 3-1, IN EIGHT INNINGS IN PIAA-AA QUARTER-FINALS BEHIND RICCIUTI
Ellwood City downed Hickory, 3-1, in the eight innings in the PIAA-AA quarterfinals at Chippewa Park. Kevin Ricciuti scattered five hits over eight innings and smacked three hits to lead the Wolverines. Ellwood City took a an early lead with a run in the first inning. with one out, Tony Cunningham looped a single into left filed and stole second base. Ricciuti followed with a single ripped up the middle to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Hickory tied the score in the bottom of the third inning. After singles by Aaron Brest and Craig Osborne, an error on a pickoff attempt scored Brest to knot the score at 1-1. Ellwood City threatened in the top of the sixth inning. Ricciuti doubled off the fence to lead off the inning. After a walk, a force out and two runners caught stealing ended the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hickory mounted a threat of their own. Greg Mentrak singled to lead off the inning. With one out, the Wolverines erred on a double-play attempt placing runners at first and third base. An intentional walk loaded the bases. Ellwood City shortstop Jeremy Honsaker fielded a bouncer that ran up his arm and fired to the plate to force Mentrak at home plate for the second out. Ricciuti fanned the next batter to force extra innings. Aaron Lillibridge led off the eighth inning with a single to right field. Cunningham followed with a sacrifice sending Lillibridge to second base. Ricciuti followed by receiving an intentional walk. A ground ball moved both runners up into scoring position. With two outs, Darin Sharek followed with an infield single scoring Lillibridge to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. When the throw eluded the first baseman, Ricciuti stormed home from second base to up the lead to 3-1. Ricciuti retired all three batters in the eighth inning to preserve the victory. Winning pitcher Ricciuti fanned 13 batters and did not allow an earned run. Dustin Kulka limited Ellwood City to eight hits and two earned runs. Ricciuti led Ellwood City at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI. Mike Fidell added two singles. Mentrak led Hickory with two singles.
ELLWOOD CITY EDGES BLACKHAWK, 3-2, IN PIAA-AA WEST FINAL TO ADVANCE TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME-RICCIUTI FIRES THREE-HITTER-HONSAKER, SHAREK KEY HITS
Ellwood City edged Blackhawk, 3-2, in the PIAA-AA West Final at Butler's Pullman Park to advance to the state championship. Ellwood City knocked of previously nationally-ranked Blackhawk for the second time in two weeks to advance to the first state championship game in school history. Kevin Ricciuti fired a three-hitter and Jeremy Honsaker and Darin Sharek delivered key hits for the Wolverines. Ellwood City jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Tony Cunningham drew a base on balls. Ricciuti followed with a double into left field to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Nick Mancini pinch ran for Ricciuti and moved to third base on Honsaker's infield single. Sharek followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Mancini to increase the lead to 2-0. Blackhawk responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Sean Conley led off with a double. Conley moved to third base on a sacrifice and scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 2-1. With a runner at third base, Ricciuti retired the next two batters on a strike out and pop up. After a scoreless innings, Ellwood City scored the eventual game-winning run in the third inning. After Honsaker doubled to right center field, Sharek smacked a single to left field scoring Honsaker to up the lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning Blackhawk sliced into the Ellwood City lead. Dom Nardone doubled to left field and moved to third base on an error. Conley followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Nardone to redue the lead to 3-2. Ricciuti retired the next two batters to end the threat. In the sixth inning, Joey Hoey led off with a single and moved to second base on a bunt. Ricciuti retired the next two batters to end the inning. Blackhawk mounted a final threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nardone led off the inning with a walk. Chris Janicki popped a foul sacrifice bunt attempt to the third base dugout. Catcher Jay Cortez leaped from the catcher's box and stretched out to make a tumbling catch to retire Janicki. Ricciuti retired the final two batters to end the game. Winning pitcher Ricciuti fanned seven batters while holding the powerful Blackhawk lineup to three hits. Blackhawk relief pitcher Robert Jones held Ellwood City one hit in the final 4-1/3 innings. Honsaker led the Wolverines with a double and single. Sharek added a single and sacrifice fly with two RBI. Ricciuti and Levon Hudson added doubles. Conley and Nardone doubled for Blackhawk.
ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS TAMAQUA, 3-1, TO WIN PIAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP-FIRST IN SCHOOL HISTORY-RICCIUTI HURLS FIVE-HITTER-LILLIBRIDGE'S DOUBLE BREAKS 1-1 TIE IN SIXTH INNING
Ellwood City downed Tamaqua, 3-1, to win the PIAA State Championship at Riverside Stadium in Harrisburg. The victory gave Ellwood City their first state title in school history. Kevin Ricciuti hurled a five-hitter and Aaron Lillibridge singled in the go-ahead run to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, ended the season with a 14-game winning streak. Tamaqua took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Spotts smacked an infield single of off the left hand of Ricciuti with one out. Spotts moved to third base on a passed ball and scored an a fielder's choice to give Tamaqua a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines tied the score in the top of the second inning. Mike Fidell looped a ball into right field for a double. After a walk to Leon Hudson, Matt Clark delivered an RBI-single to right field scoring Fidell to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team scored in the next three innings to keep the game knotted at 1-1. In the top of the sixth inning, the Wolverines would break the deadlock. Pinch-hitter Lou Nocera drew a base on balls and was pinch-run for by Nick Mancini. T.J. Post followed with a walk sending Mancini to second base. Lillibridge followed with a single inside the first base line scoring Mancini with the go-ahead run to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. Ellwood City added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Ricciuti led of the frame with a single. Brett Smith pinch-ran and moved to second base on a wild pitch. When a pickoff attempt at second base was thrown into center, Smith moved to third base. Darin Sharek followed with a sacrifce fly to center field scoring Smith to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Tamaqua mounted a strong threat. With one out, Alex Zukas drew a base on balls. Spotts followed with sharp single into left field to place the tying runs on base. Caleb Calarco launched a long fly to centerfield that was caught by Levon Hudson for the second out. Chris Wehr followed with a walk to load the bases to place the winning run on first base. Ricciuti ended the threat and the game with a final strikeout to give Ellwood City the state title. Winning pitcher Ricciuti did not allow an earned run while scattering five hits. Fidell led Ellwood City with a double and single. Allen Graver and Spots led Tamaqua with two singles. The Wolverines, the first Lawrence County team to win a state title in 22 years, ended the season with a 21-6 record.

Ellwood City registered a 13-8 overall record for the season. Ellwood City logged a 5-3 record in exhibition play. The Wolverines were 8-4 in Section 5-AA play with Beaver Falls winning the league title. Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, 3-1 and 5-4. Beaver Falls won the WPIAL AA title.
CENTER DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 3-1, BEHIND ROSSI IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS
Center downed Ellwood City, 3-1, in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Neshannock. John Rossi threw a six-hitter to lead Center to the victory. Center opened an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Garrett singled and moved to second on a ground out. J.R. DeWeese followed with a double scoring Garrett to take a 1-0 lead. After three scoreless innings, Ellwood City knotted the score in the top of the fifth inning. Kevin MacDonald walked and and scored on a double by Greg Lynn to tie the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Center rallied for two runs to break the deadlock. Center loaded the bases with one out. Drew Hulme was hit by a pitch forcing in a run to give Center a 2-1 lead. Mike Kupper's ground out scored another run to increase the Center lead to 3-1. Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the seventh inning. inning pitcher Rossi allowed for six hits and fanned seven batters. Gino Ceriani threw a five-hitter for Ellwood City and allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters. DeWeese led Center with a double and RBI. Lynn led Ellwood City with an RBI-double.

ELLWOOD CITY COMPILES 21-3 RECORD-WINS 5TH WPIAL RECORD IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Ellwood City won the WPIAL AA Championship for the fifth time in school history. registered a 21-3 overall record for the season. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, were 12-2 in Section 5-AA play and shared the league title with Riverside. Riverside defeated Ellwood City, 1-0, and Ellwood City defeated Riverside, 13-3.
ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS BROWNSVILLE, 13-0, IN QUARTER-FINALS OF WPIAL AA PLAYOFFS-KERNS FIRES NO-HITTER, SMACKS TWO DOUBLES, SINGLE
Ellwood City defeated Brownsville, 13-0, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AA Playoffs at Pullman Park. Christian Kerns led Ellwood City on the mound and the plate. Kerns fired a no-hitter and rapped two doubles and a single. Ellwood City jumped out of the gate with three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied for four more runs in the top of the second inning to up the lead to 7-0. Ellwood City scored two more runs in the top of the third inning as the lead ballooned to 9-0. Ellwood City made the lead 10-0 with a single tally in the fourth inning. Ellwood City closed the scoring with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to account for the 13-0 final score. The 10-run rule was enforced and the game ended after five innings.Winning pitcher Kerns fanned 10 batters with one walk on the way to his no-hitter. Kerns also led offensively for Ellwood City with two doubles, a single and two RBI. Matt Germanoski tripled and doubled with an RBI. Seth Mley singled twice with two RBI and Zach Mathias singled twice with an RBI. Anthony Carusone singled twice and Greg Lynn, Jared Vetica, Justin Vetica and Matt Morella added singles for Ellwood City.
ELLWOOD CITY HANGS ON FOR 14-11 WIN OVER SOUTH FAYETTE IN SEMI-FINALS OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS-MEET RIVERSIDE IN WPIAL FINALS
Ellwood City opened up a 9-0 lead after three innings and held on to defeat South Fayette in the semi-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at North Allegheny. The win propelled Ellwood City into the WPIAL finals against crosstown rival Riverside. Ellwood City scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Ellwood City added another run in the bottom of the second inning to up their lead to 6-0. Ellwood City added three more runs n the bottom of the third inning to increase their lead to 9-0. South Fayette rallied for six runs in the top of the fourth inning to slice the Ellwood City lead to 9-6. South Fayette crept closer with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning o close the deficit to 9-8. In the bottom of the fifth inning Ellwood City tallied a run to up their lead to 10-8. South Fayette scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to crawl back to a one-run deficit at 10-9. Ellwood City responded to rally for four runs to raise their lead to 14-9. South Fayette scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to account for the 14-11 final. Matt Gemanoski led Ellwood City with a triple, single and three RBI. Greg Lynn doubled and singled with one RBI and Christian Kerns added a double. Anthony Carusone and Matt Morella singled with an RBI apiece. Zach Mathias added a single. Michael Fetchet tripled and rapped three singles for South Fayette. Winning pitcher Kerns allowed five earned runs in 3-1/3 innings. Carusone picked up the save with 3-2/3 relief allowing two earned runs.
ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS RIVERSIDE, 9-7, TO WIN WPIAL AA TITLE-FIFTH CROWN IN SCHOOL HISTORY-MATHIAS RAPS THREE HITS
Ellwood City downed Riverside, 9-7, to win the WPIAL AA Championship at Consol Energy Field in Washington. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings against their crosstown rival. Zach Mathias led Ellwood City with a double and two singles. Ellwood City won its fifth WPIAL crown in school history.
Ellwood City scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Riverside added a tally in their half to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ellwood City erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to increase their lead to 7-1. After Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the third inning, Riverside rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to slice the Ellwood City lead to 7-5. Neither team scored in the fourth inning before Riverside added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to narrow the Ellwood City lead to 7-6.
In the top of the sixth inning Ellwood City extended their lead with a two-run rally. Matt Morella reached on an two-base error. Tanner Walsh pinch-ran for Morella and scored on Mathias RBI-single to up the Ellwood City lead to 8-6. Courtesy runner Tony Joseph ran for Mathias and scored on Seth Mley's double to add an insurance run to give Ellwood City a 9-6 lead. Riverside mounted a final threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Falk singled and Ian Sutherland drew a base on balls. Blaise McCarty drew a walk to load the bases. Dylan Jones grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Falk to cut the Ellwood City lead to 9-7. With the tying run at second base, second baseman Greg Lynn corralled a pop-up fly into short right field to seal the victory.
