ELLWOOD CITY HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL BEGINS-FIRST HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM IN LAWRENCE COUNTY TO JOIN WPIAL


High school varsity  baseball begins at Lincoln High School. Ellwood City becomes the first high school in Lawrence County to join a section in the WPIAL. Ellwood City competed in a section which included Aliquippa, Beaver, Beaver Falls, Ambridge and New Brighton. Ellwood City compiled a 5-5 record in the section with Aliquippa winning the Section 4 crown. Aliquippa went on to win the WPIAL title. 


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS NEW BRIGHTON, 7-0, IN INAUGURAL HIGH SCHOOL GAME


Ellwood City downed New Brighton, 7-0, at New Brighton in the first game ever played by a Lincoln High School baseball team. Joe Ford and Chuck Milnes combined on a three-hitter. Ford was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City.

ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS SHARON, 4-3, TO WIN FIRST SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP-DESPORT'S DOUBLE DRIVES IN WINNING RUN IN NINTH INNING


Ellwood City edged Sharon, 4-3, in nine innings to win the first baseball Section Championship in school history at Sharon. Jack Desport doubled in Eugene Bilo with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning for Ellwood City. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Howard Gills, won the section title with a 7-1 record. Both teams entered the final game with a 6-1 record. After two scoreless innings, Sharon scored a run in the bottom of the third inning. Price singled  and scored on two errors to  give Sharon  a 1-0 lead. After two more scoreless innings, Ellwood City rallied for three runs to take the lead. Desport was hit by a pitch and Ben Calderone drew a base on balls. After an out, Chuck Milnes walked to load the bases. A ground out sent Desport home to knot the score at 1-1.  Joe Ford followed with a single scoring Calderone and Milnes to raise the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. Sharon scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Andy Butchko tripled and scored on Sankey's sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2. Sharon was down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but rallied to tie the game. Anderson singled and Listiak followed with a single. S. Garay reached on an error scoring Anderson to tie the game at 3-3 to force extra innings. In the top of the ninth inning, Ellwood City scored the game-winning run. With one out, Eugene Bilo singled and stole second base and third base. Desport followed with a double down the left field line scoring Bilo to give Ellwood City a 4-3 lead. Sharon got two runners aboard in the bottom of the ninth inning but a ground out and pop put ended the game. Winning pitcher Ford scattered nine hits and allowed one earned  run in nine innings. Ford also led Ellwood City at the plate with two singles and two RBI. Desport added a double. Butchko led Sharon with a triple and single.  


ALIQUIPPA RALLIES IN SEVENTH INNING TO DEFEAT ELLWOOD CITY, 6-5, IN WPIAL PLAYOFF OPENER BEFORE OVER 2,000 FANS-DESPORT RAPS HOMER, TWO SINGLES  FOR ELLWOOD CITY


Aliquippa rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Ellwood City, 6-5, in the WPIAL playoffs at Ewing Park Field. The game originally scheduled for Beaver was rescheduled at Ewing Park Field with Aliquippa being the home team. A crowd of more than 2,000 witnessed the game. Jack Desport led the game off with a home run to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Aliquippa rallied for  two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Iannini singled and was sacrificed to second base. Jim Zugay reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second base on the play. Karas squeezed home Iannini  to the the game at 1-1. Zugay hustled around on the throw to first base to score to give Aliquippa at 2-1 lead. Ellwood City retook the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Desport walked and stole second base to lead off the inning. With two outs, Chuck Milnes drew a base on balls. Joe Dougherty smacked a single to right field scoring Desport to tie the score at 2-2.  Joe Ford reached on an error scoring Milnes to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. Ellwood City added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Al Miller singled and stole second base. Dougherty followed with a single scoring Miller to increase Ellwood City's lead to 4-2. Aliquippa knotted the score in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Kosanovich singled and Dercode and Nelsh drew base on balls to load the bases. Iannini followed with a single scoring Kosonavich and Dercode to tie the score at 4-4. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Ellwood City turned a pitcher-to-catcher-to first base 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. Ellwood City took the lead again in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Desport singled and went to third base on Ben Calderone's single. A wild pitch scored Desport to put Ellwood City ahead, 5-4. With two runners in scoring position, two infield pop ups ended the inning. But Aliquippa rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning for two runs to win the game. Dercole led off with the inning a double.  Welsh bunted safely for a single to lace runners at first and third base. Welsh stole second base to place both runners in scoring position. A ground out followed with both runners holding their base. Iannini reached base on an error scoring Dercole to tie the score at 5-5. Cable laid down a bunt scoring Nelsh with the winning run to give Aliquippa the 6-5 victory. Nelsh led Aliquippa with a triple and single and two walks and Dercole added a double. Desport led Ellwood City with a home run, two singles and a walk. Sugay was the winning pitcher in relief for Aliquippa. He retired six batters in order in relief. Aliquippa, three outs from defeat, went on to win the WPIAL title.

ELLWOOD CITY SHARES SECTION 7 TITLE-LOSES ONE-GAME PLAYOFF TO BEAVER FALLS-LOGS 7-2 MARK


Ellwood City registered a 7-2 record for the seasons. Ellwood City was 1-0 in exhibition play. The Wolverines, under Howard Gills, shared the  

 Section 7 regular season title with a 7-1 mark. Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City in a one-game playoff to win the section crown.


BROWN FANS RECORD 20 BATTERS AS ELLWOOD CITY EDGES BEAVER FALLS IN 14 INNINGS, 3-2


Dale Brown struck out 20 batters as Ellwood City edged Beaver Falls, 3-2, in 14 innings at Ewing Park Field. Ellwood City scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning to snap a 2-2 tie score. Ron Doak singled, was sacrificed to second base, went to third base on a balk and scored on a passed ball to give Ellwood City  a 3-2 win. Winning pitcher Brown allowed three singles on the way to the record 20 strikeout performance. Losing pitcher Tom Kirkpatrick  surrendered three singles for Beaver Falls.


BEAVER FALLS DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 3-0, BEHIND KIRKPATRICK , JAMES TO WIN SECTION 7 TITLE PLAYOFF


 Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, 3-0, to win the Section 7 title playoff game at Beaver. The one-game playoff, played in a steady drizzle, was required after Ellwood City and Beaver Falls tied with 7-1 records during the regular season. Tom Kirkpatrick fired a two-hitter and Dick James doubled and singled to lead Beaver Falls. Neither team scored through the first three innings. Ellwood City threatened in the second inning on a double by Paul Petrak and a walk to Ron Kellner with two outs. But Kirkpatrick notched a strikeout to end the inning. In the fourth inning, Beaver Falls scored the first run of the game. With one out, Jim Nellas drew a walk and Bob Veon followed with a single. Joe Walton was walked to load the bases. Bert Milnes followed with a long sacrifice fly to right field to Nellas to give Beaver Falls a 1-0 lead. Beaver Falls added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Joe Walton walked and Milnes reached on an error. Walton went to third base on a passed ball and Milnes stole second base on the next pitch. Dick James followed with a single to score Walton and Milnes to give Beaver Falls the final 3-0 winning margin. Winning pitcher Kirkpatrick allowed two hits and fanned 10 batters. Dale Brown allowed four hits and struck out nine batters. James led Beaver Falls at the plate with a double, single and two RBI. Petrak doubled and Haines Fred Haines singled for Ellwood City.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS SECTION 7 CHAMPIONSHIP-LOGS 13-3 RECORD


Ellwood City won the Section 7 championship.  Ellwood City compiled a 7-1 exhibition mark. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, won the section title with a 6-2  record and ended the year with a 13-3 overall record.


ELLWOOD CITY RALLIES FOR THREE RUNS IN FINAL AT-BAT TO EDGE BEAVER, 5-4, IN WPIAL PLAYOFF OPENER


Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Beaver, 5-4, in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Beaver Falls. Ellwood City trailed 4-2 entering their final at-bat before the comeback. After three scoreless innings, Ellwood City opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ron Hughes walked and stole second base and Stan Platek followed with a walk. Fusco followed with a ground ball that was thrown away attempting to get Hughes at third base. Hughes scored on the error to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Bob Mallary reached on an error sending Platek to third base. Bill Frazier followed with a long sacrifice fly to up the lead to 2-0. Beaver rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Tony Taormina singled before Fred Bruce and Bill Lintz drew base on balls. An error scored Taomina to slice the deficit to 2-1. Farley followed with a single to put Beaver ahead 3-2. A passed ball scored Lintz to increase the Beaver lead to 4-2. Three outs from defeat, Ellwood City rallied for three runs to win the game. Joe Raman smacked an inside-the-park home run to narrow the deficit to 4-3. Frank Rocco singled and Hughes followed with a double scoring Rocco to tie the game at 4-4. An error followed on the play allowing Hughes to advance to third base. Platek followed with a single scoring Hughes to give Ellwood City the 5-4 victory. Raman picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Platek led Ellwood City at the plate with a double and single. Dick Gaskell added two singles. Raman homered and Hughes added a double. UNION DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 2-0, BEHIND ONE-HITTER BY HALL


Dave Hall fired a one-hitter as Union defeated Ellwood City, 2-0, in the second round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Wampum. After a scoreless first inning, Union opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Joe Busin doubled and moved to third base on a ground out.  An RBI-single by Richard Pagley scored Busin to give Union a 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Union increased their lead to 2-0 on a home run to left field by Ray McKay. Winning pitcher Hall allowed only one single and struck out eight batters. Ron Hughes surrendered five hits for Ellwood City. McKay paced Union with a home run. Ron Plano rapped a triple and Busin added a double. Frank Rocco singled for Ellwood City.

Ellwood City won the Section 6 championship and finished the season with an 11-3 mark overall. The Wolverines, under Head  Coach Bill Spellman, compiled a 7-1 record in section play.


BEAVER TRIMS ELLWOOD CITY, 6-0, IN WPIAL PLAYOFFS OPENING ROUND BEHIND CUMMINGS


 Beaver downed Ellwood City, 6-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Ambridge. Pat Cummings fired a three-hitter to lead Beaver to the victory. The game was shortened to six innings due to rain. After a scoreless first inning, Beaver erupted for six runs in the top of the second inning. Cummings was hit by a pitch and Bob Garvin walked to lead off the inning. Bob Shaw followed with a double scoring Cummings to give Beaver a 1-0 lead. Jim Blose blooped a single scoring Garvin and Shaw to up the lead to 3-0. Ward singled and Catanese walked to load the bases. Casp singled in Blose and Ward to increase the lead to 5-0. Cummings singled scoring Catanese to raise the lead to 6-0. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning pitcher Cummings allowed three singles and fanned 11 batters for Beaver. Ron Hughes threw 5-2/3 innings of shutout relief  for Ellwood City. Ward tripled and singled to lead Beaver. Catanese added a double and single and Allen singled twice. Joe Raman, Ralph Pratt and Ron Mazzano singled for Ellwood City.

Ellwood City compiled a 9-4 record for the season overall. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, tied Beaver Falls and Aliquippa for the Section 6 regular season title with a 5-3 record. Aliquippa won the section crown playoff. 



BEAVER FALLS SLIPS BY ELLWOOD CITY, 2-1, IN SECTION 6 PLAYOFF DESPITE NAVOLIO ONE-HITTER


Beaver Falls scored two unearned runs to slip by Ellwood City, 2-1, in the Section 6 playoff game at Beaver Falls. Ellwood City's Jim Navolio allowed just one hit but four errors gave the victory to Beaver Falls. Ellwood City scored a run to take the  the lead in the top of the second inning. John Ungham doubled and Ray Fray smashed an RBI-single to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Beaver Falls tied the score in the In the bottom of the inning. Terry Timmons drew a base on balls. Navolio's pickoff throw easily trapped Timmons but the throw to second base was dropped for an error. Rich Neidbala reached on an error and Timmons scored from second base to tie the game at 1-1. Ellwood City got back-to-back singles by Ralph Ferrante and Dave Weingartner in the third inning with one out but but runners were stranded on base. Beaver Falls scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dick Barnes walked and reached second base when Tom House's sacrifice bunt was misplayed at first base. Dick Blackwood's bouncer was misplayed allowing Barnes to score to give Beaver Falls a 2-1 lead. Ellwood City failed to score in the seventh inning with the victory going to Beaver Falls. Winning pitcher Kokoski fanned 10 batters in his four-hit performance. Losing pitcher Jim Navolio allowed just one-hit and fanned eight batters for Ellwood City. House had the only hit for Beaver Falls. Ungham led Ellwood City with a double.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP-ENDS WITH 23-2 RECORD 


Ellwood City won the WPIAL Championship for the first time in history. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, won the Section 5 title with a 7-1 record. Ellwood City started the year with fifteen straight wins.  Ellwood City defeated McKeesport, 4-1, in the WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City ended the season with a 23-2 record overall.


