ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS WAMPUM, 3-2, IN FIRST BASEBALL GAME IN ELLWOOD CITY HISTORY


In the beginning, there was baseball. As the Borough of Ellwood City is being incorporated, the first community baseball team is being formed. Under the management of George B. Nye, a baseball club is organized in May. On July 4, 1892 the first game ever played by an Ellwood City community team takes place on a field on Spring Avenue between Fourth Street and Fifth Street. In the inaugural game in Ellwood City history, Ellwood City defeats Wampum, 3-2, behind winning pitcher Thomas C. Marshall.

BASEBALL CLUBS ARE ORGANIZED


More baseball clubs are organized in Ellwood City. Baseball clubs limit play primarily to games within the immediate area. Games are played within city limits and at Rock Point Park and Hazel Dell.

STEEL CAR FORGE ORGANIZES TEAM


The Steel Car Forge team is organized by C.A. Martin. The team is the first Ellwood City team formed to compete against surrounding communities. Players include Ellwood City infielder Connie Wardman and pitcher Paul Luther of Pittsburgh.

SHELBY TUBE TEAM ORGANIZED AND SHELBY TUBE FIELD BUILY


 The Shelby Tube Company, bases in Shelby, Ohio, builds a steel tubing plant in Ellwood City. The Shelby Tube team, nicknamed the "Tubers", becomes the second local team to compete against surrounding communities. A baseball field, to be known as Shelby Field , is built on the property of the Shelby Tube Company property next to the mill. The field is also known as Tunnel Field due to its' proximity to the railroad tunnel.

STEEL CAR FORGE DEFEATS SHELBY TUBE TO WIN CITY TITLE


In a battle for the city title, the Steel Car Forge team downs Shelby Tube, three games to one. Steel Car Forge won the opener, 1-0, and the second game ended in a 2-2 tie after 13 innings. Shelby Tube knots the series at one game apiece after winning the third game, 5-3. Steel Car Forge wins the fourth game, 11-8, to take a two games to one lead in the series. Steel Car Forge wins the fifth game, 12-3, to win the series and claim the city championship.

SHELBY SOCIALS WIN TROLLEY LEAGUE-CAPTURE FIRST TITLE IN ELLWOOD CITY HISTORY


The Steel Car Forge and the Shelby Tube teams are combined. The team, under the sponsorship of  the Shelby Socials, win Ellwood City's first baseball title by capturing the Trolley League Championship with an undefeated 10-0 record. The league, formed on the Harmony Streetcar Line, is comprised if Ellwood City, Butler, Evans City, Mars, Zelienople and Callery. The line-up during the season included Connie Wardman at third base, Chip Bayers in leftfield, Bill Bayers at second base, Goven "Mac" MacMurdo in centerfield, Bid Gillespie at first base, Joe Havice in rightfield, Barney McKay at shortstop and Kelley as the catcher. Paul Luther and Ben Wilson were the top pitchers. The team, managed by Dick Brock, finished the season with a 19-1 record.

SHELBY TUBE EXPANSION  FORCES LOSS OF SHELBY FIELD, SHELBY SOCIALS DISBAND


Due to extensive additions to the Shelby Tube Company, Shelby Field is demolished to make room for the expansion of the mill. The field has the premier baseball venue in the city since its' erection in 1908. Due to the loss of Shelby Field, the Shelby Socials team is disbanded.

THE SHELBY BASEBALL LEAGUE IS ORGANIZED


The Shelby Baseball League is organized and the games are played on a filed between Glen Avenue and Second Street. Among the teams in the league are Bell A.C. , 4th Ward and the Eagles. The Fourth Ward ended the season with a 22-4 record. Pitcher Lefty Palm compiled a 17-1 record for the 4th Ward. The Eagles defeated Zelienople in an exhibition, 6-0, behind pitcher Carlo Johns' 18 strikeouts.

BASEBALL PLAY BEGINS AT EWING PARK


On Saturday, June 12, 1920 the first baseball game ever at Ewing Park  is played on the new grounds. In a game beginning at 3:15 PM, Ellwood City Shelby Tube defeats the Ritter Conley Company team of Leetsdale, 7-3. Morrison is the winning pitcher for Shelby Tube. The new grounds are used from June 12 through July 3 for the Shelby Tube team. The Shelby Team completes the rest of the season at the new Lincoln High School field. The Ewing Park grounds will be completely renovated in 1921 and will become the  center of Ellwood City baseball activities.


SHELBY TUBE AND STANDARD ENGINEERING ORGANIZE BASEBALL TEAMS


Shelby Tube and Standard Engineering organize teams to participate against area competition. Shelby Tube started their season playing on the new grounds at Ewing Park and completed their season on the new grounds at Lincoln High School. Shelby Tube finished their season with a 12-6 record. The top pitcher was Nicholson with six victories which included a no-hit 4-0 victory against Butler. Standard Engineering completed their season with an identical 12-6 record. Knause led Standard Engineering with seven victories on the mound. Shelby Tube downed Standard Engineering in their only meeting, 22-6.

EWING PARK FIELD UNDERGOES CONSTRUCTION


The Shelby Tube Company purchased over 300 lots in the area from Riverside Drive on the west to Joffre Street on the east. The property boundary on the north is the Ellwood City-New Castle Road. The Shelby Tube Company's plan of lots are used for housing and recreation for the Shelby Tube workers. The area will be named Ewing Park in honor of Shelby Tube Company attorney Thomas Ewing who oversees the construction of the plan. A baseball field is constructed between Petain Street and Foch Street. In May the construction of grandstands behind home plate begins and the field is graded. A wooden fence is also erected at the field. Due to the construction of the field, the Shelby Socials season is delayed until June 18. 


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS HUBBARD, OH, 20-9, IN THE FIRST GAME EVER AT EWING PARK FIELD


On Saturday, June 18, 1921 the first game ever played at the newly-constructed Ewing Park Field is played beginning at 3:30 PM. The Ellwood City Shelby Socials defeated Hubbard, OH, 20-9, in the inaugural game. The New Castle News reported that, "Ewing Park, used for the very first time, proved to be an ideal place for playing baseball and the big crowd thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the new bleachers and purchasing refreshments, which were dispensed by numerous persons."