Mathias led Ellwood City with a double, two singles and one RBI. Anthony Carusone doubled and single with two RBI and Mley doubled, singled and drove in a run. Lynn singled twice with two RBI and Matt Germanoski and Christian Kerns added singles. Sutherland led Riverside with a double, single and two RBI. McCarty singled twice with an RBI. Falk, Devin Kelosky and Tyler Whitlach added singles.
Kerns was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City. He allowed seven hits and six earned runs in a complete-game effort.
NORTH STAR SHUTS OUT ELLWOOD CITY, 2-0, IN PIAA AA FIRST ROUND BEHIND RICE'S THREE-HITTER
North Star shutout Ellwood City in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Brantley Rice fired a three-hitter to lead North Star to the victory.
Rice and Ellwood City's Christian Kerns hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel. While Rice was holding down the Ellwood City attack, Kerns threw a perfect game through 5-1/3 innings against North Star until Dalton Rice singled with one out in the sixth inning. Ellwood City had runners on third base three times with two outs throughout the first six innings but failed to score a run. In the top of the seventh inning North Star punched through for the only runs of the game. Brantley Rice led off the inning with a single. Tony Strasiser as hit by a pitch to place runners at first and second base. After a sacrifce bunt moved the runners into scoring position, an intentional walk loaded the bases. Derek Mullen followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Rice to give North Star a 1-0 lead. Another walk reloaded the bases before an error scored Strasiser to increase the North Star lead to 2-0. Ellwood City failed to threaten in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Winning pitcher Rice twirled a three-hitter and struck out seven batters for North Star. Ellwood City's Kerns threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and allowing one earned run.

Ellwood City registered a 14-11 overall record. The Wolverines were 7-5 in Section 2-AAA play with Riverside winning the league title. Riverside defeated Ellwood City, 8-1 and 10-0. Riverside won the WPIAL AAA title.
ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS CHARLEROI, 6-2, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS
Ellwood City defeated Charleroi, 6-2, in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Ellwood City scored three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull away from Charleroi.
Winning pitcher Tyler Good allowed three hits over 6-2/3 innings to gain the win for Ellwood City. Reliever Noah Rinker notched the final out. Shane Sedgwick led Ellwood City a the plate with two singles.
ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS STEEL VALLEY, 7-2, IN QUARTER FINALS WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS BEHIND GOOD
Ellwood City downed Steel Valley, 7-2, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Tyler Good scattered seven hits to lead Ellwood City to the victory.
Ellwood City stunned Steel Valley with four runs in the top of the opening frame. Two walks, a hit batsmen and four straight singles gave Ellwood City a 4-0 lead. Ellwood City upped their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Anthony Roth. Steel Valley scored single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Ellwood City lead to 5-2. Ellwood City added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 7-2. Steel Valley failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning. Winning pitcher Good allowed seven hits and two earned runs for Ellwood City. Mitch Frazier and Noah Rinker singled twice with one RBI. Rick Pitrelli added two singles for Ellwood City.
MT. PLEASANT EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 2-1, IN SEMI-FINALS OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS BEHIND MCCORMICK TWO-HITTER
Mt. Pleasant edged Ellwood City, 2-1, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Brandon McCormick fired a two-hitter for Mt. Pleasant.
Mt. Pleasant held a 2-0 lead after scoring two unearned runs through the first three innings. Ellwood City cut the Mt. Pleasant lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Max Keally and Rick Pitrelli singled and move into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A ground out scored Keally to reduce the deficit to 2-1. But Ellwood City did not threaten the rest of the way. Winning pitcher McCormick allowed just two hits and one earned run for Mt. Pleasant. Noah Rinker scattered six hits and did not allow an earned run for Ellwood City. Keally and Pitrelli had singled for Ellwood City.