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS RIVERSIDE, 8-1, IN WPIAL PLAYOFF OPENER BEHIND POHOLSKY, WHITE


Ellwood City defeated Riverside, 8-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs at New Brighton. Bob Poholsky fired a five-hitter, Pat White homered and singled  to lead Ellwood City. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City  took the lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Bill Pratt doubled to right-center field. After a strikeout, White homered down the left-field line to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City added two more runs in the third inning. John Pratt singled and was forced out by Tom Blythe. With two outs, Laitenen singled Blythe to third base. Bob Latiano drew a walk to load the bases. Bill Pratt followed with a double scoring Blythe and Laitenen to up the lead to 4-0. Ellwood City tallied a solo tally in the top of the fourth inning. White singled and stole second base. An error and a sacrifice fly by Blythe scored White to increase the lead to 5-0. Riverside scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Ken Anderson doubled to leftfield with two outs. Drew Szabo singled Anderson to third base. Shingleton singled to left field scoring Anderson to cut the deficit to 5-1. After a scoreless fifth inning, Ellwood City rallied for three more runs in the sixth inning. White drew a walk to lead off the inning. White stole second base and John Pratt drew a base on balls. Blythe doubled scoring White to up the lead to 6-1. A two-base error scored Pratt and Blythe to increase the lead to 8-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning pitcher Bob Poholsky threw a five hitter and fanned 12 batters for Ellwood City. White smacked homered, singled and drove in two runs. John Pratt tripled and singled and Bill Pratt doubled twice. Laitenen singled twice and Blythe added a double. Anderson led Riverside with a double.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS HAR-BRACK, 3-1, IN WPIAL QUARTER-FINALS BEHIND POHOLSKY'S 3-HITTER


Ellwood City defeated Har-Brack, 3-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at Aliquippa. Bob Poholsky fired a three-hitter to lead Ellwood City. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City  took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Bob Latiano belted a home run over the 380-foot left-field fence to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Ellwood  City added another run. John Pratt led off the inning with a triple. After an out, Jim Bukac hit a sacrifice fly scoring Pratt to increase the Ellwood City lead to 2-0. Har-Brack scored in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Ellwood City lead. Jack McCullough singled to lead off the inning. Bob Acee bunted and McCullough was safe on the throw to second base to put two runners aboard. Jerry McGrath reached on an error to load the bases with none out. A ground out scored McCullough to cut the deficit to 2-1. With runners at second and third base, Jim Gogolowski hit a high bouncer to shortstop Trippy Blythe who tagged McGrath going to third base and fired to Jim Bukac at first base to complete the double play ending the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Latiano reached on an error and moved to second base on a passed ball. Bill Pratt walked and both runners moved up on a passed ball. After a ground out, Pat White hit a sacrifice fly to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning Pitcher Poholsky allowed three hits in a route-going performance for Ellwood City. Ed Kort tossed a four-hitter for Har-Brack. John Pratt led Ellwood City with a triple and single. Latiano smacked a home run. McCullough led Har-Brack with two singles. Jerry Hozniak added a double.     


ELLWOOD CITY ROUTS MONTOUR, 11-2, IN WPIAL SEMI-FINALS-ADVANCE TO WPIAL FINALS BEHIND LATIANO, BUKAC


Ellwood City romped over Montour, 11-2, in the  semi-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at New Brighton. With the victory, Ellwood City advanced to the WPIAL Championship for the first time ever. Bob Lataino and Jim Bukac led Ellwood City with three hits apiece. After three scoreless innings, Ellwood City scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Bukac singled and went to third base on a single by Toy Laitenen. Latiano smacked a double off the left field fence to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Bill Pratt singled sending Latiano to third base.Randy Chesko followed with a single scoring Latiano to up the lead to 3-0. Ellwood City pulled away with  five more runs in the fifth inning. Trippy Blythe led off the inning with a home run over the 350-foot center field fence to make the score 4-0.. Bukac followed with a single and Laitenen and Latiano reached on errors to load the baes. Bill Pratt reached on another error scoring Bukac to up the lead to 5-0. Chesko followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Laitinen to raise the lead to 6-0. Pat White singled in Latiano to increase the lead to 7-0. Two more errors scored Pratt and White to up the lead to 9-0. Ellwood City added two more runs in the sixth inning. Bukac singled and was forced out at second base by Laitinen. Latiano reached on an infield single. Bill Pratt singled to right to score Laitenen to give Ellwood City a 10-0 lead. White singled to center scoring Latiano as the lead ballooned to 11-0. Montour scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the final 11-2 margin. Ellwood City was led at the plate by Latiano with a double and two singles and Bukac  added three singles. Chesko, White and Bill Pratt added two singles apiece. Blythe smacked a home run. Winning pitcher Bob Poholsky scattered eight hits and fanned nine batters for Ellwood City. 


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS MCKEESPORT, 4-1, TO WIN FIRST WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP-POHOLSKY THROWS FIVE-HITTER AT FORBES FIELD


Ellwood City won their first WPIAL Championship with a 4-1 win over McKeesport at Forbes Field. Bob Poholsky hurled a five-hitter for Ellwood City-the first Lawrence County team to win a WPIAL baseball crown. Ellwood City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. John Pratt led off with a single to left field. Tom Blythe singled to right field sending Pratt to third base. A ground out moved Blythe to second base. Toy Laitinen followed with a single down the left field line scoring Pratt and Blythe to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Laitinen stole second base and Bill Pratt walked. Randy Chesko follwed with a double scoring Laitinen increasing Ellwood City's lead to 3-0.  McKeesport scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. Ellwood City added an inurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Laitinen singled to lead off the inning. Bob Latiano forced Laitinen at second base then stole second base. After  a passed ball, Bill Pratt drew a base on balls. Chesko followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to raise the lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jim Bierne doubled but was thrown out at third base attemting to stretch his hit into a triple. McKeesport got a runner on base in the seventh inning but failed to score and Ellwood City captured their WPIAL baseball crown. Winning pitcher Poholsky allowed one run on five its for Ellwood City. Laitinin led Ellwood City with two singles and two RBI. Chesko singled with two RBI. Leon Rutledge singled twice and Bierne doubled for McKeesport.

Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, 10-0,  in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs at New Brighton. Jim Suskiewich fired a no-hitter to lead Beaver Falls on the mound. Henry Rousseau smacked two home runs and Lou Cynkar homered and singled twice at the plate .After two scoreless innings, Beaver Falls scored a solo run in the top of the third inning. An error, a wild pitch and an RBI-single by Don Ammon gave Beaver Falls a 1-0 lead. Beaver Falls added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bill Mentz reached on an error and Cynkar homered to give Beaver Falls a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Rousseau hit a solo homer to up the lead to 4-0. In the top of the sixth inning Beaver Falls scored four more runs. Mentz and Don Barnett reached on singles. Cynkar singled in Mentz to raise  the lead to 5-0. After a fielder's choice, Rousseau belted a long three-run homer to increase the lead to 8-0. In the seventh inning three errors, a wild pitch and a single by Cynkar scored two runs to account for the 10-0 final score. Winning pitcher Suskiewich fanned 14 batters in his one-hit performance for Beaver Falls. Rousseau hit two home runs with four RBI. Cynkar homered, singled twice and drove in four runs. Ammon added two singles.

Ellwood City won the Section 6 title and finished with an overall mark of 20-2. Ellwood City started the season with 18 straight wins. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman. were 9-1 in section play. Rochester edged Ellwood City, 2-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs.


 ROCHESTER EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 2-1, IN WPIAL PLAYOFF OPENING ROUND BEHIND STIMPSON, HOFFMEIER


Rochester edged Ellwood City, 2-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Beaver Falls. TIm Stimpson struck out 16 batters and Bill Hoffmeier hit a two-run homer to lead Rochester. Ellwood City threatened to take the in the bottom of the first inning. Sonny Kolik singled to left field and Leroy Turner drew a base on balls. Kolik moved to third base on a passed ball. Turner stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. Stimpson ended the threat with two strikeouts. After a scoreless second inning, Rochester took the lead in the top of the third inning. Gary Miller singled and Hoffmeier hit a two-run homer over the 315-foot centerfield fence to give Rochester a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City threatened to tie the score in the bottom of the  seventh inning. With one out, Mike Laitinen doubled down the left field line. Bob Schuster followed with a single scoring Laitenen to cut the deficit to 2-1.  But Rochester got two ground outs to end the threat and the game. Winning pitcher Stimpson threw a five-hitter in his 16-strikeout effort. John Sharek hurled a five-hitter for Ellwood City. Hoffmeier led Rochester with a home run and two RBI. John Meier added two singles. Laitenen led Ellwood City with a double.

Ellwood City captured the Section 6 championship. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, were 9-1 in section play. Ellwood City defeated Riverside and Center in the first two rounds of the WPIAL Playoffs. Kiski Area defeated Ellwood City in the semi-finals. The Wolverines ended 19-5 overall.

   

 ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS RIVERSIDE, 3-0, IN EXTRA INNINGS IN WPIAL PLAYOFF OPENER BEFORE OVER 2,000 FANS-BARTOLMEO THROWS ONE-HITTER


Ellwood City downed Riverside, 3-0, in extra innings in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs before over 2,000 fans at Ewing Park Field. Rich Bartolomeo hurled a one-hit shutout to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City threatened in the first by loading the bases with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat. Ellwood City stranded 13 batters throughout the first seven innings.  Ellwood City broke the deadlock in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Bartolomeo reached on an error. Pat Pietrandrea followed with a bunt single down the third base line to place runners at first and second base. Jim Potter, after two long fouls. smacked a triple to deep centerfield to score both runners to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Jim DeMark followed with a triple to the left-center field gap to up the lead to 3-0. Riverside went in order in the bottom of the eighth inning. Winning pitcher Bartolomeo allowed just one single in eight innings of work. He fanned nine batters without a walk. Losing pitcher Ray Ott scattered seven hits for Riverside. Potter and DeMark  led Ellwood City at the plate with a triple and single apiece. Tony Santagata, with a single in the fourth inning, was the only baserunner for Riverside. 


ELLWOOD CITY RALLIES PAST CARNEGIE, 3-2, IN WPIAL QUARTER-FINALS-SHAREK PINCH-HIT HOMER TIES GAME IN SIXTH INNING


Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to slip by Center, 3-2, in the WPIAL quarter-finals at Morell Park in  Aliquippa.  Carnegie held at 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning before pinch-hitter John Sharek belted a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. Ellwood City followed with another run to take the lead, 3-2, before closing out the victory in the seventh inning. After a scoreless first inning, Carnegie scored two runs in the top of the second inning.  Joe Popivchak lined a single to lead off the inning and went to second base on a wild pitch. Harry Moehring singled to center to score Popivchak to give Carnegie a 1-0 lead. Mike Kolominsky reached on a bunt single and Jay McIntyre walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Ellwood City second baseman snagged a fly ball over second base for the second out. Ron Scro followed with with an infield single scoring Moehring to up the Carnegie lead to 2-0. Ellwood City catcher Jim Potter picked Scro off first base to end the inning. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Ellwood City  rallied to take the lead. Dave Blazin led off the inning with a single. Pinch-hitter Sharek followed by belting a 1-2 pitch over the 380-foot left-field fence to to the game at 2-2. Pat Pietrandrea followed with a double to right field. Jim DeMark reached on an error sending Pietrandrea to third base. Pete Pietrandrea grounded to short but the attempt at the force was late and DeMark's slide allowed Pat Pietrandrea to score the go-ahead run to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. Carnegie  was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning.  Winning pitcher Rich Bartolomeo allowed six hits in six innings of work. Jerry Bukac threw a hitless inning to gain the save. Mike Cozy threw a four-hitter for Carnegie allowing two unearned runs. Sharek led Ellwood City at the plate with a home run. 


KISKI AREA DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 7-5, IN WPIAL SEMI-FINALS


Kiski Area downed Ellwood City, 7-4, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Kiski Area broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Kiski advanced to the finals and won the WPIAL Championship. Kiski Area scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Joe McCain to take a  1-0 lead. Kiski Area added another run in the second inning. Bill Tress led off with a double to left field. After two strikeouts, Wiggins reached on an infield single and an error on the play allowed Tress to score to up the Kiski Area lead to 2-0. Ellwood City rallied in the top of the third inning to take the lead. Pat Pietrandrea singled and Jim Potter followed with a single. Jim DeMark smacked a long triple to the 367-foot mark scoring both runners to tie the score at 2-2. With two outs, Ray Smith hit a pop fly double scoring Demark to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. Kiski Area scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. With one out, back-to-back singles by McCain and Joe Minik put runners on first and third base. Mikik stole second base to place both runners in scoring position. Jerry Kaldos grounded to short but the throw home was late scoring McCain to tie the score at 3-3. Kaldos stole second base and the throw back to home was late allowing Minik to score to give Kiski Area a 4-3 lead. Ellwood City tied the score in the fifth inning. Pat Pietrandrea walked and Jim Potter reached on an error. DeMark lined a double to right center scoring Pietrandrea to knot the score at 4-4. With runners at first and third base, Ellwood City threatened to take the lead. But a ground out, pop out and strikeout ended the threat. Kiski Area took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Minik reached on an infield single and Kandos reached on an error. Tress followed with a single to right field scoring Minik to give Kiski Area a 5-4 lead. A pick-off throw allowed Kaldos to go to third base. Tress advanced on a wild pitch to put runners on first and second base. After a pop-out and strike out, Wiggins  walked to load the bases. Linkes lined a single to centerfield scoring two runners to increase the Kiski Area lead to 7-4. In the seventh inning, Ellwood City mounted their final threat. Potter walked and was forced out at second base by DeMark. A wild pitch allowed DeMark to take second base. After a pop up, Smith singled in DeMark to cut the deficit to 7-5. A fly out ended the threat and the game. Linkes led Kiski Area with three singles and two RBI. Tress doubled and singled and Wiggins and Minik singled twice.  DeMark led Ellwood City at the plate with a single, double, triple and three RBI. Smith doubled and singled and Andy Flis singled twice. Winning pitcher Tress scattered nine hits for Kiski Area.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS SECOND WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP-FINISHES WITH 27-2 RECORD


Ellwood City won the WPIAL Championship for the second time in school history. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, won the Section 5 title with an 11-0 record. Ellwood City defeated Waynesburg, 1-0, in the WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City ended the season with 27-2.



ELLWOOD CITY RALLIES PAST CENTER, 4-3, IN WPIAL PLAYOFF OPENER-BEHIND THORNHILL


Ellwood City rallied past Center, 4-3,  in the opening game of the WPIAL opening game at New Brighton. Wayne Thornhill drove in all four runs as Ellwood City rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the fifth inning. After a scoreless three innings, Center scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Bruce Harris drew a walk and moved to second base on an error. Dennis Biskup followed with a single scoring Harris to give Center a 1-0 lead. Center added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Ken Wieck reached on a fly ball that was misjudged for a double. Jim Macroglou smacked a long fly that was misjudged for a double scoring Wieck to up the lead to 2-0. Pat D'Eramo singled to left field scorng Macroglo to give Center a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied to knot the score in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Don Wick reached on an error and went to second base on a wild pitch. Doug Adams drew a walk and pinch-hitter Joe Pisano singled to centerfield to load the bases. A pop-up left the bases loaded with two outs. With two strikes, Thornhill belted a fastball off the 385-foot fence in left field to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3. After a scoreless sixth inning,  Center went in order in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the inning, Ellwood City would score the game-winning run. Rick Smith led off with a double to left field. Thornhill followed with a bloop double down the right field line scoring Smith to give Ellwood City the 4-3 victory. Thornhill led Ellwood City with a triple, double and drove in all four runs. Ray Smith singled twice and Rick Smith added a double. Magroglou led Center with a double and single. Wieck added a double. Rich Lawson was the winning pitcher with two innings of perfect relief.  