DIP MCDANEL GRAND SLAM POWERS ELLWOOD CITY OVER HOMESTEAD GRAYS, 5-4


Ellwood City celebrates Merchants Day on July 20, 1921 by hosting the legendary Homestead Grays before the largest crowd in the city's 30-year history. Dip McDanel, considered the town's greatest athlete until that time, hits a grand-slam home run in the first inning over the left-field fence. The homer is the key hit in the Ellwood City 5-4 upset win.

EAGLES AND IMPERIALS REPRESENT ELLWOOD CITY IN AREA COMPETITION


Ellwood City had two teams represent the city against area competition: The Eagles and the Imperials. The Eagles, managed by Bud Wardman, ended the season with a record of 11-7. Buck Falconie led the pitching staff with six victories. The Imperials, managed by Joe Smith, ended the season with a 14-7 record. Pitcher Pat Boyle accounted for nine victories on the mound. 


EAGLES DEFEAT IMPERIALS FOR CITY TITLE


The Eagles and Imperials met in a five-game series for the city title. The Eagles downed the Imperials, 5-2, behind winning pitcher Carlo Johns. The Imperials, behind pitcher Van Dyke, won the next to games, 4-0, and 13-1. The Eagles won the fourth game to tie the series. The Eagles edged the Imperials, 3-2, in the fifth game to win the city title. New Castle pitcher Fiz Rodenbaugh out-dueled Pat Boyle to give the Eagles the win.

EAGLES AND KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS REPRESENT ELLWOOD CITY


Ellwood City was once again represented this season by two teams: the Eagles and the Knights of Pythias. The teams played an independent exhibition schedule against area teams. Connie Wardman managed the Eagles and Jimmy Guy piloted the Knights of Pythias. The Eagles ended the season with a 6-17 record and the Knights of Pythias compiled a 13-5 record. The Knights of Pythias were led by shortstop Jesse Brown with six home runs. and first baseman Holliday Newton with four home runs. Dewey Cunningham added three triples.


KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS  SWEEP THE EAGLES FOR CITY TITLE


The Knights of Pythias swept three straight games to win the city championship over the Eagles. The Knights defeated the Eagles, 3-2, in the opener with Sankey out-dueling Carlo Johns on the mound. The Knights took the next two games with a 5-4 win in 12 innings and completed the sweep with an 11-5 win.

ELLWOOD CITY JOINS LAWRENCE COUNTY LEAGUE


The Lawrence County League is organized and Ellwood City has one of the initial entries. Under the sponsorship of the the Shelby Socials, Ellwood City records a 9-9 slate in the league and compiles a 12-12 record overall.

ELLWOOD CITY, COALTOWN TIE FOR LAWRENCE COUNTY BASEBALL LEAGUE TITLE IN REGULAR SEASON-ELLWOOD CITY LOSES TITLE SERIES


Ellwood City and Coaltown tied for the Lawrence County Baseball League regular season pennant. Both teams finished the season with identical 16-5 records to force a three-game series to decide the champion. Under the sponsorship of the Shelby Socials, Ellwood City loses the best-of-three championship series, two games to one.


COALTOWN EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 2-1, IN OPENER OF LAWRENCE COUNTY BASEBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES


Coaltown scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning and held on to edge Ellwood City, 2-1, in the opening game of the Lawrence County Baseball League Championship Series at Ewing Park Field. Coaltown opened a 1-0 lead in the  first inning. Murphy singled and  Gerald Earls followed with a triple off the left field fence. The lead held up until the bottom of the fifth inning when Ellwood City knotted the score at 1-1. Harry Noss singled to right field and moved to third base when a sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Ray Dallenbach followed with a long sacrifice fly to right field to score Noss. Coaltown scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning when Cleary walked, stole second base and moved to third base on a ground out. Cleary then slid home on a wild pitch to give Coaltown the 2-1 winning margin. Walter Kirker scattered five hits to gain the win on the mound for Coaltown. Pat Boyle was the losing pitcher for Ellwood City. Earls led Coaltown with a triple and Noss singled twice for Ellwood City.


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS COALTOWN, 12-2, TO KNOT LAWRENCE COUNTY BASEBALL LEAGUE TITLE SERIES


Ellwood City banged out 16 hits on the way to a 12-2 win over Coaltown in the second game of the Lawrence County Championship Series at Coaltown. Ellwood City scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Ellwood City added three runs in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning to open up a 9-1 lead. Ray Dallenbach homered and tripled to lead Ellwood City at the plate. Pat Boyle homered and singled and Dewey Cunningham tripled twice. Jesse Brown and Jimmy Guy doubled and singled and Harry Noss and Sumner singled twice. Murphy led Coaltown with a home run and Kirker added a double. Boyle tossed a six-hitter to gain the win on the mound.


COALTOWN DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 6-4, TO WIN THE LAWRENCE COUNTY BASEBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP


Coaltown scored five runs in the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and held on to defeat Ellwood City, 6-4, to win the Lawrence County Baseball League Championship at Energy. Ellwood City took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on Dewey Cunningham two-run homer. The lead stood until the sixth inning when Coaltown scored five runs on six consecutive hits to take a 5-2 lead. Coaltown added an insurance run in the eighth inning to up the lead to 6-2. Ellwood City rallied in the top of the ninth inning to score twice before Coaltown notched the final three outs. Walter Kirker and Stimple doubled and singled to lead Coaltown at the plate. Murphy, Palus and Minor added two singles apiece. Dewey Cunningham led Ellwood City with a home run and two triples. Kirker scattered seven hits to pick up the win for Coaltown on the mound.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS LAWRENCE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP


Ellwood City compiled a 32-10 in league play to win the Lawrence County Baseball Championship. Under the sponsorship of the Shelby Socials, the title was the first for Ellwood City in the league-which was organized in 1924. Ellwood City was managed by Connie Wardman, the star infielder of the 1909 Trolley League champions.

