ELLWOOD CITY DOWNS CORAOPOLIS, 6-2, IN LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES DISTRICT TOURNAMENT BEHIND COLMERY- OVER 2,500 FANS AT LINCOLN FIELD ATTEND GAME
Ellwood City won the opening game of the Little League World Series District 3 Tournament over Coraopolis, 6-2, before over 2,500 fans at Lincoln Field. With the victory, Ellwood City take a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Sam Colmery fired a two-hitter to lead Ellwood City. Corapolis scored a run in the top of the first inning to give Coraoplis a 1-0 lead. Alan Brasko smacked a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give Coraopolis a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City scored a run in the bottom of the inning on singles by Don Shoemaker and Rich Pertile to lead off the inning. Two errors allowed Shoemaker to score to narrow the deficit to 2-1. Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. Stan Platek walked to lead off the inning. With one out, Ralph Morelli singled Platek to second base. With two outs, Pertile singled to load the bases. Alfonso Parente followed with a single down the right field line scoring Platek and Morelli to give Ellwood City a 3-2 lead. When the ball eluded the catcher, Peryile scored to up the Ellwood City lead to 4-2. Ellwood City added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Platek singled and Bill Frazier reached on an error. Morelli followed with a long single scoring Platek and Frazier to up the Ellwood City lead to 6-2. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Winning pitcher Colmery threw a complete-game two-hitter and fanned six batters for Ellwood City. Morelli lead Ellwood City with a two singles and two RBI. Pertile singled twice and Frazier added a double. Parente singled and drove in two runs. Brasco led Coraopolis with a home run.
ELLWOOD CITY DEFEATS CORAOPLIS, 8-2, TO WIN LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES DISTRICT TITLE-MORELLI, PERTILE HOMER AND CIOFFI THROWS SIX-HITTER
Ellwood City defeated Coraopolis, 8-2, to win the Little League World Series District Title at Coraoplis. The win gave Ellwood City the best-of-three series, two games to none. Ralph Morelli and Rich Pertile homered and Joe Cioffi tossed a six-hitter to lead Ellwood City.
Ellwood City scored twice in the top of the first inning to take the lead. With two outs, Bill Frazier reached on an error and went to third base on a single by Morelli. A wild pitch scored Frazier to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. On the attempt to get the runner at third base an errant throw allowed Morelli to score to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied for five runs in the second inning-again with two outs. Four errors, a walk, a hits batsman and a home run by Pertile upped the Ellwood City lead to 5-0. Coraopolis countered with one run in the bottom of the second inning to reduce the deficit to 5-1. After a scoreless third inning, Morelli belted a long home run to right-center over the bleachers and out of the park to give Ellwood City a 6-1 lead. Coraopolis closed the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning to final 6-2 margin. Morelli and Pertile led Ellwood City with a home run and single. Ray Foley and Wendy Shoemaker added singles. Jim Pantzis and Frank Scalercio doubled and singled for Corapolis. Winning pitcher Cioffi scattered six hits and struck out seven batters.
ELLWOOD CITY AND TARENTUM-BRACKINRIDGE TIE 5-5 IN LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES REGIONAL PLAYOFF-GASKELL'S PINCH-HIT TWO RUN HOMER TIES IT IN SIXTH INNING
Ellwood City tied Tarentum-Brackinridge, 5-5, in the Little League World Series Regional Playoffs before approximately 2,500 fans at Lincoln field. Dick Gaskell's pinch-hit two-run homer tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to send the game to extra innings.
Tarentum-Brackenridge scored a solo run in the first inning and added four more runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Don Shoemaker singled and Sam Colmery walked to put runners on first and second base. After a passed ball, Rocco Manzo singled in Shoemaker to cut the deficit to 5-1. Two passed balls allowed Colmery and Manzo to score to narrow the score to 5-3. In the bottom of the sixth inning after two strikeouts, Ellwood City was down to their last out. Manzo reached base on an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate. Gaskell was sent in to pinch-hit and smacked a home run over the left field fence to knot the score at 5-5 and force extra innings. After a scoreless seventh inning, Tarentum-Brackenridge scored on a home run by Bob Swaney to take a 6-5 lead. However, the the game was called in the top of the eighth inning due to darkness and the score reverted back to 5-5 to force a replay off the game. Gaskell homered with two RBI and Rocco Manzo singled twice for Ellwood City. Bill Frazier, Rich Pertile, Alfonso Parente and Shoemaker added singles. Paul Norris led Tarentum-Brackenridge with a home run and two singles. Swaney smacked two doubles and Don Lichok added a homer.
TARENTUM-BRACKENRIDGE SHUTS OUT ELLWOOD CITY, 7-0, BEHIND LICHOK TO WIN LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES REGIONAL
Tarentum-Brackenridge shut out Ellwood City, 7-0, to win the Little League World Series Regional at Lincoln Field before over 2,000 fans. Don Lichok fired a two-hitter to lead Tarentum-Brackenridge to the victory. The win advanced Tarentum-Brackenridge to the Western Pennsylvania championship against McKeesport.
After a scoreless first inning, Tarentum-Brackenridge scored twice in the top of the second inning. Two walks a wild pitch and a two-run single by Jim Shaffer gave Tarentum-Brackenride a 2-0 lead. After two scoreless innings, Tarentum-Brackenridge scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Four singles, a walk and two errors upped the lead to 6-0. Tarentum-Brackenridge scored the final run of the game on a home run by Bob Swaney. Winning pitcher Lichok fanned seven battres on the way to the two-hit for Tarentum-Brackenridge. Swaney led at the plate with a home run and two singles. Bill Frazier and Don Shoemaker singled for Ellwood City.