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS CANON-MCMILLAN, 3-1, IN WPIAL QUARTER-FINALS BEHIND LAWSON, SMITH


Ellwood City downed Canon-McMillan, 3-1, in the WPIAL quarter-finals at Mt. Lebanon. Rich Lawson fired a two-hitter and Ray Smith rapped a home run and drove in all three to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Smith smacked long home run to left-center field to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Rick Smith singled and went third base on a double by Wayne Thornhill. Ray Smith followed with a  ground ball single into left field scoring both runners to up the increase the lead to 3-0. Canon-McMillan tallied an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. Mike Smutney reached base on an error and scored on a two-base error to cut the deficit to 3-1. Lawson sent down Canon-McMillan in order in the top of the seventh inning to seal the victory. Winning pitcher Lawson allowed just two singles and an unearned run. He fanned eight batters without a walk. Ray Smith led Ellwood City with a home run, two singles and three RBI. Thornhill added a double for Ellwood City.  


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS NORTH HILLS, 6-2, IN WPIAL SEMI-FINALS AT FORBES FIELD BEHIND SMITH, BUKAC-ADVANCE TO WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP 


Ellwood City defeated North Hills, 6-2, in the WPIAL Semi-Finals at Forbes Field. With the victory Ellwood City advanced to the WPIAL Championship. Ray Smith added a triple, double and single and Jerry Bukac tossed a five-hitter to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Smith singled for Ellwood City and stole second base. A wild pitch sent Smith to third base. Dave Blazin walked to put runners at first and third base. Blazin took off for second base on the first pitch and the pitcher balked sending Smith home to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, Ellwood City added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Smith doubled to right center field and Blazin was issued an intentional walk. Del Schuster followed with a single scoring Smith to up the Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. North Hills tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. After North Hills loaded the bases, Bob Weider singled scoring two runs to knot the score at 2-2. Ellwood City responded for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Doug Adams led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. With two outs, Rick Smith walked to send runners to first and second base. Wayne Thornhill grounded a single scoring  Adams to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. Ray Smith drew a walk to load the bases. Blazin followed with a high fly that was dropped by the centerfielder to score Rick Smith and Thornhill to raise the lead to 5-2. Ellwood City added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ray Smith smacked a triple with a line drive to the 375-foot mark  in right-center field. Smith scored on a wild pitch to up the lead to 6-2. North Hills failed to score in the seventh inning to send Ellwood City to the finals. Ray Smith led Ellwood City at the plate with a triple, double, single and walk. Winning pitcher Bukac allowed five hits and fanned four batters.    


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS WAYNESBURG, 1-0, TO WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP BEHIND LAWSON THREE-HIT SHUTOUT-ELLWOOD CITY WINS SECOND WPIAL BASEBALL TITLE  


Ellwood City downed Waynesburg, 1-0, to win the WPIAL Championship at West Field in Munhall. Rich Lawson fired a three-hit shutout to lead Ellwood City.  Ellwood City, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, won their second WPIAL baseball title.  Ellwood City broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning to score the game's only run. Ellwood City threatened to score in the first inning. Wayne Thornhill walked and Ray Smith and Del Schuster were hit by pitches to load the bases with two outs. But a infield foul pop up ended the threat. In the fourth inning, Ellwood City threatened again. Schuster reached on a error to lead off the inning and stole second base. Vic Sharek singled to left field placing runners at first and third base. Don Wick followed with a bouncer to Waynesburg third baseman Dave Gusic who tossed to catcher Joe Watson who retired Schuster for the first out. Doug Adams followed with a fly to right. With Sharek running on the play, right fielder Bob Moore made the catch and fired to second baseman Bill DeWeese to end the inning with a double play. Ellwood City finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Rick Smith drew a base on balls. Thornhill singled to left field and Ray Smith walked to load the bases. Dave Blazin followed with a ground ball over the mound that was deflected by pitcher Karl King. Second baseman DeWeese made an outstanding play to throw out Blazin at first base while lying on his back. Rick Smith scored on the play to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Waynesburg threatened to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Jeff Cree doubled to right center and continued on to third base when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. Lawson ended the threat with a pop up to second baseman Rick Smith to end the inning. Waynesburg mounded their final challenge in the bottom of the seventh inning. Moore led off the inning with an infield single off of Lawson. Watson forced out at Moore at second base for the first out. Watson stole second base to place the tying run in scoring position. Lawson fanned the next batter on a 2-2 swing and miss  to put Ellwood City one out away from the title. Lawson, facing pinch-hitter Bill Hook, fell behind on the count, 3-0, before delivering two strikes. Hook followed with a line drive to center field. Centerfielder Adams got a quick jump on the ball and made the catch to seal the victory and the WPIAL crown. Winning pitcher Lawson threw a three-hitter and fanned five-batters for Ellwood City. Karl King twirled a four-hitter for Waynesburg. Ray Smith led Ellwood City with a single, walk and being-hit-by a pitch. Cree doubled to lead Waynesburg.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP-LOGS 25-4 MARK


Ellwood City ended the season with a 25-4 record. The Wolverines, under Bill Spellman, had a 10-3 exhibition record and a 14-0 record  in section play to win the Section 6 crown. Ellwood City lost to WPIAL champion Beaver Falls, 5-4, in exhibition play.



ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS CENTER, 9-0, IN WPIAL OPENING ROUND GAME BEHIND LAWSON


Ellwood City defeated Center, 9-0, in the opening game of the WPIAL Playoffs at Beaver Falls. Rich Lawson tossed a four-hit shutout and was supported by a 12-hit offensive attack.  Ellwood City. After Center failed to score in the top of the first inning, Ellwood City rallied for two runs. Rick Smith led off the inning with an infield single. After a strikeout, Wayne Thornhill drew a base on balls. Rich Potter singled to left field scoring Smith to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Both runners moved into scoring position on the play. Vic Sharek hit a sacrifice fly left field to score Thornhill to up the lead to 2-0. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Rick Coughlin drilled a triple to center field. Chuck Nardone slapped a single into left field to score Coughlin to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-0. Ellwood City added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lawson reached on an error and scored on a booming triple by Pete Sheeler to increase the Ellwood City lead to 4-0. After a strikeout, Rich Potter followed with a base on balls. Potter stole second base and on the throw and Sheeler scored from third base to raise the lead to 5-0. Ellwood City put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs. Nardone led off with a double down the left field line. Nardone advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Dave Bender's single to give Ellwood City a 6-0 lead. After a strikeout, Smith walked to put runners on first and second base. Sheeler singled scoring Bender to raise the lead to 7-0. An error on the play allowed Smith to score to up the lead to 8-0. With Sheeler at second base, Thornhill singled to score Sheeler to account for the final 9-0 margin. Winning pitcher Lawson allowed four singles and fanned eight batters. Sheeler led Ellwood City with a triple and a single. Nardone added a double and a single. Thornhill and Bender rapped two singles apiece and Coughlin added a triple.


CANON-MCMILLAN DROPS ELLWOOD CITY, 5-0, IN WPIAL QUARTER FINALS BEHIND CALDWELL 


Canon-McMillan defeated Ellwood City, 5-0, in the WPIAL Quarter-Finals at Mt. Lebanon. Don Caldwell tossed a five-hitter in a game shortened to six innings because of rain. After a scoreless first inning, Canon McMillan scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. After a strikeout, Mike Smutney singled into left field. Tom Corcoran reached on an error to put runners at first and second base. Don O'Hare followed with a triple to center field scoring both runners to give Canon-McMillan a 2-0 lead. Caldwell followed with a single to score O'Hare to up the lead to 3-0. Canon-McMillan added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Doug Kotar singled sharply to right field and stole second base. Kotar was trapped off second base on a ground ball but  jarred the ball loose in a collision to reach third base. A fielder's choice that failed to retire Kotar at third base laoded the bases. Corcoran followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Kotar to up the Canon-McMillan lead to 4-0. Canon-McMillan scored another run in the botom of the fifth inning. Ed Plopa lead off the inning with a single. Kotar singled to right field and a two-base error allowed Plopa to score to increase the lead to 5-0. After Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the sixth inning, Canon-McMillan got two runners on base before a downpour caused the umpires to call the game. Winning pitcher Caldwell scattered five hits and fanned five batters in six innings of work. Tony Joseph fanned five batters in 2-2/3 innings of relief for Ellwood City. Kotar led Canon-McMillan with two singles. O'Hare tripled with two RBI. Pete Sheeler doubled and singled and Rich Potter doubled for Ellwood City.

ELLWOOD CITY REGISTERS 24-7 RECORD-WINS SECTION 5 TITLE-REACHES WPIAL SEMI-FINALS


Ellwood City registered a 24-7 record for the season. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, recorded a 12-3 exhibition mark and  9-3 record in section play to tie Ambridge as co-champions. Ellwood City defeated Ambridge, 8-2, to advance to the WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City reached the WPIAL Semi-Finals round.


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES MOHAWK, 1-0, IN BOTTOM OF SEVENTH INNING IN WPIAL OPENING ROUND


Ellwood City edged Mohawk, 1-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Flaherty Field in New Castle. Chuck Nardone scored from second base on an infield error to give Ellwood City the victory. Ellwood City's Dave Tammaro and Mohawk's Ed Hardesty hooked up in a pitcher's duel before a crowd of over 1,000. Ellwood City's Rich Potter smacked a long fly out just short of the 350-foot fence in the second inning which was caught by Gary Glass. Mohawk's Dale Zeh reached third base in the in the third inning but was stranded there. In the seventh inning, Mohawk threatened to break the scoreless deadlock. Tammaro retired the first two batters of the inning on a comeback bouncer to the mound and a deep drive by Jetty Gagliano that was snagged by centerfielder Chuck Nardone. Gary Retone singled to left field and Hardesty lined a single to centerfield. Rich Lawson relieved Tammaro and walked Dale Zeh to load the bases. The next batter hit a foul pop-up that third baseman Bob Botte caught in front of the Ellwood City dugout to end the threat. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ellwood City rallied to score the winning run. Nardone led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base by Rich Coughlin. A ground out sent Nardone to third base with two outs. Tony Pertile grounded to shortstop and the throw bounced and was not caught at first base scoring Nardone to give Ellwood City the 1-0 victory. Tammaro allowed four hits and fanned five batters in 6-2/3 inninings for Ellwood City. Lawson picked up the victory with 1/3 innings of relief. Hardesty allowed just three singles and one unearned run in 6-2/3 innings. Brian Conti, Nardone and Pertile singled for Ellwood City. Gagliano led Mohawk with a double. Glass, Retone and Hardesty added singles.

Ellwood City downed Valley, 6-2,  in the WPIAL Quarter-Finals at Shaler. Rick Coughlin tripled and doubled, Chuck Nardone singled twice and walked and and Rich Lawson allowed just one earned run to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally. Chuck Nardone singled to left field and Coughlin followed with a line drive that bounced over the fence for a book rule double. Rich Potter was walked intentionally to load the bases. Tony Pertile followed with a single scoring Nardone and Coughlin to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Valley responded with a run in the top of the second inning. Ray Tocco singled and moved up to second base. Jeff Averso followed with a single scoring Tocco to slice the deficit to 2-1. In the bottom of the third inning, Ellwood City added two more runs. Nardone led off with a walk and Coughlin followed with a triple to deep center field to score Nardone to up the lead to 3-1. Potter hit a sacrifice fly scoring Coughlin to increase the lead to 4-1. After a scoreless fourth inning, Valley added a solo run in the top of the fifth inning. Keith Serene lead of the inning with a single to deep short. Larry Barbiaux singled down the right field line and Serene scored when the ball eluded the outfielder to cut the deficit to 4-2. With Barbiaux heading toward the plate, second baseman Coughlin caught the relay and fired to catcher Potter  to retire Barbiaux at the plate. Ellwood City scored a run in their half of the inning. Wayne Thornhill drew a base on balls to lead off the inning. Thornhill stole second base and scored on Nardone's single to right field to up the lead to 5-2. Ellwood City added their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bob Botte walked and stole second base. Brian Conti followed with a single scoring Botte to raise the lead to 6-2. Lawson retired Valley in order to seal the victory. Coughlin led Ellwood City at the plate with a triple, double and two runs scored. Nardone singled twice, walked and scored twice. Barbiaux and Tocco singled twice to lead Valley. Winning pitcher Lawson scattered nine hits, fanned seven batters and allowed one earned run.


BETHEL PARK DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 3-0, IN WPIAL SEMI-FINALS BEHIND PURKEY, BALMFORD 


Bethel Park defeated Ellwood City, 3-0, in the WPIAL Semi-Finals at Montour. Bob Purkey scattered seven hits and Craig Balmord rapped three hits to lead Bethel Park. After a scoreless first inning, Bethel Park scored in the top of the second inning. Dave Gaab smacked a double and scored with two outs on a single by Andy Glenn to give Bethel Park a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City threatened in the bottom of the inning. Rick Coughlin singled to lead off the inning. Rich Potter followed with a base on balls. Purkey retired the next three batters to end the threat. Bethel Park added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Purkey walked to lead off the inning. Balmford followed with a triple on an 0-2 pitch to score Purkey to up the Bethel Park lead to 2-0. Fran Kail followed with a single scoring Balmford to increase the lead to 3-0. Ellwood City again threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Coughlin singled to left field to lead off the inning. Potter singled on the next pitch to put runners at first and second base. But a force out, strike out and fly out ended Ellwood City's final threat. Winning pitcher Purkey struck out five in his seven-hit shutout. Rich Lawson allowed one hit in five shutout innings of relief. Balmford led Bethel Park with a triple and two singles. Gaab added a double for Bethel Park. Coughlin and Potter led Ellwood City with two singles apiece.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS SECTION-REACHES WPIAL FINAL AT THREE RIVERS STADIUM-LOGS 30-7 RECORD


Ellwood City won the Section 5 Championship. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Bill Spellman, reached the WPIAL Championship at Three Rivers Stadium. Ellwood City was 30-7 overall and 9-3 in section play.