BROWN SMACKS TWO HOME RUNS TO LEAD ELLWOOD CITY OVER BEAVER, 12-4, IN BEAVER COUNTY TITLE OPENER


Ellwood City defeated Beaver, 12-4, in the opening game of the Beaver County League Championship Series at Ewing Park Field. The victory gave Ellwood City a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Jesse Brown smacked two home runs to lead Ellwood City. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning with two outs. Grundy Volpe smacked a double down the third base line and scored on Frank Fitzgerald's single to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Mickey Huff walked and Brown belted his first home run to right field to give Ellwood City a 3-0 lead. Ellwood City added another run to up the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ellwood City added another tally. Fred Sanders led of with a single, went to third base on a sacrifice bunt when the base was left unattended on the play. Pat Boyle lifted a sacrifice fly scoring Sanders to up the lead to 5-0. Ellwood City exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Volpe singled, moved to second base on a bunt and scored on a single by Huff to give Ellwood City a 6-0 lead. Brown followed with his second home run to left-center to up the margin to 8-0. Grinnen walked  and  Fred Sanders singled him to third base. Grinnen scored on an error to raise the lead to 9-0. Marshall doubled to score Sanders to up the lead to 10-0. Boyle followed with a triple to score Marshall to increase the lead to 11-0. Volpe singled scoring Boyle to give Ellwood City a 12-0 lead. Beaver scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to narrow the score to 12-4. The game was called at that time due to darkness. Brown led Ellwood City with two home runs, a single and five RBI. Volpe added a double and two singles. Fred Sanders singled twice and Boyle added a triple. Winning pitcher Boyle threw a two-hitter for Ellwood City.


ELLWOOD CITY  DOWNS BEAVER, 5-2, TO WIN BEAVER COUNTY TITLE BEHIND BOYLE


Pat Boyle tossed a complete game to lead Ellwood City to a 5-2 win over Beaver to win the Beaver County League Championship a Beaver. The win completed a two-game sweep of the best-of-three series. Mickey Huff smacked a home run for Ellwood City.

HACK WILSON JOINS ELLWOOD CITY TEAM FOR GAME AGAINST ALIQUIPPA


National League home run leader Hack Wilson joined his hometown Ellwood City team in an exhibition at Aliquippa. With permission from the Chicago Cubs, Wilson participated in an exhibition game with Ellwood City against Aliquippa and belted two home runs.


ELLWOOD CITY CLAIMS BEAVER COUNTY LEAGUE CO-CHAMPIONSHIP


Ellwood City claimed a co-championship of the Beaver County League championship with Rochester. Under the sponsorship of the Shelby Socials, Ellwood City, managed by Connie Wardman, won the first-half title and Rochester won the second-half crown. The  teams squared off for a best-of-five series for the league championship. Ellwood City lost at Rochester in the opening game, 8-4. The second game ended in a 3-3 tie at Ewing Park Field. Rochester won the third game, 5-3, at Rochester. Ellwood City won the fourth game over Rochester, 13-9, at Ewing Park Field. Rochester claimed Ellwood City had used imported players and the series was never completed. Ellwood City and Rochester both claimed the title. Ellwood City compiled a 19-12 record in the league.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES DEFEAT ELLWOOD CITY, 4-0, AT EWING PARK FIELD


The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated Ellwood City, 4-0, at Ewing Park Field before perhaps the largest crowd to watch a game in the town's history.  The Pirates visited Ellwood City on August 4 as part of the annual "Booster Day' celebration to participate in the Monday afternoon exhibition. Hall of Fame players, Pie Traynor and Lloyd Waner, did not see action. Hall of Fame player Paul Waner and  National League All-Star were held hitless. Pat Boyle went the distance on the mound for Ellwood City. Grundy Volpe led Ellwood City with three singles. Mike Sanders and Frank Fitzgerald added singles.

JESSE BROWN HITS LONGEST HOME RUN EVER AT LINCOLN FIELD


On July 19, Jesse Brown launched the longest home run ever at Lincoln High School Field. Before a crowd estimated at over 2,000, Brown belted a home run that landed on the roof of the high school. The home run accounted for the only run for the Ellwood City Smith's in a 6-1 loss to Beaver Falls in a Beaver County League game.

ELLWOOD CITY  WINS BEAVER COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP


Ellwood City, playing under the sponsorship of the Shelby Socials, won the Beaver County League Championship. Ellwood City won the second half title and met first-half champions, Beaver, in the championship series. Ellwood City, managed by Mark Jamison and Dick Dowling, compiled a 22-4 record in league play and 31-9 overall. At one point, the Shelby Socials had won an incredible 19 games in a row.

Beaver downed Ellwood City, 5-3, in the opening game of the Beaver County League Championship Series at Ewing Park Field.

ELLWOOD CITY KNOTS TITLE SERIES WITH 5-4 WIN OVER BEAVER


Ellwood City defeated Beaver, 5-4, at Beaver to tie the Beaver County League Championship Series. Pitcher Dory Gunnett raised his record to 16-0 with the win. 


MCCULLOUGH LEADS ELLWOOD CITY OVER BEAVER, 3-2, TO TAKE LEAD IN BEAVER COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES


Paul McCullough fanned 13 batters  and homered to lead Ellwood City to a 3-2 win over Beaver in the Beaver County League Championship Series at Beaver. The win, the first part of a doubleheader on Labor Day, gave Ellwood City a two games to one lead in the series.


BROWN LEADS ELLWOOD CITY TO 7-6 WIN OVER BEAVER IN  BEAVER COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES


Jesse Brown smacked two triples to lead Ellwood City to a 7-6 win over Beaver in the Beaver County League Championship Series at Ewing Park Field. The win, in the second game of a Labor Day doubleheader, gave Ellwood City a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. In addition to Brown's offense, Fred DeTullio homered for Ellwood City.  Dom Mundo was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City.

Beaver downed Ellwood City, 6-1, in the Beaver County League Championship Series at Beaver. The win narrowed  Ellwood City's lead in the series to three  games to two. 


MCCULLOUGH 'S HOMER GIVES ELLWOOD CITY 2-0 WIN OVER BEAVER TO WIN BEAVER COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP


Sank McCullough belted a two-run homer in the top of the tenth inning to give Ellwood City to a 2-0 victory over Beaver to win the Beaver County League Championship at Beaver. With the win, Ellwood City captured the Beaver County League Championship Series, four games to two. After nine scoreless innings, Dick Freidhoff singled and McCullough delivered the game-winning blow. Dory Gunnett, who relieved Paul McCullough earlier in the game, picked up the victory in relief.