ELLWOOD CITY SLIPS BY HICKORY, 3-2, IN THE OPENING GAME OF THE LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES DISTRICT TOURNAMENT BEHIND MALLARY, PLATEK
Ellwood City slipped by Hickory, 3-2, in the opening game of the Little League World Series District Tournament at Hickory. Bob Mallary homered and doubled and Stan Platek tossed a six-hitter to lead Ellwood City. The victory gave Ellwood City a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Ellwood City jumped out to a lead with two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Alfonso Parente singled and went to third base on a single by Paul Reilly. Mallary followed with a double scoring both runners to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. Hickory scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning to slice the lead to 2-1. Ellwood City got the run back in the top of the fourth inning. Mallary led off the inning with a line-drive over the center field fence to up the Ellwood City lead to 3-1. Hickory loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored one run to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Platek pitched out of the jam to give Ellwood City the victory. Mallary led Ellwood City with a home run, double and three RBI. Elliot Hall added two singles for Ellwood City. McGowan and Scott led Hickory with two singles apiece. Winning pitcher Platek scattered six hits in a compete-game effort.
HICKORY NO-HITS ELLWOOD CITY, 5-0, BEHIND DUBRASKY, DOUDS TO KNOT LITLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES DISTRICT SERIES
Hickory defeated Ellwood City, 5-0, in the Little League World Series at Lincoln Field. Jim Dubrasky and Bob Douds combined on a no-hitter to lead Hickory. The victory knotted the best-of-three series at one-game apiece. Hickory opened the scoring with a two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Hickory added solo runs in the second, third and fourth innings to increase their lead to 6-0. Neither team scored in the final two frames. Winning pitcher Jim Dubrasky fanned eight batters in three innings of work. Douds struck out six batters in the final three frames for Hickory.
HICKORY DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY, 13-3, TO WIN LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES DISTRICT TITLE
Hickory defeated Ellwood City, 13-3, to win the the Little League World Series District title at Lincoln Field. The victory gave Hickory the best-of-three series, two games to one. Hickory opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ellwood City tied the game up with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alfonso Parente reached on a base on balls and scored on a two-run homer by Paul Reilly over the left-field fence to tie the score at 2-2. After a scoreless second inning, Hickory scored four runs in the the top of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. Hickory pulled away with five more runs in the top of the fourth inning to increase their lead to 11-2. Ellwood City scored a solo run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Bob Spence to cut the deficit to 11-3. Hickory closed the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to account for the 13-3 final margin. Paul Keats singled twice to lead Hickory. Reilly led Ellwood City with a home run and two RBI. Spence added a double and RBI and Ron Mazzano and Elliot Hall added singles. Stacey was the winning pitcher for Hickory with Serenac in relief.

Beaver edged Ellwood City, 2-1, in the opening game of the Knee-Hi District Tournament at Beaver. Norm Lengyel was the winning pitcher for Beaver. Don Costa threw a complete-game for Ellwood City.
ELLWOOD CITY SCORES FIVE IN SEVENTH INNING TO TIE BEAVER IN KNEE-HI DISTRICT TOURNAMENT SERIES
Ellwood City scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie Beaver, 8-8, in the second game of the Knee-Hi District tournament series at Ewing Park. Beaver held a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Ellwood City opened the scoring to open a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, Beaver scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Both teams scored a single run in the fourth inning as Beaver retained the lead at 6-2. Beaver scored two runs in the fifth inning to open up an 8-2 margin. Ellwood City scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to narrow the deficit to 8-3. Ellwood City rallied for five runs in their last at-bat to knot the score at 8-8. After a scoreless eighth inning the game was called due to darkness. Mike Newman, Reno Angelone and Ray McCaslin each singled twice to lead Ellwood City. Mott, Staub and Kirchner singled twice apiece to lead Beaver.
BEAVER DOWNS ELLWOOD CITY, 9-3, IN EXTRA INNINGS TO WIN KNEE-HI DISTRICT TOURNAMENT SERIES
Beaver scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to down Ellwood City, 9-3, in the Knee-Hi District Tournament Series at Ewing Park. The victory gave Beaver the best-of-three series, two games to none. Beaver scored two runs n the first inning on a two-run single to take a 2-0 lead. After three scoreless innings, Ellwood City scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Don Costa singled, moved to second base on an error and scored on a single by Brian MacMurdo to decrease the lead deficit to 2-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ellwood City knotted the score. Bob Mathas doubled and moved to third on a single by Richards. Reno Angelone followed with an RBI-single to score Mathas to tie the score at 2-2 and force extra innings. Beaver scored seven run in the top of the eighth inning to open up a 9-2 lead. Buzz Beachem homered in the bottom of the eighth inning for Ellwood City to account for the 9-3 final margin.
Lengyel was the winning pitcher in relief for Beaver. Starting pitcher Don Barley threw seven innings and allowed two runs for Beaver. Barley and Laughlin led Beaver at the plate with two singles. Angelone singled twice to lead Ellwood City. Beachem homered and Mathas added a double.