 ELLWOOD CITY DROPS NEW BRIGHTON, 7-1, IN OPENING GAME OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS BEHIND POTTER


Ellwood City defeated New Brighton, 7-1, in the opening game of the WPIAL Playoffs at Beaver. Jeff Potter twirled a three-hitter to lead Ellwood City. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Ed Prence led off with a single and John Kish drew a base on balls. With one out, John Huffman doubled to the right center to score Prence to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Phil Lagana singled scoring Kish and Huffman to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the third inning New Brighton scored a single tally with two outs. Randy Lake walked and Dale DeLizio tripled to cut the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Huffman and Lagana reached on errors. Kim Foley followed with a walk to load the bases. Jim Ferruchie followed with a triple down the left field line to raise the Ellwood City lead to 6-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City added one more run. Rich Herman singled and was pinch-run for by Skip Docchio. Huffman and Lagana singled to load the bases. Kim Foley followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Docchio to account for the final 7-1 margin. Winning pitcher Potter allowed three singles and fanned eight batters. Huffman led Ellwood City with a double, single and one RBI. Lagana singled twice with two RBI. Ferruchie added a triple with three RBI. DeLizio tripled to lead New Brighton.


ELLWOOD CITY TRIMS FRAZIER, 6-2, IN WPIAL QUARTER-FINALS BEHIND MAINE, LAGANA 


Ellwood City defeated Frazier, 6-2, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at Chartiers-Houston. Bob Maine hurled a five-hitter and Phil Lagana tripled and singled for Ellwood City.After a scoreless first inning Ellwood City took the lead in the second inning. Ed Prence led off with a single. Prence went to second base on a passed ball and to third base on a ground out. After John Huffman walked, Ellwood City pulled a double steal with Prence scoring to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. With Huffman at second base, Maine followed with a single scoring Huffman to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City added an unearned run in the third inning. Kim Foley was safe on an error and stole second base. With two outs, Jeff Potter reached on an error scoring Foley to up the lead to 3-0. Ellwood City scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Rich Herman led off the inning with a double to left field. Huffman singled to right field to score Herman to up the lead to 4-0. Maine singled Huffman to third base and Phil Lagana singled in Huffman to raise the lead to 5-0. Frazier narrowed the lead to with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Scott Howser singled and went to third base on a ground rule double by Dan Kordich. Chuck Henderson followed with a double scoring both runners to reduce the deficit to 5-2. Ellwood City  addedan insurance run in the sixth inning. Herman reached on an error and was pinch-run for by Joe Mancini. Lagana followed with a triple scoring Mancini to up the lead to 6-2. Winning pitcher Maine fanned nine batters without a walk in a complete-game effort. Lagana led Ellwood City with a triple and single. Maine and Ed Prence singled twice and Herman added a double. Jim Brandt singled twice to lead Frazier. Henderson doubled two RBI and Kordich added a double. 


POTTER HURLS ELLWOOD CITY TO 3-0 WIN OVER WEST MIFFLIN NORTH IN WPIAL SEMI-FINALS-ADVANCE TO FINALS AT THREE RIVERS STADIUM- ELLWOOD CITY SNAPS WEST MIFFLIN NORTH'S 24-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK-KISH RAPS THREE HITS 


Ellwood City, behind the three-hit pitching of Jeff Potter, shutout West Mifflin North, 3-0, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at Hopewell. The victory advanced Ellwood City to the WPIAL Championship at Three Rivers Stadium-the first  to be held at the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ellwood City also snapped West Mifflin North's 24-game unbeaten streak. John Kish led Ellwood City at the plate with three hits. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City took the lead in the top of the second inning. Potter reached base on an infield hit. With one out, Potter broke for second base on a steal attempt and John Kish followed with a single to center field. The attempt throw Potter out at third base was was overthrown allowing Potter to score to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Rich Herman followed with an RBI-double scoring Kish to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. After two scoreless innings,  Ellwood City added another run in the fifth inning. With one out, Jim Ferruchie looped a double to right field.  After a strikeout, Potter singled  to right field scoring Ferruchie to up the lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the inning, West Mifflin North attempted a two-out rally.  Dean Palotta  singled and stole second base. Rick Mehn followed with a broken-bat single to center field. But Ellwood City centerfielder Kish fired a throw to catcher Herman at the plate to nail Palotta. In the sixth inning, West Mifflin North had the leadoff runner reach on an error. But a double play erased the threat. Potter retired West Mifflin North in order in the seventh inning.  Winning pitcher Potter fanned nine batters on the way to the three-hit shutout. Kish led Ellwood City at the plate with three singles. Ferruchie doubled and singled and Potter singled twice. 


HIGHLANDS EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 5-4,TO WIN THE WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP-FIRST WPIAL GAME EVER PLAYED AT THREE RIVERS STADIUM


Highlands edged Ellwood City, 5-4, to win the WPIAL Championship  at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. The game marked the first WPIAL game ever played at the one-year old stadium. Highlands held off an Ellwood City rally with the tying run at second base and the winning run at first base in the last inning. With the victory, Highlands ended the season at 19-1. Ellwood City ended the season with a 30-7 ledger. Highlands opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on an unearned run to take the lead. Mickey Kolwicz singled to left field to start the game. Greg Cielinski reached base on an error on a sacrifice bunt to place runners at first and second base. After a force out at second base, Ed Kush hit a high chop over the mound to force Cielinski at second base scoring Kolowicz to give Highlands a 1-0 lead. Wolverine pitcher Jeff Potter fanned the next batter to end the inning. Ellwood City threatened in the bottom of the first inning. Phil Lagana walked to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Kim Foley lined a ball off pitcher Doug Bubash and was retired at first base. Jim Ferruchie followed with a shallow fly that right fielder Dave Sokolowski caught and fired to catcher Kush to nail Lagana for an inning-ending double play. Potter retired the next nine Highland batters in order before Ellwood City rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. Ferruchie lead off with a single inside the first base line. Tony Pertile smacked the next pitch into left field to put runners at first and second base. Potter followed with a sacrifice bunt moving both runners into scoring position. After two outs, Rich Herman singled into left field scoring both runners to give Elwood City a 2-1 lead. Highlands responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bubash led off with a single to deep short. Sokolowski bunted and a two-base error placed both runners in scoring position. On a missed bunt attempt, Ellwood City had Bubash in a rundown but he escaped on a disputed call. Potter fanned the next two batters but Kolwicz singled to center scoring both runners to give Highlands a 3-2 lead. In the sixth inning, Highlands' Kush belted a long fly that Ellwood City centerfielder John Kish caught over his shoulder for the defensive play of the game. After a scoreless sixth inning, Highlands added two more runs in the seventh inning. Ken Gourley reached on a slow roller in the infield to lead off the inning. An error on a  pickoff attempt sent Gourley to third base. Bubash followed with a sinking liner that just eluded leftfielder Pertile for a triple scoring Gourley to increase the Highlands lead to 4-2. Sokolowski hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Bubash to raise the lead to 5-2. Ellwood City mounted a furious threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. John Huffman walked and was pinch-run for by Joe Mancini. Phil Lagana singled to right field sending Mancini to third base and Lagana  to second base on the throw to third base. Kim Foley hit a long  sacrifice fly scoring Mancini to cut the deficit to 5-3. The attempt to get Lagana at third base was overthrown and Lagana scored to slice the lead to 5-4. Ferruchie drew a base on balls and Pertile singled to center to place runners at first and second base. But Bubash fanned the final twoto end the game.  Winning pitcher Bubash scattered seven hits and fanned eight batters for Highlands. Losing pitcher Potter allowed five hits and two earned runs. Potter struck out seven batters without a walk. Bubash led Highlands at the plate with a triple and a single.  Kolwicz had two singles and two RBI. Pertile and Lagana had two singles for Ellwood City. Highlands ended the season at 19-1. Ellwood City finished at 30-7.

UNION RALLIES PAST ELLWOOD CITY, 5-3, IN OPENING GAME OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS


Union rallied past Ellwood City, 5-3, in the opening game of the WPIAL Playoffs at Flaherty Field in New Castle. Union erased a 3-0 deficit in on the way to the victory. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the top of the second inning. Tony Pallagallo led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Dan Veres reached on an error and Ed Smith walked to load the bases. Jeff Conte singled to right field scoring Pallagallo to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Marty Sberna followed with a single to left field scoring Veres and Smith to up the lead to 3-0. On the next play, a force out at second base retired Sberna but the throw to first base was high. Conte, attempting to score from second base, was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Jim Diamond. Union scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Bryan Piccari singled and Bob Burkes drew a base on balls. Diamond's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Kevin Guinaugh's infield single scored Piccari to narrow the deficit to 3-1. Ellwood City threatened in the fourth inning. John Perry led off the inning with a single. With two outs, Conte singed Perry to second base. Sberna followed with a single up the middle that was knocked down on a great play by shortstop Guingaugh to stop Perry from scoring which left the bases full. But a ground out ended the inning. In the fourth inning, Union's Bob Burkes singled with one out. Diamond followed with a line drive that was snagged on a leaping play by second baseman Conte and turned into a double play. Union scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score. Guinaugh singled and went to third base on a single by Jay Waskin. After a pop up, Alan Burkes walked to load the bases. Scott Burkes followed with ground ball up the middle. Ellwood City got the force at second base but the throw to finish the double play was errant allowing Guinaugh and Waskin to score to tie the game at 3-3. Union scored two runs when an errant throw on a potential inning-ending double play allowed two runs to score to tie the game at 3-3. Union broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Burkes walked and Diamond was hit by a pitch.  Guinaugh was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. A force play at the plate retired Burkes for the second out. Chris Schweikert followed with a single between short and third scoring Diamond and Guinaugh to give Union a 5-3 lead. Ellwood City mounted a final threat in the top of theseventh inning. Conte led off with a single. After a force out and a fly out, Tony Morini ripped a hard grounder of Diamond at first base. The ball  caromed to second baseman Bob Burkes who fired to Diamond at first base to end the game. Winning pitcher Frank Gurgacz scattered seven hits and fanned five batters for Union. Guinaugh singled twice  to lead Union at the plate. Conte led Ellwood City with  three hits. Sberna added two singles.

ELLWOOD CITY COMPILES 12-9 MARK-GAINS PLAYOFF SPOT


Ellwood City completed the season with a 12-9 overall record. Ellwood City logged a 2-3 record in exhibition play. The Wolverines were 10-6 in section play and finished in second place. Butler captured the Section 5 crown. 


SHALER DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 11-3, IN OPENING GAME OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS


Shaler downed Ellwood City, 11-3, in the opening game of the WPIAL Playoffs at Flaherty Field in New Castle. After two scoreless innings,  the game was called due to rain and postponed till the next day. When the game was resumed, Shaler scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead. Shaler loaded the bases with three singles. Tim Gralewski followed with a double scoring all three runners to give Shaler a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning Shaler struck for five more runs. A sacrifice fly increased the lead to 4-0. With the bases loaded, a dropped fly allowed three more runs to score to up the Shaler lead to 7-0. Another tally gave Shaler an 8-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kevin Dimeo smacked a double and scored on a single by John Staff to cut the deficit to 8-1. Bill Garroway followed with a single sending Staph to third base. Bill Chapman followed with a double scoring both runners to reduce the deficit to 8-3. Shaler responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to increase the final margin to 11-3. Gralewski led Shaler with a double, two singles and three RBI. Steve Schramm added two singles. Bill Chapman led Ellwood City with a double, single and two RBI. Winning pitcher Sam Ireland fanned 10 batters for Shaler.

ELLWOOD CITY  SHARES SECTION TITLE WITH  BLACKHAWK, HOPEWELL AND BEAVER FALLS-LOGS 11-9 SEASON


Ellwood City won a share of the Section 6 with a 7-5 record. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, shared the crown with Blackhawk, Hopewell and Beaver Falls. Ellwood City registered an 11-9 record overall. 


BLACKHAWK DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 7-2, IN OPENING ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS BEHIND CAROTHERS


Blackhawk downed Ellwood City, 7-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Flaherty Field. Dale Carothers scattered six hits on the mound and doubled and singled at the plate to lead to lead Blackhawk. Ellwood City took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Mike Pelloni led off the game with a double to center field. Brad Welsh sacrificed Pelloni to third base. Erik Montozzi followed with an infield single scoring Pelloni to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Blackhawk took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Dan McNees walked and Steve Dickinson followed with a single to left field. Carothers followed with a two-run double to give Blackhawk a 2-1 lead. After a scoreless second inning, Ellwood City knotted the score in the top of the third inning. Welsh smashed a triple to deep right field and scored on an error to even the score at 2-2. Blackhawk retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on Tim Shanor's sacrifice fly to give Blackhawk a 3-2 lead. Blackhawk extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. McNees doubled and Ben Fetter followed with a two-run home run to left field to give Blackhawk a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Blackhawk added two insurance runs. With the bases loaded, Dickinson smacked a two-run single to up the Blackhawk lead to 7-2. Winning pitcher Carothers scattered six hits and fanned four for Blackhawk. Carothers led Blackhawk with a double and single and two RBI. Dickinson singled twice with two RBI and Fetter homered with two RBI. McNees added a double. Welsh led Ellwood City with a triple and Pelloni added a double. Montozzi, Blake Schilling, Josh Murphy and Eric Meyer added singles.

ELLWOOD CITY LOGS 16-6 RECORD-WINS SECTION 6 CROWN-ENDS YEAR AS #5-RANKED  AAA TEAM BY PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE 


Ellwood City won the Section 6-AA title. record in exhibition play. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, won the Section 6 title with a 10-2 record. Blackhawk finished as league runner-up. Ellwood City ended the year ranked as the #5 team in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette AAA rankings. 