After winning the Beaver County League title, Ellwood City was matched against Lawrence County League champion  Bessemer in a best-of-three series.

Ellwood City and Bessemer played to a 7-7 tie at Ewing Park Field in the second game of a series between the Beaver County champion and the Lawrence County champion.

Lawrence County champion Bessemer defeated Beaver County champion, Ellwood City, 8-3, at Bessemer. The victory knotted the best-of-three series at one game apiece.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS INTER-CITY LEAGUE CROWN


Ellwood City won the Inter-City League title by winning both the first and second half titles. Under the sponsorship of the Shelby Socials, Ellwood City was managed by Walter Landgraph. The league was compiled of most of the Beaver County League teams of previous years. Both halves ended with disputed decisions. Ellwood City ended the year with a league record of 30-9 and an overall record of 38-15. Ellwood City met the Lawrence County League champions and were swept in three straight games. Bessemer downed Ellwood City, 7-0, 9-2 and 4-3 in 12 innings.

Ellwood City downed Bessemer, 3-1, at Ewing Park Field to take the second game of the Lawrence County League Championship Series. The victory gave Ellwood City a two games to none lead in the best-of-five series. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Vic Franus singled, mobed to second base and scored on an-RBI single by Biff  Blazin. Ellwood City incresed their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the fourth inning on RBI-singles by Dick Freidhoff and Lafty Miller. Bessemer scored their only run in the top of the eighth inning. Miller scattered 12 hits in a complete-game victory on the mound. Ray Smith led Ellwood City with a double and single. John Mazzant, Syl Ferrucci and Franus added two singles apiece. W. Stanley led Bessemer with a double and three singles. G. Stanley added three singles and Hervatine singled twice. Winning pitcher Miller fanned four batters. Snyder was the losing pitcher for Bessemer.

Ellwood City edged Bessemer, 3-2, to win the Lawrence County League Championship Series at Bessemer. The win completed a three-game sweep for Ellwood City in the best-of-five series. Ellwood City scored two runs in the third inning to open a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City added another run in the fourth inning to raise the lead to 3-0. Bessemer scored a  single run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Bessemer added another run in the eighth inning to narrow the lead to 3-2. Bessemer failed to score in the bottom of the ninth inning and the title went to Ellwood City. Ralph Ferrante allowed two runs to pick up the victory on the mound. Snyder was the losing pitcher for Bessemer. Lee Shirey led Ellwood City with two singles. G. Stanley, Tropea and Snyder singled  twice for Bessemer.


LAWRENCE INDIES DEFEAT ELLWOOD CITY IN CITY-COUNTY SERIES


The Lawrence Indies, City League champions defeated Ellwood City, Lawence County League champions, to win the best-of -five series. The Lawrence Indies won the series three games to two. The Lawrence Indies won the first two games of the series, 6-4 and 3-2, Ellwood City win the next two games 5-4 and 11-4. The Lawrence Indies won the fifth and final game, 11-7.

Ellwood City knotted the Lawrence County League Championship Series with a 7-3 win  over Hillsville at Hillsville. Dick Freidhoff smacked a home run to lead Ellwood City. Jim McCready picked up the win on the mound. 


MAZZANT, GRECO PACE ELLWOOD CITY IN 5-4 WIN OVER HILLSVILLE


Ellwood City edged Hillsville, 5-4, in the third game of the Lawrence County League Championship Series at Ewing Park. The victory gave Ellwood City a two games to one lead in the best-of-three series. Ellwood City scored the winning run on a bases loaded walk to Bill Marshall. John Mazzant homered to lead Ellwood City at the plate. Pete Greco was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City. 


HILLSVILLE EDGES ELLWOOD CITY,4-3, TO KNOT LAWRENCE COUNTY TITLE SERIES


Hillsville edged Ellwood City, 4-3, to tie the Lawrence County League Championship Series at Hillsville. The win tied the best-of-five series at two games apiece.

Ellwood City and Hillsville were declared co-champions of the  Lawrence County League. The fifth and final game of the best-of five series could not be played due to the inclement weather in October.

ELLWOOD CITY CELEBRATES GOLDEN JUBILEE WITH  WIN OVER EAST LIVERPOOL AND "OLD TIMERS GAME"


Ellwood City celebrated the 50th anniversary of its incorporation as a borough throughout the year. A "Golden Jubilee' game was played at Ewing Park and Ellwood City defeated East Liverpool, 8-6. An "Old Timers Game" was also played to celebrated Ellwood City's 50th anniversary. Many legendary players of the past partiipated in the exhibition. Pat Boyle squared off against Carlo Johns on the mound. Fred Sanders homered and Jesse Brown doubled.

Ellwood City won its third straight county league title by winning the New Castle City League championship. Under the sponsorship of the Shelby Socials, Ellwood City logged a 12-3 record in exhibition play.  The New Castle Moose won the first-half title and Ellwood City  captured the second-half pennant. Ellwood met the New Castle Moose in a best-of-five series for the title. Ellwood City, managed by George Patterson, compiled a 28-10 record overall.

Ellwood City finished runner-up in the Lawrence County League. Under the sponsorship of the Elks, Ellwood City won the regular season title. Under the new Shaughnessy playoff system, Ellwood City met third-place Bessemer in the opening round. Ellwood City swept Bessemer and met Wampum in the  best-of-five series finals.

ELLWOOD CITY WINS LAWRENCE COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP


Ellwood City won the Lawrence County League Championship. Under the sponsorship of the Moose, Ellwood City finished in second place behind Wampum with a 28-10 record. Ellwood City swept two straight games in the first round of the Shaughnessy

playoffs against New Galilee. In the semi-final round, Ellwood City won two straight games over Wampum to reach the finals. Ellwood City, managed by Dick Freidhoff, logged a 35-10 record overall.


ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS BESSEMER, 9-5, IN LAWRENCE COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE OPENER


 Ellwood City defeated Bessemer, 9-5, in the opening game of the Lawrence County League Championship Series at Bessemer. Ralph Ferrante was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City.