Ellwood City downed New Castle, 7-4, to win the 1st Ellwood City Little League Tournament at Ewing Park. Ron Mazzano smacked a three-run homer to lead Ellwood City to the title. New Castle won the coin flip and Ellwood City failed to score in the top of the first inning. New Castle scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Donston, Olescyski, West and Baker singled to open up a 3-0 lead for New Castle. Ellwood City roared back in the top of the second inning with seven runs to take the lead. Jim Hughes and Ron Hughes reached base for Ellwood City. Mazzano followed with a three-run homer to knot the score at 3-3. Dick Rosen, Jim Barry, Ralph Ferrante, Judd Liebendorfer and Vic Guthrie followed with singles to give Ellwood City a 6-3 lead. Jim Hughes hit a sacrifice fly to score Liebendorfer to up the lead to 7-3. New Castle decreased the deficit with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Conti hit a double and scored on a single by Chiavrini to make the score 7-4. Neither team scored in the sixth inning and the title went to Ellwood City. Mazzano led Ellwood City with a homer and three RBI. Donston led New Castle with two singles and Conti added a double. Winning pitcher Ron Hughes scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort.

With the victory, Beaver took a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Don Barley picked up the win on the mound and added two hits, including the game-winner, for Beaver. After a scoreless first inning, Ellwood City scored a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Ray McCaslin doubled dowen the right field line and scored on an error to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. After two scoreless innings, Beaver took the lead in the top of the fifth inning with two runs. Dappenbrook singled and Barley reached on an error to place runners at second and third base. Shalka followed with a single scoring both runners to give Beaver a 2-1 lead. Ellwood City tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Roccp Manzo singled and stole second base. Ray Foley followed with a single scoring Manzo to knot the score at 2-2. Beaver scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Vanderlice singled and went to second base on a sacrifice by Taormina. Barley followed with a single scoring Vanderlice to give Beaver a 3-2 lead. Ellwood City failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning and the victory went to Beaver. Winning pitcher Barley threw a five-hitter to lead Beaver on the mound. Don Costa of Ellwood City scattered seven-hits for Ellwood City. Barley and Vanderlice singled twice to lead Beaver. McCaslin led Ellwood City with two singles.

Ellwood City opened the scoring with a solo run in the top of the first inning. Ray Foley singled, stole second and third base and scored on an error to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Beaver roared back with three runs. Kirchner doubled in a run and Stout singled in two runs to give Beaver a 3-1 lead. Beaver added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning. A walk, an error, two bunt singles and a two-run double by Kirchner increased the Beaver lead to 7-1. Ellwood City scored a solo run in the top of the fourth inning on a triple by Don Costa and a sacrifice by Pitts to cut the margin to 7-2. Elwood City added three runs on two errors, an infield single by Gardner, a walk and a hit batsman to decrease the lead to 7-5. Ellwood City threatened to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning. An error and an RBI-double by Costa sliced the deficit to 7-6. But the rally ended and Beaver claimed the victory. Kirchner led Beaver with two doubles and three RBI. Costa led Ellwood City with a triple, double and two RBI. Winning pitcher Barley went the distance. Sam Colmery threw 4-2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Ellwood City.

Beaver Falls shut down Ellwood City, 4-0, in the opening game of the Knee-Hi District Tournament Series at Beaver Falls High School Field. John Buzzi fired a two-hit shut out and Bob Lawrence homered and doubled to lead Beaver Falls. The win gave Beaver Falls a one-game lead in the best-of-three series. Beaver Falls opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Bill Kofalt led off with a double and scored on an error to give Beaver Falls a 1-0 lead. Beaver Falls added another solo run in the bottom of the third inning. Lawrence led off with a double and scored on a single by Reno Masotti to up the lead to 2-0. After two scoreless innings, Beaver Falls added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Buzzi singled and Lawrence belted a 400-foot home run to account for the final 4-0 margin. Winning pitcher Buzzi threw a two-hitter and fanned seven batters in a complete-game effort. Lawrence led Beaver Falls at the plate with a homer, double and two RBI. Masotti rapped three singles with an RBI. Kofalt added a double. Bill Frazier and Bob Mallary singled for Ellwood City.