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS PLUM, 4-2, IN WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS BEHIND HALL, PELLONI-FIRST PLAYOFF WIN SINCE 1971


Ellwood City defeated Plum, 4-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Pullman Park. Mike Hall fired a three-hitter and Mike Pelloni homered and singled to lead Ellwood City. The win was the first playoff win since 1971. Ellwood City stormed out of the gate with four runs in the first inning. Pelloni led off the game with a home run over the 370-foot left field fence to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Brad Welsh followed with a single and Josh Murphy smacked a triple to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Joe Nardone followed with a single scoring Murphy to increase the lead to 3-0. Nardone stole second base  and advanced to third on an errant throw. Sam Pelloni followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Nardone to up the Ellwood City lead to 4-0. 

Hall threw four perfect innings as Ellwood City maintained their 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Scott Umberger broke up the perfect game with a walk to lead off the inning. Todd Markowski singled to center field and Umberger scored when the ball caromed away from the fielder to cut the Plum deficit to 4-1. With two outs, Adam Chelli walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Chris Stanley followed with a single to left field and Markowski scored to narrow the lead to 4-2. Chelli attempted to score but leftfielder Welsh fired to catcher Mike Pelloni at home plate to erase Chelli to end  the inning. Plum threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out a single and an error put the tying runs on base. But Hall fanned the next batter and got a force out to end the threat and the game. Winning pitcher Hall scattered three singles on the way to the victory. Pelloni led Ellwood City at the plate with a home run, single and RBI. Blake Schilling doubled and singled and Mike Frisk singled twice. Murphy added a triple and RBI. Welsh, Joe Nardone and Tom Nulph added singles.     


SENECA VALLEY PULLS AWAY FROM ELLWOOD CITY, 13-1, BEHIND FELT IN WPIAL AAA QUARTER-FINALS AFTER RAIN SUSPENSION


Seneca Valley defeated Ellwood City, 13-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Flaherty Field. Seneca Valley led 4-0 before rain suspended play and play had to be resumed the next day. Seneca Valley led 5-1, behind Tony Felt's two home runs and four RBI, before pulling away with eight runs in the seventh inning. 

Seneca Valley was the eventual Pennsylvania AAA state champion and finished ranked 16th in the final USA Today national ratings. Ellwood City also dropped a 4-3 decision to Seneca Valley earlier in the season. Seneca Valley scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Pinch runner Chuck Hein was singled to second base by Matt Kohler. Tony Felt followed with a line drive to the base of the light standard in center field scoring Hein to give Seneca Valley a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City's outfielder raised his hand to signal a ground-rule double as Kohler and Felt rounded the bases. However the umpire ruled that the ball was playable and Felt was awarded an inside-the -park home run. After an error, Shon Norris doubled scoring Matt Koger to up the lead to 4-0. After two scoreless innings, the rain caused the suspension of play until the next day. 

The score remained 4-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Felt hit a long drive over the left field fence to increase the Seneca Valley lead to 5-0. Mike Pelloni got Ellwood City on the scoreboard with a solo home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 5-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Seneca Valley sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs to expand their lead to 13-1. Felt led Seneca Valley at the plate with two home runs and four RBI. Matt Koger singled twice with two RBI and Ruby singled twice with an RBI. Raithel doubled with three RBI and Norris doubled with an RBI. Pelloni led Ellwood City with a home run and Mike Hall added a single.

Starting pitcher Brent Ruby picked up the win for Seneca Valley. He threw three innings and and fanned five batters before the rain suspension. Todd Raithel picked up the save with four innings of work allowing two hits and one run.

ELLWOOD CITY LOGS 13-6 RECORD-WINS SECTION 6 TITLE-REACHED #1 IN PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE AAA RANKINGS


Ellwood City won the Section 6 crown. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, compiled a 10-2 in section play. Blackhawk finished as league runner-up. Ellwood City, despite being the 58th in enrollment, reached the #1 ranking in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette rankings during the season. Ellwood City finished the season with a 13-6 record overall. 



SHALER DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 9-2, IN QUARTER-FINALS OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS BEHIND WEBER


Shaler downed Ellwood City, 9-2, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Flaherty Field.  Bernie Weber fired a two-hitter to lead Shaler to the victory. Shaler scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and three runs in the bottom of the third inning to open up a 6-0 lead. Shaler scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to up their lead to 7-0. Carl Seidl smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to up the Shaler lead to 9-0. Ellwood City scored twice in the top of the sixth inning. Brad Welsh and Sam Pelloni walked and both runners scored on two consecutive errors to account for the 9-2 final score. Winning pitcher Weber allowed just two singles for Shaler. Seidel led Shaler at the plate with a home run, single and two RBI. Weber doubled and singled and Jim Sadowski and Tom Skeel singled twice with an RBI. Larry Pasquale had the only two singles to lead Ellwood City.

Ellwood City won the Section 6-AA title. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, compiled an  11-4 record in section play. Beaver Falls finished as league runner-up. The Wolverines ended the season with a 14-6 record. 


MONTOUR OUTSLUGS ELLWOOD CITY, 13-10, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS


Montour outslugged Ellwood City, 13-10, in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Todd Priddy rapped three hits and drove in four runs to lead Montour to the victory. Montour batted around the order in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied back with a three-run rally to tie the score at 3-3. Montour again scored three runs in the top of the second to open up a 6-3 lead. Ellwood City responded again with two runs to slice the deficit to 6-5. Montour batted around the order again in the top of the third inning to score five unearned runs to take an 11-5 lead. Montour added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to stretch the lead to 13-5. Ellwood City scored a single run in the fifth inning to reduce the deficit to 13-6. Ellwood City rallied for three more runs in the sixth inning to cut the margin to 13-9. Ellwood City scored a final run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final margin 13-10. 

Mike Hareza was the winning pitcher for Montour with Priddy throwing 4-1/3  innings of relief. Priddy led Montour at the plate with a double, two singles and four RBI. Joe Evans  tripled and singled with three RBI and Andy Barnes tripled and singled with one RBI. Steve Wolata and Matt McClennan singled twice. Travis Loccisano led Ellwood City with two triples and four RBI. Jon Frisk and Aaron Thayer doubled and singled for Ellwood City. Dan Carinci singled and drove in three runs and Nick DeSanzo singled with two RBI.

LWOOD CITY COMPLETES 14-6 SEASON-SHARES SECTION 6 TITLE


Ellwood City won a share of the Section 6 title. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, were co-champions with Beaver with  a 10-5 record. The Wolverines ended with a 14-6 overall record.


FRANKLIN REGIONAL SCORED EIGHT RUNS IN SIXTH INNING TO DOWN ELLWOOD CITY, 13-2, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS


Franklin Regional scored eight runs in the sixth inning to pull away from Ellwood City, 13-2, in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Ellwood City held a 1-0 lead after four innings and trailed 3-2 after five innings before the eight-run outburst. 

After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Rocky Carsele smacked a double into left-field and scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead. Franklin Regional scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. After two walks and two wild pitches, Franklin Regional tied the score at 1-1. After a walk and another wild pitch, Frank Moore followed with a two-run single to give Franklin Regional a 3-1 lead. Ellwood City narrowed the lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. Justin Aquino laced a double down the left field line and Neil Blazin followed with a double to left field scoring Aquino to cut the lead to 3-2. In the top of the sixth inning, Vince Harding smacked a home run over the 370-mark in left-center to give Franklin Regional a 4-2 lead. Mike DiRenzo doubled in a run to up the Franklin Regional lead to 5-2. Two runs scored on errors and two bases-loaded walks increased the lead to 9-2. Harding's sacrifice fly drove in a run and and error scored another run to up the lead to 11-2. Franklin Regional closed the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. 

Winning pitcher Scott LeDuc fired a four-hitter and fanned 11 batters for Franklin Regional. Travis Loccisano allowed two runs over four innings for Ellwood City. Harding homered and singled with two RBI to lead Franklin Regional. DiRenzo doubled and singled with an RBI. Moore singled and drove in three runs. Carsele, Aquino and Blazin led Ellwood City with doubles. Matt Loccisano added a single.

ELLWOOD CITY REGISTERS 9-12 SEASON-RUNNER-UP IN SECTION 6 PLAY


Ellwood City completed the season with a 9-12 overall record. Ellwood City logged a 6-4 record in Section 6 and were runner-up to Shenango. Ellwood City lost to Shenango 5-1 and 14-8. 


SHADY SIDE ACADEMY SCORES IN SEVENTH INNING TO EDGE ELLWOOD CITY, 4-3, IN WPIAL AA PLAYOFF


Shady Side Academy scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Ellwood City, 4-3, in the first round of the WPIAL AA Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Shady Side Academy's Graeme Dunlap on an errant throw scored the winning run to snap a 3-3 tie.

Shady Side Academy scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Aaron Fernstrom singled in Matt Draper to give Shady Side Academy a 1-0 lead. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Matt Loccisano singled up the middle and Santino Riccio reached on a bunt single. The throw to try to retire Riccio sailed into right field placing two runners in scoring position. Loccisano scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 1-1. Ryan Venezie and Neil Blazin drew walks to load the bases. Scott LaPenta was hit by a pitch scoring Riccio to give Ellwood City a 2-1 lead. After an out,   Shady Side Academy turned a double-play to end the inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Shady Side Academy regained the lead. After a error placed a runner on base,  David Gombkoto smacked a two-out, two-run homer over the left-field fence to give Shady Side Academy a 3-2 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, Ellwood City scored a run to tie the score. Riccio singled t center field and moved to second base on an error on the play. Venezie bunted Riccio to third base. Blazin followed with a single scoring  to tie the score at 3-3. After Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the seventh inning, Shady Side Academy scored the game-winner in the bottom of the inning. Dunlap drew a walk and Matt Draper singled Dunlap to second base. Fernstrom followed with a sacrifice bunt that was thrown down the right field scoring Dunlap to give Shady Side Academy the 4-3 victory. Draper led Shady Side Academy with three singles. Gombkoto homered and singled with two RBI. Dave Pettler singled twice and Fernstrom singled with an RBI. Riccio led Ellwood City with two singles. Loccisano and Blazin added singles. Winning pitcher Eli Freidman tossed a four-hitter for Shady Side Academy. Pat Boyle allowed one earned in four innings of work for Ellwood City. Rocky Carsele allowed an unearned run in two innings of work.

ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS THOMAS JEFFERSON, 10-0, IN WPIAL AA PLAYOFFS FIRST ROUND BEHIND BOYLE, CARSELE


Ellwood City defeated Thomas Jefferson, 10-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs at  Chippewa Park. Pat Boyle tossd a six-hitter and Rocky Carsele homered and singled to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City scored runs in every inning on the way to the victory. Ellwood City took the lead in the top of the first inning. Brooks LeViere lead off the game with a walk and was sacrificed to second base by Santino Riccio. LeViere moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Carsele's ground out to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Rick Larkin walked, stole second and third base and scored on a wild throw to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Carsele led off the top of the third inning with a home run over the left field fence to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-0. Ellwood City added another solo tally in the top of the fourth inning. LeViere reached second base on an error and scored on Carsele's single through the middle to increase the lead to 4-0. Ellwood City pulled away in the top of the fourth inning with four more runs. Eric Cortez' RBI-single gave Ellwood City a 5-0 lead and three more runs scored on two wild pitches and and an error to up the lead to 8-0. Ellwood Ciy added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Trevor Barillaro scored on an error and Boyle singled in the tenth run. Thomas Jefferson failed to score in the bottom of the inning and the 10-run rule was invoked to end the game. Winning pitcher Boyle scattered six hits and fanned nine batters in six innings of work for Ellwood City. Carsele led Ellwood City at the plate with a home run, single and three RBI. Mike Sharek and Boyle singled twice and Larkin, Cortez and Mike Sedgwick added singles. Steve Scott, Dave Chapman and Mike Cigana doubled for Thomas Jefferson.


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES BELLE VERNON, 3-2, WITH RUN IN SEVENTH INNING IN WPIAL AA PLAYOFF QUARTER-FINALS


Ellwood City scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Belle Vernon, 3-2, in the WPIAL AA quarter-final round at Chippewa Park. Matt Loccisano scored the winning run on an attempted double steal to break a 2-2 tie. Ellwood City opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Santino Riccio singled, stole second base and scored on an RBI-single by Mike Sedgwick to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Belle Vernon rallied for two runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead. Josh Cramer was hit buy a pitch and Tim Lathan doubled Cramer to third base. Mike Johnston followed with a single scoring both runners to give Belle Vernon a 2-1 lead. Ellwood City knotted the score with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin Ricciuti doubled and Eric Cortez followed with an RBI-double to tie the score at 2-2. Belle Vernon threatened in the top of the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out, But a pop-up and strikeout ended the threat. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ellwood City scored the winning tally to break the 2-2 deadlock. Cortez led off the inning with a single. Loccisano pinch-ran for Cortez and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Brooks LeViere. A wild pitch allowed Loccisano to take third base. Riccio drew a base on balls to place runners at first and third base. On the second pitch to the batter, Riccio broke for second base and stopped midway to the base. The catcher threw to the shortstop who tagged Riccio for the second out. But the shortstop fell down making the play and Loccisano scored ahead of the throw to give Ellwood City the 3-2 victory. 

Winning pitcher Ricciuti fanned seven batters for Ellwood City. Latham allowed three runs for Belle Vernon. Cortez led Ellwood City at the plate with a double and single and one RBI.