Ellwood City competed in the Lawrence County League. Playing under the sponsorship of the Moose, Ellwood City went 27-14 in the Lawrence County League regular season. In the first round of the Shaugnessy playoffs, Ellwood City  met Wampum. Wampum defeated Ellwood City in the opener, 5-4, in 11 innings at Wampum. The teams tied the next two games, 2-2 and 2-2. Playing for the third straight day, Wampum defeated Ellwood City, 8-3, at Ewing Park Field to win the best-of-three series, two games to none. Ellwood City, managed by Dick Freidhoff, compiled a 31-16 mark overall.

The Ellwood City Vets won the the VFW State Tournament at State College. The Vets defeated New Castle, 14-4, and Clarion, 6-3, to reach the state final.  The Vets defeated Coatsville, 10 -4, to win the VFW State Championship.

ELLWOOD CITY RETURNS TO COUNTY LEAGUE BASEBALL


After 14 years with without a county league team, Ellwood City organized their first team since 1957,  Under the sponsorship of Beatrice Sporting Goods, Ellwood City joined the North County League.



THELLMAN NO-HITS EDINBURG, 5-1, IN OPENING GAME OF CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES


Ron Thellman fired a no-hitter to lead  Ellwood City to a 5-1 win over Edinburg in the opening game of the North County League Championship Series.


EDINBURG EDGES ELLWOOD CITY, 3-2, TO TIE  NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES


Edinburg scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Ellwood City, 3-2, in the North County League Championship Series at Edinburg. The victory knotted the best-of-five series at one game apiece. Ellwood City opened the scoring in the top of the second inning  to take a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning to open up a 2-0 lead. Edinburg tied the game a 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Larry Roberts' sacrifice fly scored Jim Olenick with the winning run. Roberts tossed a three-hitter to gain the win for Edinburg. Losing pitcher Pete Sheeler fired a four-hitter. Bob Beltz doubled for Ellwood City.

Ellwood City captured the North County League title for the second straight year. Ellwood City, managed by Joe Hairhoger, swept Union in the best-of-five series. Under the sponsorship of Beatrice Sporting Goods, Ellwood City won the regular season title with a 30-7 record and finished 33-7 overall. 


BARTOLOMEO FOUR-HITS UNION IN OPENING GAME OF NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES


Rich Bartolomeo hurled a four-hit shutout to lead Ellwood City over Union, 4-0, in the North County League Championship Series at Sanders Field. Randy Chesko led Ellwood City a the plate with a double. 


ELLWOOD CITY RALLIES TO DEFEAT UNION, 5-4, IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES


Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat Union, 5-4, in the North County League Championship Series at Union. The win gave Ellwood City a two games to none lead in the best-of-five series. Ellwood City trailed 4-2 entering the top of the fifth inning. Ellwood City narrowed the lead to 4-3 before Bob Beltz singled in two runs to give Ellwood City the lead, Chuck Nardone and Randy Crum led Ellwood City with home runs. Pete Quinn and Rick Quinn tripled for Union. Pete Sheeler threw a complete game victory for Ellwood City.

ELLWOOD CITY EDGES EDINBURG, 2-1, IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE SEMI-FINALS SERIES OPENER ON CONTI'S SINGLE


Ellwood City scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Edinburg, 2-1, in the North County League semi-finals series at Sanders Field. Brian Conti singled in Don Mancini with the game-winning hit. Edinburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Ken Crutcher walked, moved to third base on a single by John Carothers and scored on a ground out. Ellwood City tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double by Chuck Nardone and an RBI-single by Rich Herman. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mancini walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Brian Conti's game-winning single. Mancini was the winning pitcher in relief of Rich Bartolomeo. Bartolomeo allowed two hits and one run over four innings. Mancini surrendered a hit in three shutout innings of relief. Nardone led Ellwood City with a double and single.

Volant  defeated Ellwood City, 9-6, in the opening game of the North County League Championship Series at Flaherty Field. Volant held a 1-0 lead after two innings before scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Volant added four more runs in the  fourth inning to open up a 9-0 lead. Ellwood City scored three runs in the sixth inning and three more runs in the seventh inning to narrow the score to 9-6. Keith Goodge led Volant with a triple and double and three RBI.  Glenn McKissick doubled and singled and drove in three runs. Tom Burford doubled and singled twice and scored three runs . Pete Sheeler led Ellwood City with a two-run homer. Bob Green picked up the win for Volant.

Ellwood City scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City added another run in the third inning to open up a 3-0 lead. Volant cut the lead to 3-1 in the third inning. Lou Sbarra singled in an insurance run in the sixth to up the Ellwood City lead to 4-1. Sheeler led Ellwood City with a triple and two singles. Ike Dubrasky and Steve Calabrese singled twice for Volant. Winning pitcher Nardone tossed a five-hitter in a complete-game victory for Ellwood City. 


VOLANT RALLIES FOR THREE RUNS IN FINAL INNING TO SLIP BY ELLWOOD CITY, 4-3, IN NORTH COUNTY TITLE SERIES


Volant rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip by Ellwood City, 4-3, in the third game of the North County League Championship Series at Flaherty Field. The victory gave Volant a two games to one lead in the best-of-five series. Ellwood City took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run single by Chuck Nardone. Volant sliced the lead to 2-1 on an RBI-single by Steve Calabrese in the fourth inning. Ellwood City raised their lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Bob Beltz. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Volant placed two runners in scoring position on a walk to Ike Dubrasky and a double by Ed Trimble. Dubrasky scored on a groundout to cut the lead to 3-2. Jim Clare singled scoring Trimble to tie the game at 3-3. With two outs, Joe Hudak singled in Clare with the game-winning run. Clare led Volant with two singles and Trimble added a double. Nardone and Rich Bartolomeo singled twice for Ellwood City. Hudak scattered six hits for Volant to gain the victory on the mound. Bartolomeo was the losing pitcher in a complete-game effort.


BELTZ FIRES TWO-HITTER AS ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS VOLANT, 4-0,  IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES  


Bob Beltz  fired a two-hitter as Ellwood City downed Volant, 4-0, in the North County League Championship Series at Sanders Field. The victory deadlocked the best-of-five series at two games apiece. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Beltz. In the second inning, two walks and and RBI-single by Chuck Nardone gave Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI-single by Chuck Hutchison and a sacrifice -fly by Randy Chesko to take a 4-0 lead. Winning pitcher Beltz fanned seven batters along the way.

