ELLWOOD CITY EDGES NEW CASTLE, 2-1, IN LAWRENCE COUNTY AMERICAN LEGION TITLE SERIES OPENER BEHIND KOSIOR
Ellwood City edged New Castle, 2-1, in the opening game of the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at Ewing Park Field. The game was called after seven innings due to darkness. The victory gave Ellwood City a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Don Kosior fired a four-hitter to lead Ellwood City. Ellwood City scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a lead. Kosior singled, stole second base, moved to third base on a wild throw and scored on an error to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City added the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Henry Leymarie singled and stole second base. Max Giovanini singled scoring Leymarie to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Robert Sessions homered in the top of the sixth inning to account for the final 2-1 margin. Winning pitcher Kosior allowed one run in a route-going effort for Ellwood City. Cliff Rowland allowed Ellwood City five hits in six innings. Sessions led New Castle with a home run.

New Castle downed Ellwood City, 7-4, in the second game of the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at George Washington Field. The victory tied the best-of-three series at one game apiece. Kerr smacked a three-run homer and two singles to lead New Castle. Ellwood City scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City added two more run in the second inning to increase their lead to 3-0. New Castle rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. The key hit of the inning was Kerr's three-run homer to give New Castle a 5-3 lead. New Castle added solo runs in the sixth and eighth innings to up their lead to 7-3. Ellwood City added a run in the ninth inning to account for the final 7-4 margin. Kerr led New Castle with a home run, two singles and three RBI. Robert Sessions rapped three singles and Watters and Black singled twice. Winning pitcher Don Watters tossed a five-hitter for New Castle. Rudy Angelo led Ellwood City with two singles.

New Castle rolled past Ellwood City, 13-1, to win the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at Wampum. The victory gave New Castle the best-of-three series, two games to one. Robert Sessions ripped a home run, double and two singles and Kerr fired a four-hitter to lead New Castle. New Castle jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. New Castle added four more runs in the top of the second inning with four more runs to up their lead to 7-0. Ellwood City scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning to narrow their deficit to 7-1. After three scoreless innings, New Castle added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to increase their lead to 9-1. New Castle closed the scoring with two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth inning to account for the final 13-1 score. Sessions led New Castle with a home run, double and two singles for New Castle. Clarke rapped three singles and Szuba added a triple and double. Gray, Black, Don Watters and Kerr added two singles apiece. Al Miller led Ellwood City with a triple and double. Campbell and Bilo added doubles. Winning pitcher Kerr held Ellwood City to one run on four hits.

The victory gave Ellwood City a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Ellwood City opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, Ellwood City added three more runs in the third inning to up their lead to 5-0, Ellwood City added two more runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 7-0. Bessemer rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to narrow their deficit to 7-3. Ellwood City added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to stretch their lead to 9-3. Bessemer scored three more runs in the top of the seventh inning to narrow the final score to 9-6. Leymarie led Ellwood City with three singles. Hazen, Snare and Ron Martin added two singles apiece. Harry Miller was the starting and winning pitcher. Rich Lepovsky picked up the save. Hazen led Ellwood City with two singles.

New Wilmington defeated Ellwood City, 10-9, in the Lawrence County American Legion semi-final round at New Wilmington. The win knotted the best-of-three series at one-game apiece. New Wilmington erased a 7-1 deficit with a six-run fourth inning to tie the score at 7-7. New Wilmington scored a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to open a 10-7 lead. Ellwood City rallied in the top of the seventh inning with two runs to cut the deficit to 10-9 but the rally fell short. Yarletts was the winning pitcher for New Wilmington. Altman and Myers led New Wilmington with two hits. Dombeck and Brown led Ellwood City with two hits.

AMERICAN LEGION LEAGUE ORGANIZED
The Ellwood City American Legion League was organized for players, ages 16-18. The team was comprised of four teams-the Auto Dealers. B'nai Brith, Clover Farms and the Manufacturers. The league will be known at the American Legion Junior League.
AUTO DEALERS WIN 1ST ELLWOOD CITY AMERICAN LEGION JUNIOR LEAGUE TITLE
The Auto Dealers captured the 1st Ellwood City American Legion Junior League Championship. The Auto Dealers, managed by Vince Folino and Regis Carrozza, won the first-half and the second-half titles.
BLEGGI'S ARM, BAT LEAD NEW CASTLE OVER ELLWOOD CITY, 4-2, IN OPENING GAME OF LAWRENCE COUNTY AMERICAN LEGION SERIES
Behind the arm and bat of Bob Bleggi, New Castle downed Ellwood City, 4-2, in the opening game of the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at George Washington Field. Bleggi threw a five-hitter and smacked a tie-breaking two-run homer to lead New Castle. The teams were deadlocked at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning before Bleggi belted a two-run homer to give New Castle a 4-2 lead. Bleggi fanned 12 batters on the way to the victory on the mound. George Streheler and Russell Uram led New Castle with two singles. Bleggi homered with two RBI. Paul Petrak singled twice, Follett tripled and Don Costa doubled for Ellwood City.

Kellner tripled and doubled at the plate to pace Ellwood City. Reno Angelone added a double and single. Chet Boak singled twice to lead New Castle. Winning pitcher Dale Brown tossed a four-hitter for Ellwood City.