WAYNESBURG DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 3-0, IN WPIAL AA SEMI-FINALS BEHIND FRITZ


Lee Fritz twirled a shutout to lead Waynesburg to a 3-0 win over Ellwood City in the semi-finals of the WPIAL AA Playoffs at Beth-Center. Fritz scattered seven hits and was backed by a strong defense in the victory. Waynesburg opened their scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Dan King doubled into the the right field corner to lead off the game. With one out, Fritz singled to left scoring King to give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Waynesburg added to their lead. King singled and Fritz reached on an error. With two outs, Matt Imrich doubled in King and Fritz to increase the lead the lead to 3-0. Ellwood City mounted a serious threat in the top of the seventh inning. After Pat Boyle walked, Rick Larkin singled and Eric Cortez reached on an error to load the bases. But Fritz notched a strikeout and Waynesburg turned a double play to end the threat and the game. Winning pitcher Fritz allowed seven hits and fanned five batters for Waynesburg. Boyle, allowing just one earned run, tossed a five-hitter and struck out 11 batters. King led Waynesburg at the plate with a double and a single. Imrich added a double with two RBI. Santino Riccio and Rocky Carsele singled twice to lead Ellwood City. Larkin, Cortez and Boyle added singles.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS WPIAL AA CHAMPIONSHIP-RECORDS 19-5 SEASON


Ellwood City won the WPIAL AA Championship for the third time in school history. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, won the Section 6-AA title with an 11-1 record and defeated Shady Side Academy, 6-3, to win the WPIAL title. The Wolverines ended the season with a 19-5 record.  


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS BEAVER, 7-1, BEHIND RICCIUTTI, RICCIO IN QUARTER-FINALS OF WPIAL AA PLAYOFFS


Ellwood City downed Beaver, 7-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at Chippewa Park behind the arm of Kevin Ricciuti and the bat of Santino Riccio. Ricciuti fired a four-hitter and Riccio smacked a home run, double and single to lead the Wolverines. Ellwood City took an early lead in the top of he first inning. with two outs, Riccio belted a home run over the left field fence to take a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, Ellwood City added another tally in the to of the third inning. Brooks LeViere reached on an error and Mike Sharek followed with a single. Riccio followed with single scoring LeViere to up the lead to 2-0. Ellwood City sent nine men to the plate in the top of the fourth inning to break the game open. Ricciuti doubled inside the third base line and Eric Cortez drew a base on balls and was pinch-run for by Trevor Barillaro. Jeremy Honsaker doubled to the left field game driving in both runners to increase the Ellwood City lead to 4-0. Rick Larkin reached on an error scoring Honsaker to up the lead to 5-0. LeViere followed with a double that bounced of the left field fence scoring Larkin to raise the lead to 6-0. Sharek followed with a single scoring LeViere as the Wolverines expanded their lead to 7-0. Beaver got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Mike Rousseau to account for the 7-1 final score. 

Winning pitcher Ricciuti threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks. Riccio led Ellwood City at the plate with a home run, double, single and two RBI. Sharek added three singles and an RBI. Ricciuti doubled and singled and Honsaker and LeViere added doubles. Mike MacDonald and Josh Genova added singles. Brad Cochran singled twice and Rousseau homered for Beaver. Jeff Peabody added a double.  


 ELLWOD CITY DOWNS SOUTH PARK, 7-0, BEHIND RICCIUTI TWO-HITTER IN SEMI-FINALS OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS-WOLVERINES ADVANCE TO WPIAL FINALS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1971 


Kevin Ricciuti fired a two-hitter to lead Ellwood City to a 7-0 win over South Park in the semi-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at Chippewa Park. The win advanced Ellwood City to the WPIAL Finals for the first time since 1971. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Eric Cortez singled and courtesy runner Trevor Barillaro took his place at first base. Barillaro advanced to second base and scored on Rick Larkin's single to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Ellwood City added their second run. Brooks LeViere reached on an error and moved to third base on Santino Riccio's single. On an errant throw on a pickoff attempt, LeViere scored to raise Ellwood City's lead to 2-0.  In the fourth inning, Ellwood City pulled away from South Park. Cortez led off with a single and courtesy runner Barillaro went to first base.  Jeremy Honsaker laid down a  sacrifice bunt but the pitcher's throw to first base was errant allowing Barillaro to score to up the lead to 3-0. Larkin laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Honsaker to second base. Mike MacDonald followed with a single scoring Honsaker to raise the lead to 4-0. LeViere walked  and Mike Sharek followed with a bunt which was again thrown away at first base allowing MacDonald to score to increase the lead to 5-0. LeViere scored on a groundout to raise the lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LeViere singled and eventually moved around the base to score on a ground out to account for the 7-0 final score. Winning pitcher Ricciuti allowed two singles and fanned nine batters in his complete game performance. Riccio and Cortez singled twice to lead Ellwood City. Honsaker added a double and LeViere, Sharek, Larkin and MacDonald added singles.     


ELLWOOD CITY BREAKS TIE WITH THREE RUNS IN SEVENTH INNING TO DEFEAT SHADY SIDE ACADEMY, 6-3, TO WIN WPIAL AA TITLE-FIRST WPIAL CROWN SINCE 1962 


Ellwood City scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Shady Side Academy, 6-3, to win the WPIAL AA Championship at Shaler. The title gave the Wolverines their third WPIAL title, the first since 1962. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, rallied to tie the score 3-3 with a run in the sixth inning and then scored three runs in the seventh inning. The win ended Shady Side Academy's 18-game unbeaten streak. Ellwood City opened up a lead in the first inning with two runs. Mike Sharek walked and Santino Riccio singled into the right field gap scoring Sharek to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Riccio went to second base on the throw and scored on Mike Sedgwick's single to center field to up the Ellwood City lead to 2-0. Shady Side Academy tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Gordon led off with a single and Eli Freidman doubled him home to slice the deficit to 2-1. Freidman was picked off second base before Matt Krebs drew a base on balls. Krebs stole second base and scored on John Micyk's to tie the game at 2-2. 

After two scoreless innings, Shady Side Academy grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Jason Zoeller smacked a double and moved to third base on a fly ball. Gordon followed with a

single scoring Zoeller to give Shady Side Academy a 3-3 lead. Ellwood City tied the score with a tally in the top of the sixth inning. Eric Cortez singled and courtesy runner Trevor Barillaro took his place at first base. Josh Genova ripped a ball off of Freidman's on the mound to put runners at first and second base. Jeremy Honsaker followed with a single up the middle scoring Barillaro to tie the score at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh inning the Wolverines would score three runs to secure the title. Sharek led off with a sharp single to center field. After a strikeout, Sedgwick singled to right field with Sharek going to third base and Sedgwick to second base on the throw. Courtesy runner Dave Ottavio went to second base for Sedgwick. Keven Ricciuti hit an 0-2 pitch up the middle scoring Sharek to give Ellwood City a 4-3 lead. Ottavio went to third base and scored on a wild pitch to up the lead to 5-3. Cortez then ripped a single scoring Ricciuti to increase the lead to 6-3. Shady Side got a two-out double by Ric San Doval but a ground out to second ended the game to give Ellwood City the crown.Eight players hit safely for Ellwood City as a part of a 13-hit offensive attack. Riccio, Sedgwick, Ricciuti, Cortez and Honsaker singled twice apiece. Sharek, Larkin and Genova added singles. Zoeller led Shady Side Academy with a double and single and San Doval added two singles. Sedgwick scattered nine hits and  allowed three earned runs in a complete-game effort. Shady Side Academy's Freidman was handed his first loss of the season. 


PHILLIPSBURG-OSCEOLA DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 4-0, IN PIAA AA OPENING ROUND BEHIND FYE FOUR-HITTER


Phillpsburg-Osceola, behind a four-hit shutout by Jaime Fye, defeated Ellwood City, 4-0, in the opening round of the PIAA AA Playoffs at Shaler. Phillipsburg-Osceola scored a single run in the second inning and added two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. After a scoreless first inning, Philipsburg-Osceola scored a run in the top of the second inning. After two strikeouts, Bob Sinclair and Tony Petulla hit singles. Craig Peters reached on an error scoring Sinclair to give Philipsburg-Osceola a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Phillipsburg-Osceola scored two more runs. Dustin Woodring drew a base on balls and stole second base. Josh Potter followed with a single scoring Woodring to up the lead to 2-0. Potter went to second base on the throw and to third base on a fly out. Aaron Levonick reached base on a catcher's interference. An error allowed Potter to score to increase the lead to 3-0. Phillipsburg-Osceola closed the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Peter singled and a sacrifice moved courtesy runner Mike Willis to second base. Chris Husted followed with a two-out single to raise the lead to 4-0. 

Winning pitcher Fye scattered four hits and fanned seven batters. 

Kevin Ricciuti absorbed his first loss after 18 straight wins over two seasons. He allowed nine hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts. Potter led Philipsburg-Osceola with three singles. Sinclair added two singles. Josh Genova led Ellwood City with a double. Mike Sharek, Santino Riccio, Eric Cortez added singles. Ellwood City ended the season with a 19-4 record.

ELLWOOD CITY LOGS 12-5 SEASON-WINS SECTION 6 TITLE


Ellwood City won the Section 6 title for the eighth time in nine years. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, won the section with a 10-2 record. Shenango and Riverside were league runners-up. The Wolverines compiled a 12-5 record overall.  


BURRELL DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 4-1, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AA PLAYOFFS BEHIND D.J. LEWANDOWSKI, TAYLOR


Burrell defeated Ellwood City, 4-1, in the first round of the WPIAL AA Playoffs at Pullman Park. D.J. Lewandowski tossed a four-hitter and Dane Taylor smacked two RBI-doubles to lead Burrell to victory. 

Burrell scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to open an early lead. Burrell scored by benefit of  two errors to take a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City tied the score in the bottom of the frame. Darin Sharek singled and Jeremy Honsaker reached on a fielder's choice retiring Sharek. Honsaker moved to second base on a pickoff throw. With two outs, Dave Ottavio singled in Honsaker to knot the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the third inning, Burrell retook the lead. With a runner on second base, Craig Licata bad-hop single into right field scored Tony Pavlick to give Burrell a 2-1 lead. Ellwood City threatened in the fourth inning. Sharek singled and Honsaker reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up, third baseman Licata caught a hard grounder and threw Sharek out at the plate for the second out. A ground out ended the inning. Burrell added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Taylor double to up their lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Taylor ripped another RBI-double to increase the Burrell lead to 4-1. Ellwood City failed to mount another the rest of the game. Winning pitcher Lewandowski scattered four hits and fanned five batters for Burrell. Kevin Ricciuti allowed three earned runs over 5-2/3 innings for Ellwood City. Tony Cunningham threw 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Taylor led Burrell with two doubles and two RBI. Sharek led Ellwood City with two singles.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS FIRST PIAA TITLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY AND FOURTH WPIAL TITLE 

Ellwood City won its first PIAA State Championship and fourth WPIAL Championship. Ellwood City finished as runners-up to Shenango for the Section 6-AA title with a 8-2 record. Shenango edged Ellwood City, 2-1, and lost 5-1 to Ellwood City in the regular season. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, finished the season with a 21-6 record. 


ELLWOOD CITY  DOWNS BROWNSVILLE, 3-1, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS BEHIND HONSAKER


Ellwood City defeated Brownsville, 3-1, in the first round of the WPIAL layoffs at Burgettstown. The win advanced Ellwood City to the quarterfinals against North Catholic. Jeremy Honsaker drove in two runs and scored another to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Aaron Lillibridge led off with a single to left field. After a walk to Tony Cunningham, Kevin Ricciuti bunted both runners into scoring position. Honsaker followed with a single to left field scoring both runners to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Honsaker singled to right field and moved to third base with two outs. Matt Clark beat on an infield hit scoring Honsaker to give Ellwood City a 3-0 lead. Brownsville scored a sigle run in the fifth inning to narrow the score to 3-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning pitcher Cunningham scattered four hits over 4-2/3 innings with six strikeuts. Ricciuti threw 2-1/3 hitless inning of relief to get the save. Honsaker led Ellwood City with two singles, two runs batted in and a run scored.  


ELLWOOD CITY JUMPS OUT TO 7-0 LEAD-HANGS ON TO DEFEAT NORTH CATHOLIC, 7-5, ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS


Ellwood City jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held on to defeat North Catholic, 7-5, in the WPIAL-AA quarter-finals at Chippewa Park. The win moved Ellwood City into the semi-final round against Yough. Kevin Ricciuti  started on the mound for Ellwood City and threw a scoreless first inning. In the bottom of the inning Aaron Lillibridge doubled and scored on single by Ricciuti to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Honsaker singled to place runners at first and third base. Darin Sharek reached on an infield single to score Ricciuti to up the lead to 2-0. Honsaker scored on the errant throw to first base to raise the lead to 3-0. Mike Fidell followed with a towering home run to left center field to increase the lead to 5-0. With the early lead, Honsaker relieved Ricciuti in the top of the second inning and threw a scoreless frame. Ellwood City added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. With Tony Cunningham and Ricciuti on base, Honsaker drilled a double to right center to score both runners to give Ellwood City a 7-0 lead. North Catholic scored a run in the third inning to narrow the deficit to 7-1. Neither team scored in the next three innings as Ellwood City maintained their 7-1 lead. North Catholic mounted a serious threat to tie the game in  the top of the seventh inning. Two errors contributed to a four-run rally that sliced the Ellwood City lead to 7-5. With the tying run at the plate, Ricciuti returned to the mound and fanned the batter on a called third strike to end the threat and the game. Honsaker with 5-2/3 innings of  five-hit relief picked up the victory. Ricciuti hailed down the save. Fidell homered and singled with two RBI for Ellwood City. Honsaker had a double, single and two RB I and Lillibridge added a double and single. Ricciuti singled twice for Ellwood City. Todd Deloplane doubled, singled and drove in two runs and Matt Meeder smacked two doubles for North Catholic.   