Ellwood City scored four runs in the final two innings to edge Volant, 4-3, to win the North County League Championship Series at Flaherty Field. Pete Sheeler singled in Randy Chesko in the bottom of the seventh inning for the game-winning run. The comeback win gave Ellwood City the best-of-five series, three games to two. Volant took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk to Glen McKissick and an RBI-double by Steve Calabrese. In the second inning, Joe Hudak singled, moved to second base on a sacrifice and scored on Keith Goodge's RBI-single to up the Volant lead to 2-0. In the fourth inning, Volant raised their lead to 3-0. McKissick reached on an error, moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a single  by Calabrese. Down 3-0, Ellwood City rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chuck Nardone led off with a single and Sheeler drew a base on balls. Vic Sharek followed with a single scoring Nardone to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sheeler scored on an error to narrow the lead to 3-2. Sharek scored on a sacrifice fly by Prence t tie the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Randy Chesko led off with a  single and infield singles by Nardone and Brian Conti loaded the bases. Sheeler followed with a single scoring Chesko  to give Ellwood City the 4-3 win. Nardone lead Ellwood City with three singles. Chesko added two singles. Calabrese doubled and singled to lead Volant. Winning pitcher Sheeler fanned seven batters in six innings of relief. Losing pitcher John Munnell went the distance for Volant.

Ellwood City won the North County League Championship for the fourth time in five years. Ellwood City, managed by Carmen Beatrice, also  won the regular season pennant. Under the sponsorship of Beatrice Sporting Goods, Ellwood City received a bye to the championship series against defending champion, Volant.


PISANO HURLS ELLWOOD CITY TO 9-0 WIN OVER VOLANT TO WINREGULAR SEASON CROWN


Frank Pisano hurled a three-shutout to lead Ellwood City to a 9-0 win over Volant to win the regular season title at Laurel. Ellwood City and Volant had identical 34-6 records in the regular season which forced the one-game playoff. The victory gives Ellwood City a bye till the championship series. After three scoreless innings, Ellwood City scored three runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to open a 9-0 lead. Winning pitcher Pisano allowed just three singles in a route-going effort. Ted Zikeli and Rich Herman led Ellwood City with two singles apiece. Pete Sheeler tripled and drove in two runs and Vic Sharek tripled with three RBI.


NARDONE LEADS ELLWOOD CITY OVER VOLANT, 6-4, IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES OPENER


Chuck Nardone rapped three hits and drove in three runs as Ellwood City defeated Volant, 6-4, in the opening game of the North County League Championship Series at Sanders Field. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Nardone doubled and scored on two wild pitches. In the second inning, Ellwood City upped their lead. Pete Sheeler drew a base on balls. Vic Sharek followed with a single and after an error on the play, Sheeler scored  to make it 2-0. Volant tied the score, 2-2, in the top of the third inning. Ike Dubrasky walked and Craig Marett reached base on an error. Tom Burford followed with a double scoring both runners. Ellwood City regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tim and Ted Zikeli singled to lead off the inning. Nardone singled in Tim Zikeli and Ted Zikeli scored on an error to give Ellwood City a 4-2 lead. Volant narrowed the lead  to 4-3 in the fifth inning. Bob Peterson walked, took second base on a wild pitch, moved to third base on an error and scored on Glen McKissick's sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ted Zikeli singled and moved to third base on a single ny Jeff Potter. Potter stole second base. Nardone followed with a single scoring Zikeli and Potter to increase the lead to 6-3. Peterson homered for Volant in the top of the seventh inning to   narrow the lead to 6-4. Nardone led Ellwood City with a double, two singles and three RBI. Ted Zikeli added two singles. Burford doubled and singled and Peterson homered for Volant. VOLANT HOLDS OFF ELLWOOD CITY, 9-8, TO TIE NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES


Volant scored seven runs in the fourth inning then held on to defeat Ellwood City, 9-8, in the North County League Championship Series at Volant. The win knotted the best-of-five series at one game apiece. Bob Beltz led off the second inning with a home run to give Volant a 1-0 lead. Volant upped the lead to 2-0 on two singles and two walks. Ellwood City tied the score in the top of the fourth inning on a triple by Pete Sheeler followed by a Vic Sharek home rudded another run in the inning on  a walk, a hit-batsman and an error to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Volant erupted for seven runs. Joe Hudak singled, Jerry Dubrasky walked and Bob Peterson followed with a three-run home run to give Volant a 5-3 lead. Glenn McKissick doubled and Beltz followed with a double to up the lead to 6-3. Keith Goodge followed with a two-run homer to make it 8-3. A walk, a singleand an error to raise the lead to 9-3. Elwood City scored a run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 9-4. Ellwood City scored two more runs in the sixth inning on Jeff Potter's two-run homer to slice the lead to 9-6. In the top of the  seventh inning, Tim Zikeli walked and Ted Zikeli singled for Ellwood City, With two outs, Chuck Nardone doubled scoring both runners to narrow the lead to 9-8. Bot Volant got the final out. Beltz led Volant with a home run and double. Hudak hit a triple and two singles and Goodge homered and singled. Peterson had a three-run home run. Jerry Dubrasky added two singles and McKissick doubled. Sharek and Potter led Ellwood City with two-run homers. Sheeler tripled and Nardone doubled. Craig Marett picked up the win for Volant  on an eight-hitter.


BARTOLOMEO, SHEELER LEAD ELLWOOD CITY OVER VOLANT, 4-0, IN THE NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES


Rich Bartolomeo fired a two-hitter and Pete Sheeler blasted two triples to lead Ellwood City to a 4-0 win over Volant in the North County League Championship Series at  Sanders Field. The victory gave Ellwood City a two games to one lead in the best-of-five series. After two scoreless innings, Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Sheeler tripled and scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ellwood City added three more runs. Larry Fazioli singled and Chuck Nardone drew a base on balls. Sheeler blasted a triple past the 350-foot pole scoring both runners to give Ellwood City a 3-0 lead.Sheeler scored on a ground out to up the lead to 4-0. Shortstop Ted Zikeli made a fine defensive play in the seventh inning to preserve the shutout for Bartolomeo. Bartolomeo  picked up the win surrendering  two singles. Losing pitcher Tom Burford allowed five hits in a route-going effort. Sheeler led Ellwood City with two triples, two RBI and two runs scored.