New Castle defeated Ellwood City, 2-0, to win the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at Flaherty Field before over 800 fans. Bob Bleggi fired a four-hit shutout and Chet Boak belted a two-run homer to lead New Castle. The win gave New Castle the best-of-three series, two games to one. New Castle scored the only two runs of the game in the first inning when Russell Uram walked and Boak followed with his two-run homer. Ellwood City mounted a serious threat by loading the bases with none out in the top of the sixth inning. But Bleggi struck out the next two batters and forced a ground out to end the inning. Bleggi fanned 13 batters on the mound for New Castle. Losing pitcher Dale Brown threw a four-hit complete-game for Ellwood City. In addition to Boak's homer, Norm Cook added two singles. Johnson doubled for Ellwood City. New Castle went on to win the district and regional championships and advanced to the state tournament.

New Castle broke a 3-3 tie with a six-run rally in the eighth inning to down Ellwood City, 9-4, in the opening game of the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at Ewing Park Field. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Sonny Gardner reached on an error and scored on Bill Frazier's RBI-single. New Castle tied the score, 1-1, in the top of the second inning on an RBI-single by Frank Bongivengo. New Castle added two more runs in the top of the third inning on a triple by Bob Boak and a home run by Walt Mangham to give New Castle a 3-1 lead. Ellwood City narrowed the lead to 3-2 with a tally in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ellwood City tied the score on a triple by Dick Pertile and a pinch-hit single by Don Schaly to knot the score at 3-3 and force extra innings. New Castle took command in the eighth inning. Boak and Mangham singled and scored on Tom Latsko's triple to give New Castle a 5-3 lead. An error scored Latsko to up the lead to 6-3. Boak led New Castle with a triple and single. Dan DiCarlo had three singles and Mangham singled twice for New Castle. Don Costa led Ellwood City with a double and single. Frazier singled twice and Pertile tripled. Boak was the winning pitcher for New Castle in an complete-game effort. Boak fanned nine batters without a walk.

NEW CASTLE EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 3-2, IN EXTRA INNINGS TO WIN LAWRENCE COUNTY AMERICAN LEGION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES BEHIND LAMBO
New Castle scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge Ellwood City, 3-2, to win the Lawrence County American Legion Championship Series at Flaherty Field. Joe Lambo collected four hits including the game-winner for New Castle. The victory gave New Castle the best-of-three series two games to none. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a single by Dick Pertile, a walk, a hit-batsman and a ground out. In the second inning, New Castle tied the score at 1-1. Bob Boak walked, moved to second base on a balk, moved to third base on Joe Lambo's single and scored on Dan DiCarlo's sacrifice fly. The score remained tied at 1-1 after seven innings to force extra innings. Ellwood City took a 2-1 lead on a double by Bill Frazier, an error and Sonny Gardner's sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the eighth inning, New Castle rallied back to win the game. Frank Bongivengo reached first base on an error and was sacrificed to second base by Joe Kipnis. Boak reached on an infield single and Walt Mangham was walked to load the bases. Lambo followed with a double down the rightfield line scoring Bongivengo to tie the game at 2-2 and Boak to win it 3-2. Lambo led New Castle with two doubles, two singles and two RBI. Bongivengo added a double. Pertile led Ellwood City with a double and single and Frazier added a double. Ron Abraham was the winning pitcher for New Castle on a three-hitter. Joe Raman allowed seven hits in 7-1/3 innings for Ellwood City.

Carl Florie's infield single scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Winning pitcher Joe Cioffi tossed a five-hitter for the Auto Dealers. John Perry led the Auto Dealers with a two-run triple. Joe Raman fanned 13 batters for B'nai Brith. Bill Frazier led B'nai Brith with a home run and Don Schaly with a double.

Dick Pertile drove in seven runs to lead Ellwood City to a 20-0 win over Wampum in the Lawrence County American Legion Playoffs at Ewing Park Field. The win gave Ellwood City a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Pertile smashed a grand slam homer and a bases-clearing double for Ellwood City. Winning pitcher Stan Platek threw four innings and John Elchison tossed three innings to combine on a one-hitter.

Ron Abraham fired a three-hitter to lead New Castle to a 3-1 win over Ellwood City in the opener of the Lawrence County American Legion
Championship Series at Flaherty Field. Ellwood City opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Bill Frazier singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Amey Alfonso to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead, Ellwood City held the lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. Kenny Mally singled and an error and fielder's choice loaded the bases. The next two batters drew walks forcing in two runs to give New Castle a 2-1 lead. New Castle added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk, an error and singles by Mally and Dave Alexander to account for the final margin of 3-1. Winning pitcher Abraham allowed one earned run in complete-game effort. Losing pitcher Ron Hughes surrendered four hits over five innings for Ellwood City.

New Castle trimmed Ellwood City, 4-1, at Flaherty Field to win the Lawrence County American Legion title behind the five-hit pitching of Ron Abraham. The victory gave New Castle the best-of-three series, two games to one. After three scoreless innings, New Castle scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joe Lambo doubled and scored on a double by Pete Leonard to open a 1-0 lead for New Castle. Fran Hartfelder was hit by a pitch and an error allowed Leonard to score to up the lead to 2-0. Frank Bongivengo was walked intentionally and Kent Mally followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Ellwood City narrowed the score to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning on a double by Bill Frazier and an RBI-single by John Perry. Winning pitcher Abraham allowed one earned run in a seven-inning complete game. Lambo led New Castle with a double and single. Hartfelder added two singles. Frazier led Ellwood City with a double. New Castle won the district and regional titles and advanced to the state tournament.