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES YOUGH, 2-1, IN WPIAL-AA SEMI-FINALS BEHIND RICCIUTI'S 3-HITTER-ELLWOOD CITY HEADS TO PNC PARK FOR WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP


Kevin Ricciuti fired a three-hitter to lead Ellwood City over Yough, 2-1, in the WPIAL-AA semi-finals at Shaler. The win propelled Ellwood City to a WPIAL-AA Championship against Blackhawk at PNC Park. Ellwood City took a the lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Aaron Lillibridge led of the game with a walk. Tony Cunningham sacrificed Lillibridge to second base. Ricciuti reached out an infield hit sending Lillibridge to third base. Jeremy Honsaker followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Lillibridge to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the second inning Ellwood City scored another solo tally. With two outs, Jay Cortez drew a base on balls. Nick Mancini pinch-ran for Cortez and moved to third base on an error. Lillibridge followed with an infiled single scoring Mancini to increase the Ellwood City lead to 2-1. Ricciuti threw five scoreless innings till the bottom of the sixth inning. Yough's  Tom Evans led off the inning with a single and was pinch run for by Dan Elder. Tim Sudunov singled to center field and Jim Sullenburger reached on a bunt single to load the bases with none out. A passed ball scored Elder to slice the deficit to 2-1. With the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run at second base, Yough brought their second, third and clean-up hitter to the plate. Ricciuti responded by fanning all three batters to preserve the 2-1 lead. Ricciuti retired Yough in the bottom of the seventh inning to clinch the victory.  Winning pitcher Ricciuti fanned 12 batters and did not allow an earned run. Yough's Evans hurled a two-hitter and allowed one earned run. Lillibridge led Ellwood City with a single, a run batted in and a run scored. Yough finished the year with a record of 20-2. 


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES BLACKHAWK, 3-2, AT PNC PARK TO WIN  WPIAL-AA CHAMPIONSHIP-RICIUTTI KEYS WOLVERINE WIN OVER NATIONALLY-RANKED BLACKHAWK-ELLWOOD CITY WINS 4TH WPIAL IN HISTORY 


Ellwood City edged Blackhawk, 3-2, to win the WPIAL-AA Championship at PNC Park. The victory, under head coach Jeff Fotia,  gave the Wolverines their fourth WPIAL title in school history. Kevin Ricciuti fired a three-hitter, drove in the tying run and scored the eventual winning run to lead the Wolverines over the USA Today's 21st -ranked team. Blackhawk scored a run in the top of the first inning to takean early lead. Sean Conley was hit by a pitch to open the game. Conley moved to second base on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third base by Drew Aniceti. Chris Fisher followed with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Conley to give Blackhawk a 1-0 lead. After two scoreless innings Blackhawk added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Fisher singled and was pinch-runner Sam Kristian and stole second base. Joe Hoey sacrifice bunt advanced Kristian to third base. Robert Jones followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Kristian to up the Blackhawk lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ellwood City rallied for three runs to take the lead. Levon Hudson reached base on an error to start the inning. Lou Nocera pinch-hit and sacrificed Hudson to third base. Aaron Lillibridge followed with a single to left filed scoring Hudson to slice the deficit to 2-1.  Lillibridge advanced to second base on the play at the plate. With two outs, Ricciuti ripped a single into left filed scoring Lillibride to tie the score at 2-2. When the throw to the infield missed the cut-off man, Ricciuti advanced to second base. The catcher attempted to retire Ricciuti at second base but his throw sailed into right center field. Ricciuti advanced to third base and then raced home to score the go-ahead run to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. Ricciuti allowed a single in the sixth inning with one out before retiring the next two batters. In the top of the seventh inning, cheered on by the large Wolverine "Blue Wave" crowd, Ricciuti retired the first two batters. Ricciuti ended the game with three-pitch strikeout-registering 92, 89, 93 miles-per-hour on the PNC Park scoreboard. Winning pitcher Ricciuti held a Blackhawk offense averaging 10-1/2 runs a game to three singles. Blackhawk pitcher Jones also allowed just three singles.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS SHENANGO, 2-0, IN  PIAA PLAYOFF OPENING ROUND BEHIND CUNNINGHAM


Ellwood City downed Shenango, 2-0, in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs at Shaler. Tony Cunningham twirled a four-hitter to lead the Wolverines. Neither team scored through the first three innings. in the bottom of the fourth inning Ellwood City scored the only runs of the game. Cunningham led off the inning with a single and Nick Mancini replaced him the bases as a pinch-runner. Kevin Ricciuti followed with a single sending Cunningham to second base. Jeremy Honsaker followed with a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners into scoring position. Darin Sharek received a walk to load the bases. Mike Fidell followed with a two-run single scoring Mancini  to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Ricciuti was obstructed  rounding third base and was awarded home to up the Ellwood City lead to 2-0. Cunningham shutout Shenango in the final three innings to sew up the win. Winning pitcher Cunningham fanned 10 batters on the way to a four-hit shutout. Adam LaScola tossed a five-hitter and allowed two earned runs for Shenango. Ricciuti singled twice to lead Ellwood City at the plate. Mark Glasser  led Shenango with two singles.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS HICKORY, 3-1, IN EIGHT INNINGS IN PIAA-AA QUARTER-FINALS BEHIND RICCIUTI 


Ellwood City downed Hickory, 3-1, in the eight innings in the PIAA-AA quarterfinals at Chippewa Park. Kevin Ricciuti scattered five hits over eight innings and smacked three hits to lead the Wolverines. Ellwood City took a an early lead with a run in the first inning. with one out, Tony Cunningham looped a single into left filed and stole second base. Ricciuti followed with a single ripped up the middle to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Hickory tied the score in the bottom of the third inning. After singles by Aaron Brest and Craig Osborne, an error on a pickoff attempt scored Brest to knot the score at 1-1. Ellwood City threatened in the top of the sixth inning. Ricciuti doubled off the fence to lead off the inning. After a walk, a force out and two runners caught stealing ended the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hickory mounted a threat of their own. Greg Mentrak singled to lead off the inning. With one out, the Wolverines erred on a double-play attempt placing runners at first and third base. An intentional walk loaded the bases. Ellwood City shortstop Jeremy Honsaker fielded a bouncer  that ran up his arm and fired to the plate to force Mentrak at home plate for the second out. Ricciuti fanned the next batter to force extra innings. Aaron Lillibridge led off the eighth inning with a single to right field. Cunningham followed with a sacrifice sending Lillibridge to second base. Ricciuti followed by receiving an intentional walk. A ground ball moved both runners up into scoring position. With two outs, Darin Sharek followed with an infield single scoring Lillibridge to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. When the throw eluded the first baseman, Ricciuti stormed home from second base to up the lead to 3-1. Ricciuti retired all three batters in the eighth inning to preserve the victory. Winning pitcher Ricciuti fanned 13 batters and did not allow an earned run. Dustin Kulka limited Ellwood City to eight hits and two earned runs. Ricciuti led Ellwood City at the plate with a double, two singles and  an RBI. Mike Fidell added two singles. Mentrak led Hickory with two singles.   


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES BLACKHAWK, 3-2, IN PIAA-AA WEST FINAL TO ADVANCE TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME-RICCIUTI FIRES THREE-HITTER-HONSAKER, SHAREK KEY HITS


Ellwood City edged Blackhawk, 3-2, in the PIAA-AA West Final at Butler's Pullman Park to advance to the state championship. Ellwood City knocked of previously nationally-ranked Blackhawk for the second time in two weeks to advance to the first state championship game in school history. Kevin Ricciuti fired a three-hitter and Jeremy Honsaker and Darin Sharek delivered key hits for the Wolverines. Ellwood City jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Tony Cunningham drew a base on balls. Ricciuti followed with a double into left field to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Nick Mancini pinch ran for Ricciuti and moved to third base on Honsaker's infield single. Sharek followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Mancini to increase the lead to 2-0. Blackhawk responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Sean Conley led off with a double. Conley moved to third base on a sacrifice and scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 2-1. With a runner at third base,  Ricciuti retired the next two batters on a strike out and pop up. After a scoreless innings, Ellwood City scored the eventual game-winning run in the third inning.  After Honsaker doubled to right center field, Sharek smacked a single to left field scoring Honsaker to up the lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning Blackhawk sliced into the Ellwood City lead. Dom Nardone doubled to left field and moved to third base on an error. Conley followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Nardone to redue the lead to 3-2. Ricciuti retired the next two batters to end the threat. In the sixth inning, Joey Hoey led off with a single and moved to second base on a bunt. Ricciuti retired the next two batters to end the inning.  Blackhawk mounted a final threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nardone led off the inning with a walk. Chris Janicki popped a foul sacrifice bunt attempt to the third base dugout. Catcher Jay Cortez leaped from the catcher's box and stretched out to make a tumbling catch to retire Janicki. Ricciuti retired the final two batters to end the game. Winning pitcher Ricciuti  fanned seven batters while holding the powerful Blackhawk lineup to three hits. Blackhawk relief pitcher Robert Jones held Ellwood City one hit in the final 4-1/3 innings. Honsaker led the Wolverines with a double and single. Sharek added a single and sacrifice fly with two RBI. Ricciuti and Levon Hudson added doubles. Conley and Nardone doubled for Blackhawk.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS TAMAQUA, 3-1, TO WIN PIAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP-FIRST IN SCHOOL HISTORY-RICCIUTI HURLS FIVE-HITTER-LILLIBRIDGE'S DOUBLE BREAKS 1-1 TIE IN SIXTH INNING


Ellwood City downed Tamaqua, 3-1, to win the PIAA State Championship at Riverside Stadium in Harrisburg. The victory gave Ellwood City their first state title in school history. Kevin Ricciuti hurled a five-hitter and Aaron Lillibridge singled in the go-ahead run to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, ended the season with a 14-game winning streak. Tamaqua took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Kyle Spotts smacked an infield single of off the left hand of Ricciuti  with one out. Spotts moved to third base on a passed ball and scored an a fielder's choice to give Tamaqua a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines tied the score in the top of the second inning. Mike Fidell looped  a ball into right field for a double. After a walk to Leon Hudson, Matt Clark delivered an RBI-single to right field scoring Fidell to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team scored in the next three innings to keep the game knotted at 1-1. In the top of the sixth inning, the Wolverines would break the deadlock. Pinch-hitter Lou Nocera drew a base on balls and was pinch-run for by Nick Mancini. T.J. Post followed with a walk sending Mancini to second base. Lillibridge followed with a single inside the first base line scoring Mancini with the go-ahead run to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. Ellwood City added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Ricciuti led of the frame with a single. Brett Smith pinch-ran and moved to second base on a wild pitch. When a pickoff attempt at second base was thrown into center, Smith moved to third base. Darin Sharek followed with a sacrifce fly to center field scoring Smith to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Tamaqua mounted a strong threat. With one out, Alex Zukas  drew a base on balls. Spotts followed with sharp single into left field to place the tying runs on base. Caleb Calarco launched a long fly to centerfield that was caught by Levon Hudson for the second out. Chris Wehr followed with a walk to load the bases to place the winning run on first base. Ricciuti ended the threat and the game with a final strikeout to give Ellwood City the state title. Winning pitcher Ricciuti did not allow an earned run while scattering five hits. Fidell led Ellwood City with a double and single. Allen Graver and Spots led Tamaqua with two singles. The Wolverines, the first Lawrence County team to win a state title in 22 years, ended the season with a 21-6 record.

ELLWOOD CITY COMPILES 13-8 SEASON


Ellwood City registered a 13-8 overall record for the season. Ellwood City logged a 5-3 record in exhibition play. The Wolverines were 8-4 in Section 5-AA play with Beaver Falls winning the league title. Beaver Falls defeated Ellwood City, 3-1 and 5-4. Beaver Falls won the WPIAL AA title.


CENTER DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 3-1, BEHIND ROSSI IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS


Center downed Ellwood City, 3-1, in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Neshannock. John Rossi threw a six-hitter to lead Center to the victory. Center opened an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Garrett singled and moved to second on a ground out. J.R. DeWeese followed with a double scoring Garrett to take a 1-0 lead. After three scoreless innings, Ellwood City knotted the score in the top of the fifth inning. Kevin MacDonald walked and and scored on a double by Greg Lynn to tie the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Center rallied for two runs to break the deadlock. Center loaded the bases with one out. Drew Hulme was hit by a pitch forcing in a run to give Center a 2-1 lead. Mike Kupper's  ground out scored another run to increase the Center lead to 3-1. Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the seventh inning. inning pitcher Rossi allowed for six hits and fanned seven batters. Gino Ceriani threw a five-hitter for Ellwood City and allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters. DeWeese led Center with a double and RBI. Lynn led Ellwood City with an RBI-double.

ELLWOOD CITY COMPILES 21-3 RECORD-WINS 5TH WPIAL RECORD IN SCHOOL HISTORY


Ellwood City won the WPIAL AA Championship for the fifth time in school history. registered a 21-3 overall record for the season. The Wolverines, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, were 12-2 in Section 5-AA play and shared the league title with Riverside. Riverside defeated Ellwood City, 1-0, and Ellwood City defeated Riverside, 13-3.


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS BROWNSVILLE, 13-0, IN QUARTER-FINALS OF WPIAL AA PLAYOFFS-KERNS FIRES NO-HITTER, SMACKS TWO DOUBLES, SINGLE


Ellwood City defeated Brownsville, 13-0, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AA Playoffs at Pullman Park. Christian Kerns led Ellwood City on the mound and the plate. Kerns fired a no-hitter and rapped two doubles and a single. Ellwood City jumped out of the gate with three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied for four more runs in the top of the second inning to up the lead to 7-0. Ellwood City scored two more  runs in the top of the third inning as the lead ballooned to 9-0. Ellwood City made the lead 10-0 with a single tally in the fourth inning. Ellwood City closed the scoring with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to account for the 13-0 final score. The 10-run rule was enforced and the game ended  after five innings.Winning pitcher Kerns fanned 10 batters with one walk on the way to his no-hitter. Kerns also led offensively for Ellwood City with two doubles, a single and two RBI. Matt Germanoski tripled and doubled with an RBI. Seth Mley singled twice with two RBI and Zach Mathias singled twice with an RBI. Anthony Carusone singled twice and Greg Lynn, Jared Vetica, Justin Vetica and Matt Morella added singles for Ellwood City.   