GLEN MCKISSICK BELTS TWO THREE-RUN HOME RUNS  TO LEAD VOLANT TO 10-6 WIN OVER ELLWOOD CITY IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE SERIES


Glen McKissick smacked two three-run home runs to lead to Volant to a 10-5 win over Ellwood City in the North County League Championship Series at Volant. The victory tied the the best-of-five title series at two games apiece. Volant jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning  on two walks and McKissick's first  three-run homer. Ellwood City tied the score in the in the third inning. Jeff Potter doubled and scored on an error to cut the lead to 3-1. Bucko Turner singled and Pete Sheeler hit a two-run homer to knot the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the inning, Volant regained the lead. Bob Beltz reached on an error, George Glasser walked and both scored on a double by Joe Hudak to make it 5-3. Ellwood City's Ted Zikeli homered to  narrow the lead to 5-4 in the fourth inning. Tom Burford homered in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase  the Volant lead to 6-4. Sheeler ripped his second homer of the game in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Volant pulled away with a four-run rally. Burford singled, Peterson walked and McKissick followed with second three-run homer to raise the lead to 9-5. Volant added an additional run to up the margin to 10-5. Mc-Kissicl led the Volant attack with two home runs and six RBI. Burford homered and singled and Hudak added a double. Sheeler led Ellwood City with two homers and three RBI. Bucko Turner doubled and singled. Wnning pitcher Joe Hudak scattered seven hits in a route-going performance.


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS VOLANT, 9-6, TO WIN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP-HERMAN TRIPLE KEYS FOUR-RUN LAST INNING


Ellwood City rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally past Volant, 9-6, to win the North County  League Championship Series at Flaherty Field.  Rich Herman's bases-loaded triple was the key hit in the the four-run rally. The victory gave Ellwood City the title in the best-of-five series, three games to two. By coin flip, Volant was the home team at the neutral field. Ellwood City scord two runs in the first innings. Chuck Nardone led off with a single and Pete Sheeler drea a base on balls. Vic Sharek singled home Nardone and Sheeler scored on an error to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Volant cut the lead to 2-1 on Bob Peterson's home run in the bottom of the second inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Sheeler walked and scored Jeff Potter's double to raise Ellwood City's lead to 3-1. Tim Zikeli doubled in Potter to up the lead to 4-1. Ted Zikeli follwed with an RBI-double to increase the lead to 5-1. In he bottom of the fifth inning, Volant got a   single, two walks and a hit-batsman to cut the lead to 5-2. In

 the bottom of the sixth inning, Volant scored four runs to take the lead. Bob Beltz and Keith Goodge walked and George Glasser singled to load the bases. After a force out at home, Ike Dubrasky walked to force in a run to cut the lead to 5-3. After a second out, Tom Burford ripped a bases-clearing triple scoring all three runners to give Volant a 6-5 lead. Ellwood City responded with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sharek led off with single. Sharek went to third base on an error and scored on a ground out to tie the score at 6-6. Tim Zikeli walked and Ted Zikeli followed with a single. Frank Pisano walked to load the bases. Herman followed with a bases-clearing triple scoring all three runners to give Ellwood City a 9-6 lead. Volant  got the opening runner on base, but the next three batters were retired. Herman led Ellwood City with a triple, double and three RBI. Sharek added three singles and Ted Zikeli doubled and singled. Peterson led Volant with a homer run and two RBI. Burford tripled with three RBI. ELLWOOD CITY WINS NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP-FIFTH TITLE IN SIX YEARS


Ellwood City won the North County League title for the fifth time in six seasons. Ellwood City, managed by Carmen Beatrice, defeated Volant, three games to one, in the best-of-five title series. Under the sponsorship of Beatrice Sporting 

Goods, Ellwood City logged a 34-9 record. 


ELLWOOD CITY EDGES SCHULLER'S , 7-6, IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE SEMI-FINALS ON TIM ZIKELI SINGLE


Ellwood City edged Schuller's , 7-6, to win the opening game of the North County League semi-final series at Sanders Field. Tim Zikeli singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Vic Sharek doubled and Chuck Nardone singled. Ted Zikeli walked to load the bases and Tim Zikeli walked to score Sharek to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Rich Herman followed with a single scoring Nardone and Ted Zikeli to up the lead to 3-0. Chris Russell walked to reload the bases. Tim Zikeli scored on a wild pitch and Jeff Foley's sacrifice fly scored Herman to up the lead to 5-0. Schuller's scored a run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-1. Bucko Turner's RBI-single in the fourth inning brought the Ellwood City lead to 6-1 . Jerry Bishop's home run in the fifth inning for Schuller's narrowed the lead to  6-2. Schuller's rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at 6-6. After Schuller's failed to score in the top of the seventh inning, Ellwood City scored the game-winning run in bottom of the inning. Pete Sheeler and pinch-hitter Jeff Belonzi walked. Nick Nardone sacrificed both runners up and Ted Zikeli was walked intentionally. Tim Zikeli followed with a single to score Sheeler with the winning run. Nick Nardone led Ellwood City with two singles. Sharek added a double and Tim Zikeli and Rich Herman singled and drove in two runs. Mark Smiley led Schuller's with a double and single. Dave Conway, Larry Cole and Jerry Winters added two singles.  Bishop added a home run. Don Mancini picked up the win with 1-1/3 scoreless innings of relief. 


NARDONE'S ARM, BAT LEAD ELLWOOD CITY TO 7-2 WIN OVER SCHULLER'S  TO ADVANCE TO NORTH COUNTY FINALS


Behind the arm and bat of Chuck Nardone, Ellwood City downed Schuller's , 7-2, in the North County League semi-final series at Pulaski. Nardone tossed a six-hitter and smacked a three-run homer to lead Ellwood City. With the victory, Ellwood City swept the best-of-three series and advanced to the championship series. Schuller's took a 2-0 lead in the  bottom of the first inning on Larry Cole's two-run homer. In the third inning, Ellwood City responded with a five-run rally. Tim Zikeli led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Jeff Foley reached on an error scoring Zikeli to cut the deficit to 2-1. Pete Sheeler walked and Vic Sharek singled scoring Foley to tie the score at 2-2. Nardone followed with a three-run homer to give Ellwood City a 5-2 lead. Ellwood City added two insurance runs in the sixth inning  to take a 7-2 lead. Winning pitcher Nardone allowed six hits in his complete-game victory. Sharek led Ellwood City at the plate with three singles and an RBI. Nardone homered, singled and drove in three runs. Tim Zikeli singled twice and drove in a run. Jerry Winters singled twice and Cole homered to lead Schuller's.            