Ellwood City scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Brownsville, 5-3, in the WPIAL consolation game at Washington and Jefferson's Ross Park. Ellwood City combined three hits and three errors to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brownsville scored a run in the second inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. Brownsville added another run in the third inning to slice the Ellwood City lead to 4-2. Ellwood City scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-2. Brownsville scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the 5-3 final score.
Noah Rinker was the winning pitcher in relief for Ellwood City. Rinker did not allow an earned run in 3-2/3 innings and fanned five batters. Anthony Roth led Ellwood City at the plate with two singles. Devon Hudspath added a double.
SHARPSVILLE BEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 5-2, IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PIAA AAA PLAYOFFS
Sharpsville beat Ellwood City, 5-2, in the first round of the PIAA AAA Playoffs at Slippery Rock University. Sharpsville took advantage of six hit batsman to score five runs in the contest. Sharpsville scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits and two hit batsman to take a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City scored a run in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sharpsville responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to increase their lead to 4-1. After a scoreless fourth inning, Ellwood City scored a solo tally in the top of the fourth inning to halve the Sharpsville lead to 4-2. Sharpsville scored a run in the bottom of the inning to up their lead to 5-2. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

ELLWOOD CITY EDGES DEER LAKES, 2-1, IN LAST INNING OF FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS
Ellwood City scored in the seventh inning to edge Deer Lakes, 2-1, in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Neshannock. Noah Magill scored from third base on a third strike throw to first base to break a 1-1 deadlock. After four scoreless innings, Deer Lakes scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cory Newman drew a base on balls with two outs. Justin Brannagan followed with a double to left field scoring Newman to give Deer Lakes a 1-0 lead. Two more walks loaded the bases before second baseman Brady Welsh made a fine catch on a pop-up to short left field. Ellwood City knotted the score with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Gibbons walked and courtesy runner Zion Bunney took his place at first base. Sam DeCaprio followed with a double to left field scoring Bunney to tie the score at 1-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City scored the game-winning run. Doug Balin opened the inning with a walk. Magill pinch-ran and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Joe Rush bunted and beat the throw to first base. After a strikeout on a pitch in the dirt, the Deer Lakes catcher threw to first base to retire the batter. But Magill broke for the plate and scored to give Ellwood City a 2-1 lead. Deer Lakes threatened with two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but a strike out ended the game. Winning pitcher Ryan Gibbons allowed three hits over 6-1/3 innings. Ryan Hampton and Zach Polojac relieved in the seventh inning. Polojac notched the save. Greg Geis tossed a five-hitter for Deer Lakes with six strikeouts. DiCaprio led Ellwood City with a double. Rick Pitrelli, James Meehan, Ashton Wilson and Rush added singles. Brannagan led Deer Lakes with a double.
KEYSTONE OAKS DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 9-6, IN THE QUARTER-FINALS OF THE WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS
Keystone Oaks defeated Ellwood City, 9-6, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Upper St. Clair. Six unearned runs crossed the plate for Keystone Oaks to seal the defeat for Ellwood City.
After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City scored twice in the top of the second inning. James Meehan drew a walk and John Biskup followed with a single. Ashton Wilson followed with a double scoring both runners to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning Keystone Oaks scored three unearned runs to take the lead. With two outs a triple by Colby Rockacy and two walks loaded the bases. An errant throw on a ground ball allowed three runs to score to give Keystone Oaks a 3-2 lead. Ellwood City tied the score with a bunt in the top of the fifth inning. Rick Pitrelli doubled, moved to third base and scored on a squeeze play by Sam DiCaprio. But Keystone Oaks rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning to break the tie. With two outs, Keystone Oaks got six singles and two errors to take a 9-3 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City scored three runs. Brady Welsh and Ryan Gibbons reached on errors and Pitrelli walked to load the bases. DiCaprio and Meehan followed with RBI-singles to cut the deficit to 9-5. Ellwood City scored another run to reduce the deficit to 9-6 but Keystone Oaks got the final three outs to end the game.