ELLWOOD CITY HANGS ON FOR 14-11 WIN OVER SOUTH FAYETTE IN SEMI-FINALS OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS-MEET RIVERSIDE IN WPIAL FINALS


Ellwood City opened up a 9-0 lead after three innings and held on to defeat South Fayette in the semi-finals of the WPIAL Playoffs at North Allegheny. The win propelled Ellwood City into the WPIAL finals against crosstown rival Riverside. Ellwood City scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Ellwood City added another run in the bottom of the second inning to up their lead to 6-0. Ellwood City added three more runs n the bottom of the third inning to increase their lead to 9-0. South Fayette rallied for six runs in the top of the fourth inning to slice the Ellwood City lead to 9-6. South Fayette crept closer with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning o close the deficit to 9-8. In the bottom of the fifth inning Ellwood City tallied a run to up their lead to 10-8. South Fayette scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to crawl back to a one-run deficit at 10-9. Ellwood City responded to rally for four runs to raise their lead to 14-9. South Fayette scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to account for the 14-11 final. Matt Gemanoski led Ellwood City with a triple, single and three RBI. Greg Lynn doubled and singled  with one RBI and Christian Kerns added a double. Anthony Carusone  and Matt Morella singled with an RBI apiece. Zach Mathias added a single. Michael Fetchet tripled and rapped three singles for South Fayette. Winning pitcher Kerns allowed five earned runs in 3-1/3 innings. Carusone picked up the save with 3-2/3 relief allowing two earned runs.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS RIVERSIDE, 9-7, TO WIN WPIAL AA TITLE-FIFTH CROWN IN SCHOOL HISTORY-MATHIAS RAPS THREE HITS   


   Ellwood City downed Riverside, 9-7, to win the WPIAL AA Championship at Consol Energy Field in Washington. Ellwood City, under Head Coach Jeff Fotia, jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings against their crosstown rival. Zach Mathias led Ellwood City with a double and two singles. Ellwood City won its fifth WPIAL crown in school history.


Ellwood City scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Riverside added a tally in their half to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ellwood City erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to increase their lead to 7-1. After Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the third inning, Riverside rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to slice the Ellwood City lead to 7-5. Neither team scored in the fourth inning before Riverside added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to narrow the Ellwood City lead to 7-6.


In the top of the sixth inning Ellwood City extended their lead with a two-run rally. Matt Morella reached on an two-base error. Tanner Walsh pinch-ran for Morella and scored on Mathias RBI-single to up the Ellwood City lead to 8-6. Courtesy runner Tony Joseph ran for Mathias and scored on Seth Mley's double to add an insurance run to  give Ellwood City a 9-6 lead. Riverside mounted a final threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Falk singled and Ian Sutherland drew a base on balls. Blaise McCarty drew a walk to load the bases. Dylan Jones grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Falk to cut the Ellwood City lead to 9-7. With the tying run at second base, second baseman Greg Lynn corralled a pop-up fly into short right field to seal the victory.


Mathias led Ellwood City with a double, two singles and one RBI. Anthony Carusone doubled and single with two RBI and Mley doubled, singled and drove in a run. Lynn singled twice with two RBI and Matt Germanoski and Christian Kerns added singles. Sutherland led Riverside with a double, single and two RBI. McCarty singled twice with an RBI. Falk, Devin Kelosky and Tyler Whitlach added singles.


Kerns was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City. He allowed seven hits and six earned runs in a complete-game effort.  


NORTH STAR SHUTS OUT ELLWOOD CITY, 2-0, IN PIAA AA FIRST ROUND BEHIND RICE'S THREE-HITTER 


North Star shutout Ellwood City in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Brantley Rice fired a three-hitter to lead North Star to the victory. 


Rice and Ellwood City's Christian Kerns hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel. While Rice was holding down the Ellwood City attack, Kerns threw a perfect game through 5-1/3 innings against North Star until Dalton Rice singled with one out in the sixth inning. Ellwood City had runners on third base three times with two outs throughout the first six innings but failed to score a run. In the top of the seventh inning North Star punched through for the only runs of the game. Brantley Rice led off the inning with a single. Tony Strasiser as hit by a pitch to place runners at first and second base. After a sacrifce bunt moved the runners into scoring position, an intentional walk loaded the bases. Derek Mullen followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Rice to give North Star a 1-0 lead. Another walk reloaded the bases before an error scored Strasiser to increase the North Star lead to 2-0. Ellwood City failed to threaten in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

Winning pitcher Rice twirled a three-hitter and struck out seven batters for North Star. Ellwood City's Kerns threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and allowing one earned run.

ELLWOOD CITY COMPILES 14-11 RECORD-REACHES WPIAL-AA SEMIFINALS


Ellwood City registered a 14-11 overall record.  The Wolverines were 7-5 in Section 2-AAA play with Riverside winning the league title. Riverside defeated Ellwood City, 8-1 and 10-0. Riverside won the WPIAL AAA title. 


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS CHARLEROI, 6-2, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS


Ellwood City defeated Charleroi, 6-2, in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Ellwood City scored three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull away from Charleroi.


Winning pitcher Tyler Good allowed three hits over 6-2/3 innings to gain the win for Ellwood City. Reliever Noah Rinker notched the final out. Shane Sedgwick led Ellwood City a the plate with two singles.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS STEEL VALLEY, 7-2, IN QUARTER FINALS WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS BEHIND GOOD


Ellwood City downed Steel Valley, 7-2, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Tyler Good scattered seven hits to lead Ellwood City to the victory. 

Ellwood City stunned Steel Valley with four runs in the top of the  opening frame. Two walks, a hit batsmen and four straight singles  gave Ellwood City a 4-0 lead.  Ellwood City upped their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning  on an RBI-single by Anthony Roth. Steel Valley scored single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Ellwood City lead to 5-2. Ellwood City added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 7-2. Steel Valley failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning. Winning pitcher Good allowed seven hits and two earned runs for Ellwood City. Mitch Frazier and Noah Rinker singled twice with one RBI. Rick Pitrelli added two singles for Ellwood City.


MT. PLEASANT EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 2-1, IN SEMI-FINALS OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS BEHIND MCCORMICK TWO-HITTER


Mt. Pleasant edged Ellwood City, 2-1, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Brandon McCormick fired a two-hitter for Mt. Pleasant. 

Mt. Pleasant held a 2-0 lead after scoring two unearned runs through the first  three innings. Ellwood City cut the Mt. Pleasant lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Max Keally and Rick Pitrelli singled and move into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A ground out scored Keally to reduce the deficit to 2-1. But Ellwood City did not threaten the rest of the way. Winning pitcher McCormick allowed just two hits and one earned run for Mt. Pleasant. Noah Rinker scattered six hits and did not allow an earned run for Ellwood City. Keally and Pitrelli had singled for Ellwood City. 


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS BROWNSVILLE, 5-3, IN WPIAL AAA CONSOLATION GAME

 

Ellwood City scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Brownsville, 5-3, in the WPIAL consolation game at Washington and Jefferson's Ross Park. Ellwood City combined three hits and three errors to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brownsville scored a run in the second inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. Brownsville added another run in the third inning to slice the Ellwood City lead to 4-2. Ellwood City scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-2. Brownsville scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the 5-3 final score. 

Noah Rinker was the winning pitcher in relief for Ellwood City. Rinker did not allow an earned run in 3-2/3 innings and fanned five batters.  Anthony Roth led Ellwood City at the plate with two singles. Devon Hudspath added a double.


SHARPSVILLE BEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 5-2, IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PIAA AAA PLAYOFFS


Sharpsville beat Ellwood City, 5-2, in the first round of the PIAA AAA Playoffs at Slippery Rock University. Sharpsville took advantage of six hit batsman to score five runs in the contest. Sharpsville scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits and two hit batsman to take a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City scored a run in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sharpsville responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to increase their lead to 4-1. ELLWOOD CITY REGISTERS 8-10 RECORD


Ellwood City logged an 8-10 overall record for the season.  The Wolverines were 6-6 in Section 6 play with Hopewell winning the league title. Hopewell defeated Ellwood City, 13-2 and 9-2. 


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES DEER LAKES, 2-1, IN LAST INNING OF FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS 


Ellwood City scored in the  seventh inning to edge Deer Lakes, 2-1, in the first round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Neshannock. Noah Magill scored from third base on a third strike throw to first base to break a 1-1 deadlock. After four scoreless innings, Deer Lakes scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cory Newman drew a base on balls with two outs. Justin Brannagan followed with a double to left field scoring Newman to give Deer Lakes a 1-0 lead. Two more walks loaded the bases before second baseman Brady Welsh made a fine catch on a pop-up to short left field. Ellwood City knotted the score with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Gibbons walked and courtesy runner Zion Bunney took his place at first base. Sam DeCaprio followed with a double to left field scoring Bunney to tie the score at 1-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City scored the game-winning run. Doug Balin opened the inning with a walk. Magill pinch-ran and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Joe Rush bunted and beat the throw to first base. After a strikeout on a pitch in the dirt, the Deer Lakes catcher threw to first base to retire the batter. But Magill broke for the plate and scored to give Ellwood City a 2-1 lead. Deer Lakes threatened with two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the  inning, but a strike out ended the game. Winning pitcher Ryan Gibbons allowed three hits over 6-1/3 innings. Ryan Hampton and Zach Polojac relieved in the seventh inning. Polojac notched the save. Greg Geis tossed a five-hitter for Deer Lakes with six strikeouts. DiCaprio led Ellwood City with a double. Rick Pitrelli, James Meehan, Ashton Wilson and Rush added singles. Brannagan led Deer Lakes with a double.   


KEYSTONE OAKS DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 9-6, IN THE QUARTER-FINALS OF THE WPIAL AAA PLAYOFFS


Keystone Oaks defeated Ellwood City, 9-6, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Upper St. Clair. Six unearned runs crossed the plate for Keystone Oaks to seal the defeat for Ellwood City. 

After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City scored twice in the top of the second inning. James Meehan drew a walk and John Biskup followed with a single. Ashton Wilson followed with a double scoring both runners to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning Keystone Oaks scored three unearned runs to take the lead. With two outs a triple by Colby Rockacy and two walks loaded the bases. An errant throw on a ground ball allowed three runs to score to give Keystone Oaks a 3-2 lead. Ellwood City tied the score with a bunt in the top of the fifth inning. Rick Pitrelli doubled, moved to third base and scored on a squeeze play by Sam DiCaprio. But  Keystone Oaks rallied for six runs in the bottom of the inning to break the tie. With two outs, Keystone Oaks got six singles and two errors to take a 9-3 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City scored three runs. Brady Welsh and Ryan Gibbons reached on errors and Pitrelli walked to load the bases. DiCaprio and Meehan followed with RBI-singles to cut the deficit to 9-5. Ellwood City scored another run to reduce the deficit to 9-6 but Keystone Oaks got the final three outs to end the game.

Ellwood City compiled  a 10-12 record  for the season. The Wolverines were runners-up in Section 6 play with a 7-3 record with Hopewell winning the league title. Hopewell defeated Ellwood City, 5-2 and 2-1. Hopewell won the WPIAL-AAA Championship.


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES KEYSTONE OAKS, 2-1, IN EIGHT INNINGS BEHIND GIBBONS ONE-HITTER IN WPIAL AAA PLAYOFF OPENING ROUND-GIBBONS SQUEEZE BUNT WINS IT


Ellwood City edged Keystone Oaks, 2-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL AAA Playoffs at Highlands.. Ryan Gibbons fired a one-hitter and layed down a squeeze bunt to score winning run to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Keystone Oaks tied the score 1-1 with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Ellwood City's Gibbons and Keystone Oaks' Dan O'Brien   held the opposition scoreless the next three innings to send the game to extra innings. After Gibbons retired Keystone Oaks in the top of the eighth inning, Ellwood City rallied in the bottom of the inning to score the game-winning run.  Ashton Wilson doubled down the left-field line to lead off the inning. John Biskup sacrificed Wilson to third base. O'Brien walked James Meehan and Sam DeCaprio intentionally to load the bases. Gibbons followed with a suicide squeeze bunt scoring Wilson to give Ellwood City the 2-1 victory. Winning pitcher Gibbons fired a one-hitter and fanned 14 batters for Ellwood City. O'Brien scattered six hits for Keystone Oaks. Wilson led Ellwood City at the plate  with a double. 


SOUTH PARK DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 13-5, IN WPIAL AAA QUARTER-FINALS


South Park defeated Ellwood City, 13-5, in the WPIAL AAA Quarter-Final round at Montour. South Park erased a 5-2 deficit on their way to the victory. Ellwood City scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. South Park rallied for two runs in their half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ellwood City added two more runs in the top of the second inning to open up a 5-2 lead. South Park scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at 5-5. South Park scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead. South Park pulled away with a seven-run fifth inning to open up a 13-5 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning pitcher Dylan Orth allowed one run in relief for South Park. Ellwood City standed 11 runners on base in the contest. Sam DeCaprio lead Ellwood City with two singles and two RBI.

Ellwood City logged an overall mark of 8-12 for the season. Ellwood City went 2-7 in exhibition play. The Wolverines were 6-4 in Section 3 A-1  with Hopewell winning the section 3A-1 title. Ellwood City lost to Hopewell 4-3 and 13-5. Mohawk was WPIAL runners-up. Ellwood City defeated Mohawk 7-1 and lost 5-2 in 10 innings.


EAST ALLEGHENY EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 5-4, IN NINE INNINGS IN WPIAL AAA OPENING ROUND


East Allegheny scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Ellwood City, 5-4, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Highlands. Traynor Jonosko singled in Jax Jurisic in with game-winning run for East Allegheny. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by Ashton Wilson and a triple by Joseph Roth. Ellwood City added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Roth singled, stole second base  and moved to third on an infield single by Nick Magnifico. A wild pitch allowed Roth to score to up the Ellwood City lead to 2-0. East Allegheny rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ryan Kirk keyed the uprising with a two-run homer to give East Allegheny a 4-2 lead. Ellwood City scored a run in the top of the sixth inning. Alexander Roth was hit by a pitch and Sam Landis followed with a single. Ryan Widmaier sacrificed the runners up and Ashton Wilson was walked intentionally. An error allowed Roth to score to slice the deficit to 4-3. In the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City rallied again on Alexander Roth's RBI-single to knot the score at 4-4 to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth inning, East Allegheny scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jurisic reached on an infield single with one out and stole second base. With two outs, after an intentional walk, Jonosko singled to left field and scored Jurisic on a close play at the plate to give East Allegheny the 5-4 victory. Joseph Roth led Ellwood City with two triples, a single and an RBI.