   

VOLANT ROCKS ELLWOOD CITY, 19-3, IN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE OPENER BEHIND HUDAK


Behind the bat and arm of Joe Hudak, Volant rocked Ellwood City, 19-3, in the North County League Championship Series opening game at Volant. Hudak rapped four hits, including two home runs, and threw a four-hitter for Volant.  Volant scored six runs in thr first inning to take a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Hudak and Bob Peterson hit back-to-back home runs to make it 8-0. Volant added six more runs in the third inning, which included another Hudak homer, to increase the lead to 14-0.  Ellwood City scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 14-2. Volant scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to up the lead to 16-2. Keith Goodge smacked a three-run homer for Volant to raise  the lead to 19-2. Tim Zikeli's solo homer in the seventh inning for Ellwood City closed the scoring at 19-3. Hudak led Volant at the plate with two home runs, two singles and three RBI. Oeterson homered and singled twice. Tom Burford doubled and singled and drove in three runs. George Glasser singled twice with three RBI. Goodge homered with three RBI. Ike Dubrasky singled twice and Jerry Dubrasky doubled for Volant. Bucko Turner doubled twice and Tim Zikeli homered of r Ellwood City. Winning pitcher Hudak allowed four hits  for Volant.

Joe Williams threw a three-hitter and Rich Herman rapped two doubles and a single as Ellwood City defeated Volant, 4-1, in the North County League Championship Series at Sanders Field. The victory knotted the best-of-five series at a game apiece. Volant yook a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by Joe Hudak, a walk to Bob Peterson and an RBI-single by Tom Burford. In the bottom of the third inning, Ellwood City took the lead, 2-1, on an RBI-single by Vic Sharek and a sacrifice fly by Chuck Nardone. Ellwood City added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tim Zikeli singled and scored on a double by Herman to up the lead to 3-1. Herman moved to third base on a ground out and scored on a ground out to increase the lead to 4-1. Winning pitcher Williams allowed three singles in a route-going effort. Herman led Ellwood City with two doubles and a single. Jeff Foley added a double.

The win gave Ellwood City a two games to one lead in the best-of-five series. Pisano led off the game with a home run to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. Ellwood City erupted for five more runs in the second inning. Chuck Nardone singled and moved to third base on a single by Ted Zikeli. Jeff Foley singled in Nardone to make it 2-0. Tim Zikeli walked to load the bases. Pisano followed with a grand-slam to raise the lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the third inning, Volant cut the lead to 6-2. With two runners aboard, Peterson hit a three-run  homer left field to narrow the lead to 10-9.  Volant failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Pisano led Ellwood City with two home runs and five RBI. Ted Zikeli and Nardone homered and singled . Tim Zikeli added a double.Dubrasky led Volant with a home run and single. Hudak and Gulas doubled. Winning pitcher Keith Foley closed out the victory with four innings of relief. 


ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS VOLANT, 4-1, TO WIN NORTH COUNTY LEAGUE TITLE-GAME SUSPENDED BY BRAWL-FOUR POLICE UNITS QUELL FRACUS 


In a game marred by a bench-clearing brawl, Ellwood City defeated Volant, 4-1, to win the North County League Championship Series at Sanders Field. The win gave Ellwood City the best-of-five series, three games to one. The crown marked Ellwood City's fifth North County League title in six years. The game was suspended after a brawl erupted between players and fans of both teams in the top of the seventh inning.Police units from Ellwood City, Wayne Township, Wampum and Franklin Township were called to quell the fracus.  The game was suspended until the next night when Ellwood City, with a large police presence surrounding the field, completed the win. Ellwood City opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Singles by Frank Pisano and Pete Sheeler and an error scored a run to stake Ellwood City to a 1-0 lead. Chuck Nardone's RBI-single upped the lead to 2-0. In the third inning, Vic Sharek walked, stole second base and scored on Nardone's single to increase the Ellwood City lead to 3-0. On the throw to the plate, Nardone took second base and scored on Ted Zikeli's RBI-single to up the lead to 4-0. Volant scored in the top of the fifth inning to narrow the lead to 4-1. Steve Calabrese was hit by a pitch and Fred Peluso singled. Joe Hudak sliced a double down the right field line scoring Calabrese. With one out,  Bob Peterson walked to load the bases. But a pop-up and strikeout ended the inning. After a scoreless sixth inning, Volant mounted one final threat in the top of the seventh inning. Hudak walked and Jerry Dubrasky singled to runners at first and second base. An ensuing argument that began with the umpire turned into a brawl between both teams and their fans. After order was restored by police, the league commissioner suspended the game till the next night. When play resumed, Ellwood City retired the final three batters to complete the 4-1 win. Winning pitcher Don Mancini allowed four hits over six innings. Mancini was relieved by Pisano with two batters on base when the fracus began. When play resumed the next day, Keith Foley relieved Pisano with a 2-0 count on the batter and recorded the first out of the inning. Joe Williams, the fourth pitcher in the seventh inning for Ellwood City, retired the final two batters. Losing pitcher John Munnell was relieved by Hudak, who threw 3-2/3 innings of hitless relief. Nardone led Ellwood City with two singles and two RBI. Hudak led Volant with a double.

ATLANTA BRAVES SIGN ROTH AFTER TWO-HIT, 16 STRIKEOUT IN ELLWOOD CITY 7-1 WIN


The Atlanta Braves signed Mike Roth after pitching Ellwood City to a 7-1 win over Horton's in the North County League at Castlewood. Roth fired a two-hitter and fanned 16 batters on the way to the victory. Atlanta Braves veteran scout Joe Caputo signed Roth and he was assigned to the Braves' Gulf Coast Class A team in Bradenton, Florida. Roth compiled a 5-0 record for Gulf Coast.
